The 2014 Mock draft Thread.

I'd do the super condensed version.

Cut Vince Wilfork, Isaac Sapoaga, & Adrian Wilson

Extend McCourty Connolly & Gost

Restructure Mankins

That should give you about 27 Million Free

Re-Signings (only first year amount included)

Talib 6M
Svitek 2M
Fletcher > 1M
Aiken > 1M

Let all our other guys walk unless they come back on Vet Mins.

Other Signings

Allen - DE - 4M
Cooper - WR - 3M

We still have about 8-9M left incase someone else pops up we want. I will need to look into it more.

Draft

#1 - Trade back unless someone is there like Ebron - TE/Benjerman - WR (I no longer like Amaro at this spot and D is deep). Do not trade back more than 10 picks though.

#2 (around 36) - ASJ - TE
#2 Easley - DT
#3 (around 68) Stanley-Jean Baptiste - CB
#3 Bucannon - SS
#4 Coleman - WR
#6 Colt Lyrela - TE
#6?
#7? Just long shots with high upside like Colt.

Connolly is not a FA. He's under contract, with a $4M cap hit.

My point exactly. Hopefully he's learned from that one. We could probably have traded 17 and 33 to Jacksonville for 10 and 76 and grabbed Watt, a dominant player.

I think Donald could have a JJ Watt kind of impact. That's worth giving up a lot for. 5 years of a true impact lineman at low cost (with the 5th year option) = priceless.

As much as I like Donald he's not Watt.

EDIT: Also you're still using a draft pick we don't even possess at this time to get the trade done. I really don't think RM is getting dealt.

Truer words.... Donald is becoming, by far, the most overrated player at the combine.

As much as I like Donald he's not Watt.

He won't put up 20 sacks, or bat down 16 balls. But he'll be a guy who the offense has to account for on every single snap, or he'll totally blow up the play. And he'll be a beast on 3rd down, our Achilles' heel.

Potentially big news for Mock lovers everywhere:

The Panthers have been clearing salary cap space this week, but they won’t need any of it for left tackle Jordan Gross.

Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer reports that Gross has decided to retire rather than return for a 12th NFL season. An official announcement is expected to come on Wednesday.

If for some reason we did end up with the number 33 pick in addition to 29, I hate trading both for Donald. There's a real nice sweet spot in the 30-50 range.

I would much rather have Beckham and Shazier then just Donald.

This draft is so deep its not the time to start trading away picks.

Opps, I'll fix that. In that case Extend/Re-negotiate it. I don't think we should pay our OGs the way we have been especially when they have not played up to it for the most part.

Besides that what did you think?

I would love to have 4 picks between 33-90. This draft is so deep.

On another topic, Troy Niklas, I think has the highest ceiling of any tight end in this draft, but he is very raw. How far do you think he fell after the combine? CJ Fiedorowicz really improved his stock, but I am still not impressed with his tape, he doesnt seem to be dynamic and gets taken down pretty easily for a guy his size. Will Niklas be around at the end of round 3 or maybe even in round 4?

Good overall effort. To quibble:

- I thought you overpaid for Svitek.
- I think Riley Cooper will cost for than $3M/year, but I'd love to get him.
- I'm not a fan of Jared Allen, and I think he will want more $$$.
- I love the Easley pick if Donald is out of range.
- I like SBJ.
- I love Deone Bucannon in the 3rd, but I doubt he will be available.

I hope so. Not sure what's going to happen with ASJ but, if the team doesn't target him in the first or second (should he still be available), I wouldn't be upset with Niklas.

Ryan Mallet is not getting traded but if that were to happen I'd be pleased.

I'm not sure Su'a-Filo will last into the 2nd but, other than that and Lyerla, I have no issues with this.

With all the possible movement with the cap, Mocks have become more useless than usual (Not that they might not still be fun for some/many of you). If the number's 130, we can see the Patriots limited to one point in FA. If the number's 135, it's saturday night in Sioux City.

Draft DL in round 1? Not if the Patriots sign Bryant and Jackson.

FA safety would be too expensive, opening up a possibility in the draft? Whoa! Not so fast there, sparky.

We're stuck waiting on a final number, because the rumored range is just too much to even make semi-solid assumptions with.

Just my $02.

Yeah I am not so sure about Lyerla either; to be honest I am leaning against it strongly.

Good point, but who is Jackson?

OK, here we go with a first ever attempt at a mock draft ...

First off, this is not my "dream" scenario, and given BB's M.O. regarding roster building and associated "management of information," this could never be anything but a ludicrously remote possibility of what "could" happen, but what the heck, here is my scenario for what it's worth:

• Re-sign: Edelman eek, Fletcher, Svitek, Aiken
• Restructure and/or extend: Wilfork, Mankins, McCourty, Gostkowski, Connolly
• Buh-bye: Talib eek, Blount, Spikes, Wendell
• Hello: Chandler (TE)
• "Bill wants to talk to you, bring your playbook with you": Mallett to Vikings for #72

• Draft:

#29 Kyle Fuller, CB
#62 Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE
#72 Christian Jones, LB
#93 Joel Bitonio, G
#126 A.J. McCarron, QB
#182 Deandre Coleman, DE
#190 Aaron Colvin, CB
#221 Trey Millard, FB

• Explanations:

Regarding to Edelman and Talib, this is a real quandry, isn't it? Both were super valuable to the team this year, but both have had injury issues in years past, and now both are likely looking for significant pay days. Based on his position, and what he is clearly capable of doing when he is right physically and mentally/emotionally, Talib is a lot more valuable to the team in my opinion, but for the same reason it's my perception that the market for Talib (from his perspective) will be better than the market for Edelman. I think Edelman's market value will be hindered by a pretty deep-looking WR draft class, among other things. For this reason, and based on the value Edelman brings to the Pats based on versatility and special teams contributions, I think the Pats will offer him close enough to what any other team will offer him, and he'll wind up back here. Some wishful thinking on my part, probably.

Regarding free agency, I only listed Chandler, but expect another couple of veterans to provide depth at OL, DL, and LB.

Regarding the draft, specifically Kyle Fuller in Round 1, this is based a lot on my expectations that they will lose Talib, for sure, but since this whole exercise is a complete "WTF" for me anyway, I thought it amusing (and not totally ridiculous) to go for what is hopefully a non-injury-prone version of Ras-I Dowling.
