The FA, "sign the beast" thread

If the Patriots could end up with 3 or 4 players from this list, I would be more than pleased. If not, onto the draft it is.

01. Alex Mack
02. Red Bryant or Linval Joseph
03. Michael Johnson or Jared Allen or Justin Tuck
04. T.J. Ward or Thomas DeCoud
05. Emmanuel Sanders or Sidney Rice
06. D'Qwell Jackson
07. Scott Chandler
08. Alex Carrington

This completely disregards the salary cap. As mentioned, I'd be happy with a few additions to an already good team.

I like that list, a lot.
I would also add WR Golden Tate to it. Out of all of the UFA WRs, I strongly feel that Tate is
best-suited to make the most immediate contribution. Our problem of height at outside WR
would not be solved, however, so unless I could easily rid myself of Onthemendola's contract,
I would not be able to afford him.

I know I am going to get smashed, but why all the attention on McCourty as the next Ed Reed? He is good, not great. His passes defended were down about 30%. I think you need a stud SS that McCourty can compliment. I would not call McCourty a play maker. That is a stretch. He is a tick up from Eugene Wilson and that is maybe. Wilson was good. Not great. Compare their stats. The first three years of Wilson before injury they are identical.

McCourty is very good as far as versatility to jump to CB on some sets, but we still need that upgrade for run stopper and coverage combination. Delmas is the best fit although not the best that is available, as Byrd, Witner and Ward will be out of our ball park.

Delmas had the lowest completion against of any Saftey. He has a good year and he is still young. His $6.5mm was a CAPeroo.

T.J Ward had almost twice the tackles McCourty had. And the Cleveland D was 7th versus pass yds. and 8th versus rushing yards. As a Team , a mess yes, but pretty good D statistically.

Just Ward and Jackson alone from that Cleveland D would be a significant upgrade to our D. Ward is probably too high.

There's a significant difference between the ground covered when playing Safety opposed to Cornerback. Ward also comes up into the box far more than McCourty. You're picking points to support your point of view DW Toys.

McCourty is a damn fine player. The D would be lost without him.

Fine player, I agree. Not elite. Do you have any other support? I would listen. He's O.K. He has three missed games the last few years. So that is not terrible. He is a god compliment to a stud safety if we can sign one.

Well that's because your village's school marm back in the 1800s probably graded you by giving out a certain of number of lashes with a switch.

Jabari Greer, please and thanks.

Coming off the injury, could put him on PUP, activate him after Talib gets his annual injury, and away we go.

His knee looked like it exploded. Then imploded. Then turned into a black hole. I'm not giving him a lot of money.

I'm not sure there's a particular need to go back and examine statistics given your flippant disregard for positional requirements and differences.

McCourty is a far better player than you give him credit for. He'll be even better when he's not forced to cover up mistakes and is allowed to simply play. The same goes for people lambasting Mankins not realizing the work he's doing to cover Wendell.

A fair retort Cousin.

Some needs we can fill in FA and the guys I want-

-Versatile guy who can play as an interior pass rusher at DT or DE in the 4-3. Lamaar Houston is probably my favorite FA out there this year, but if not him Red Bryant will be a much cheaper option for the role.

WR- Well resigning Edelman is obviously number one. But if he leaves, Golden Tate would be my favorite guy out there, however he'll demand too much and likely get overpaid. I would honestly not mind giving Hakeem Nicks a shot on a one year prove it deal.

Situational pass rusher- Adding Jared Allen would remind me what we were considering doing last year when we gave Freeney and Abraham workouts. Would be a nice lockeroom presence, but Everson Griffen would be the best fit for this role out of who all's available in the FA pool.

Safety- My mouth is foaming at the idea of Jarius Byrd, he'd likely give us aside from Seattle the best safety tandem in the league. But I think signing a guy with a little more of a thumping ability such as Ward or Whitner would be a better fit opposite McCourty.

Corner- Resign Talib please.

I agree, but I wouldn't expect he'd cost much considering his age and injury. He'd probably have to settle for a one-year "prove it" deal, so I hope it's with us.

Cleveland place the transition tag Alex Mack. They will likely match any reasonable offer considering their cap space. He is probably no longer an option which blows…

Give me Martin over Incognito

And Whitner is the guy I want, did he have a bad season or what? I've heard nothing about him

Arthur Jones or Jared Allen would be awesome

Nicks,Rice,or Sanders would be great

I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on Finley at TE or Danario Alexander at WR

I would love to see us send a third to Tampa for Revis and get Amaro and Niklas in the draft

No thanks on Allen, but I agree re: Jones.

Also, Jackson just signed with the Colts, 4 years $22 million. Assuming that it's relatively standard structure where he's cuttable in year four if his performance declines too much, that's about right for a player of his talent, IMO. Wouldn't have been upset if the Pats had signed him to the same contract.

Allen strikes me as another one of those vet signings we get just a year or two too late (see: A. Wilson).

I thought we all agreed we didn't want another safety who can't cover?

He wouldn't come here anyways, he's publicly stated he'd rather retire than be a role player, we have 2 DE's who played over 95% of the snaps last season, his purpose would be to spell them and keep them fresh, not replace them.

Erm... Allen would start. He had 11 1/2 sacks last season in spite of constant double teams that he wouldn't face as much here. Ninkovich and draft pick/whoever else they pick up would spell him and Jones.
