Rumor or Speculation (IDK): Patriots shopping Amendola

I do not understand why you and a few others have such an issue with someone opening a thread. Nobody putting a gun to your head forcing you to enter the thread and read it, and it is the offseason so there is not exactly a ton going on in here were this thread is driving down more important threads.

You can ignore the thread with the ignore function, or since you do not like the discussion you could simply choose not to go into the thread. Instead, you make a call to the moderators as if you have been forced to painfully endure yet another Amendola thread. I thought Jack Bauer was a tough guy he would never read a thread he did not want read…

I do not understand why you and a few others feel the need to start what seems like a new Amendola thread every single hour, where we get the immense honor of being able to read the same tired analysis/criticisms/unsubstantiated rumors over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

Why wouldn't they make him available? If they can get sufficient return for him, that might tip the balance enough to make it worth eating his dead money this year and re-signing Edelman. It's definitely a theoretical possibility, although I'd be extremely surprised if any team was willing to give up enough to make that a worthwhile proposition for the Pats.

In other words, Pompei reads Patsfans.

It depends on what the team would get back in return. A 2nd? A 3rd? Not sure. But if the team gets back a high enough draft pick, I would drive Amendola to the airport myself (assuming the team would then sign Edelman long term). But this seems more like speculation than anything. I would be shocked if they called it quits on Amendola this early.

When is the last time I opened a thread about Amendola, or when have I ever opened one about him being traded or released?

For what it is worth the article has merit and it is very possible because it is a deep draft, Belichick loves having extra picks to work with so I am sure Amendola and several other players are up for discussion.

I would say any number of these players would be tradable for the right price –

- Stevan Ridley
- Kyle Arrington
- Jake Bequette
- Joe Vellano
- Isaac Sopoaga
- Marcus Cannon
- Dan Connolly
- Kenbrell Thompkins
- Tavon Wilson
- Tommy Kelly
- Adrian Wilson

Two thoughts came to mind when I read this post.

1. We could use a safety now that we released our starting safety earlier today.
2. Why is everyone so shocked that on the day we released our starting safety that we would also entertain trading our #3 wide receiver?

If I'm not mistaken (and I might be), trading Amendola has the same effect on the cap that cutting him does. It saves the Patriots zero money, so it doesn't exactly facilitate the re-signing of Edelman at all. So the draft compensation would have to be high enough to make it worth it.

And that's where the Amendola critics seem to have a paradox: If Amendola is so bad and needs to get out of here ASAP, why would another team give up enough value to make it worth the cap hit of replacing him?

Cutting Gregory actually freed up money. That's the difference.

I heard the Texans are working on a deal to give us #33 for Bequette, Vellano, and Thompkins.

And Mallett....

I believe the Pats are always willing to look at personnel transactions that might better the team. That being said, if I understand the salary implications correctly eating $4.8 million to unload Amendola and his $4.5 million salary cap hit would appear to create a larger issue, leaving aside the fact he may well be worth that money for the Pats this year.

With that being said, that article is about as soft as statement as you can read on trade proceedings. I don't buy it, and I would find it hard to believe his value in trade would prompt a trade in any way, shape or form.

Since Amendola signed in March these are the threads that I opened that pertained to him, two of them were polls.

- Poll: Would you trade Mallett and Amendola to the Texans for the #33 pick in the draft?
- Edelman may be worth $6-$8 million, but is he worth that to a team that has Amendola?
- Two slot WR offense – benefits of keeping Edelman and Amendola together
- Amendola did not choke and if Brady6 isn’t bashing him you shouldn’t either…
- Poll: Hypothetical – If you could only keep one who would it be Amendola or Edelman?
- Thru week 6 Amendola has only proven his critics correct…

Most were to discuss the direction of the actual slot position which given Edelman was the starter at the end of the year, is now a UFA, and if he walks then Amendola would reassume the starting role I feel is a very reasonable discussion topic. Should we just ignore that the most targeted position in our offense is at a crossroad with a big decision looming for the second straight season just so we can avoid being critical of Danny Amendola?

I heard we threw in Arrington and Watt is coming here too.

Where there is smoke there is fire

Yeah, this is heating up like the Pats making a play for Julius Peppers a few years ago and the Pats making a trade offer for Darrelle Revis last year. Tons of smoke in both cases and the Pats got both players in both cases. So obviously this rumor is true.

Seriously, every year there are at least three or four major rumors involving the Patriots in the offseason and I would say maybe 3-5% or them have come true.

If you think this is a case of "when there is smoke, there is fire" it is because you want it to happen. Most rumors involving the Patriots including ones that are rumored to be done deals seem to never happen.

For Christ's sake, can you give the straw men a rest?

What we should do is consolidate all of the Amendola discussion into a single thread, obviously.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Pats spoke to a few teams about potential trades and Amendola's name came up. I am sure the Pats float a lot of players' names out there to see what they might get for them and are willing to pull the trigger if they get the right offer. I am sure short of Brady (and this might not be the case for much longer) and maybe a small handful of young up and comers (like Chandler Jones) that anyone on the Patriots can be had by any other team for the right price.

You know what I hate most about threads like this (over and over again)?

They are the STUPID echo of New England sports radio, which is no better than right-wing hate radio.

It hurts the ability of local teams to attract and retain talent - and that's the truth. There are players who won't come anywhere near Boston because the place is one big gripe-fest.

Guys like Amendola certainly are aware of this constant harping. it does nothing to help attitude, performance or anything else.

It's ****-bag whining and nothing more.

I've got a dear friend who played for the Sox. Loves Boston - absolutely HATES most of NE sports radio and columnists and insists that other places (other than New York, Philly, and Chicago) simply aren't like this.

I was a book convention in Anaheim many years ago. The Red Sox wound up in the same hotel. Down at the bar, I saw Frank Viola and Danny Darwin sitting at a table with a couple of other guys - I was always a Viola fan so I went over to say hi and introduced myself as a writer from Boston.

They immediately started ragging on me, so I figured I was bugging thenm and excused myself, but asked one of the other guys (I thought I recognized him) if he played for the Sox. The guy exploded at me. "How can you not know?"

"I listen to the games more than I watch..."

"I'm the only one on the team!" (He was the only African American on the Sox at that time.) "How can you not know? You said you were a sportswriter?"

They were pissed.

"No, not a sportswriter...I'm a novelist, out here for the BEA convention..."

"Oooooohhhhhh," from all of them. Complete change of attitude. Invited me to sit down and have a drink...and introduced me to Herm Winningham.

Amendola played his guts out last year. He deserves more respect than this board gives him.

I am not sure; I do not think Amendola is that bad of a player. I think if we had to move him to keep Edelman long term I would do so because I feel it is best to keep a player who has proven he can do it than to keep a player that we are all hopeful could. It is a one-year cap hit of $4.8M if he is traded. If we retain him, we would still take a cap hit even if we cut him in 2015.

Dead money by year –

2014 - $4.8M
2015 - $3.6M
2016 - $2.4M
2017 - $1.2M

It is a question of whether you want to take a $4.8M cap hit in 2014 or a $3.6M cap hit in 2015. If they trade him yes we take the $4.8M hit against this cap but it free $5.75M off the 2015 cap, if we wait and then cut him 2015 it only takes $1.975M off the 2015 cap.

I do not really care but I mean you contribute to all of them, if you do not want something to grow do not feed it.

BTW, here's the exact quote from Pompei. Note that he does not say "the Patriots have been shopping" or anything along those lines.

• NFL teams say the name of Danny Amendola has been floated in trade talks. The Patriots signed the wide receiver to a five-year, $28.5 million contract last offseason, but Amendola struggled to stay healthy and did not have the kind of impact the team envisioned him having. Amendola caught 54 passes for 633 yards with Tom Brady throwing to him. He had two better seasons when he played in St. Louis with Sam Bradford throwing to him. There has been speculation the Patriots could cut Amendola if a deal cannot be worked out.

i hope they trade him for moss

What do you call someone who:
(a) assumes everyone else reads every other thread and post on this message board and gets mad when items get brought up more than 1 time
(b) complains about what they hate
(c) calls someone STUPID and uses no facts in their horrible attempt to prove his point
(d) feels compelled to bring up politics in a sports talk forum
(e) calls someone a ****bag on a fan forum
(f) brings up 1 persons friends experience in an attempt to try to prove a point about something in general
(g) that friend from (f) is an athlete or other famous person...like it makes a difference. im sure every person in their position feels the exact same way

ughhh

After reading this thread I really hope they don't trade Amendola. If a rumor of the trade creates this type of reaction I would be fearful of the reaction to it actually happening.

It is starting to feel more and more like Tebow Time in these Amendola threads.
