The 2014 Mock draft Thread.

Trades:
New England Patriots trade pick #29 to the Houston Texans (who use #29 to draft Zack Martin) for picks #33, and #65.
New England Patriots trade Ryan Mallett, and a conditional 2015 draft pick to the Minnesota Vikings for picks #40 and #72.

Mock:
#33 – Louis Nix III, NT/DT
#40 – Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT
#62 – Travis Swanson, OC
#65 – Ed Reynolds, FS/SS
#72 – Troy Niklas, TE
#93 – Marcus Smith, DE/OLB
#126 – Brandon Coleman, WR
Compensatory – Telvin Smith, LB/S
#182 – Trey Burton, TE/WR
#190 – Pierre Desir, CB
#229 – Jeff Janis, WR

Two in one day. We're spoiled :)

I have no problem at all with this so a couple or three minor nit picks that should not be considered as criticism:

1. I prefer ASJ to Niklas
2. Pierre Desir that late doesn't seem right.
3. Not overly keen on Ed Reynolds' value there. Not saying you are wrong, I might need to reevaluate.
4. I really like the Trey Burton pick. Now I need to persuade you onto Antone Exum as a CB/S prospect.
5. Nix/Tuitt is a dream scenario. I could see it happening (just) but how often, as fans of Patriots drafts do dream scenarios ever happen?

What do you think about this?

#33-Louis Nix
#40-Stephon Tuitt
#62-Travis Swanson
#65-Austin Seferian-Jenkins
#93-Marcus Smith
#126-Pierre Desir
#182-Trey Burton
#190-Jonathan Dowling
#TBD-Antone Exum
#229-Jeff Janis, WR

I took in to account that it is unlikely we would get two picks for Mallett.

Just a game, but I got this mock out of my most recent attempt at First-Draft (with a lot of trading back):

39. Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh.
62. Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech. I'm not a huge Amaro fan, but he would be great value here.
68. Christian Jones, LB, Florida St.
70. Weston Richburg, OC, Colorado.
94. Dominique Easley, DT, Florida.
99. Jimmy Ward, S, Northern Illinois.
125. Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska.
143. Brandon Thomas, OG, Clemson.
174. Antone Exum, DB, Virginia Tech.
182. Brent Urban, DT/DE, Virginia.
190. Marcus Martin, OC, USC.
221. Aaron Lynch, DE, USF.

I could live with that draft. :D

That draft would have Bob Kraft putting an order in to Jostens. :rocker:

That's very very nice. Not sure we need three big secondary guys but if we ended up with those first five picks then I'd be too drunk to care. I'll be happy with one of those.

What is your starting offensive line?

What is your starting offensive line?

Perfect world I would like to have a roster that looks like this (trimmed of course to 53 prior to camp). I think Swanson can start week 1 but in the case that he was unable to I would look at a veteran like Goodwin who is a UFA. I am comfortable moving Cannon to right guard; I think he would develop into a top player at that position.

- QB, Brady, Cassel (UFA)
- RB, Ridley, Blount, Bolden
- 3rd Down RB, Vereen, McGuffie
- FB, Develin
- X WR, Dobson, Cooper (UFA), Janis (#229), Harrison, Slater
- Y WR, Edelman, Amendola, Boyce, Moe
- TE, Chandler (UFA), Seferian-Jenkins (#65)
- Flex TE, Gronkowski, Burton (#182)
- LT, Solder
- LG, Mankins, Kline
- OC, Swanson (#62), Crave
- RG, Cannon, Gabe Carimi (UFA)
- RT, Vollmer, Zusevics

- LDE, Ninkovich, Smith (#93)
- 3-tech DT, Tuitt (#40), Armstead, C. Jones
- 1-tech NT, Wilfork, Nix (#33), Siliga
- RDE, C. Jones, Buchanan, Bequette
- SOLB, Collins, White
- MLB, Hightower, Beauharnais
- WOLB, Mayo, Fletcher, Exum (TBD)
- LCB, Talib, Desir (#93)
- RCB, Dennard, Ryan, Arrington
- FS, McCourty, Harmon, Wilson
- SS, Ward (UFA), Dowling (#190), Ebner

Exum is a cornerback or safety, not a WOLB. If that was the way you were going, you'd have been better off leaving Telvin Smith in.

I'd be worried about starting a rookie at center, but I like the rest. Alex Mack would be my number one target, but if I couldn't get him Connolly would be plan B, and Goodwin would be plan C. I think you would have to sign Goodwin well before week one.

I'm one game in on Exum. Unfortunately I don't think he's a cornerback.

My ideal offseason would look something like this:

- Aqib Talib, 3 years, $19,500,000.00
- Julian Edelman, 4 years, $18,000,000.00
- LeGarrette Blount, 2 years, $2,600,000.00
- Dane Fletcher, 2 years, $1,700,000.00
- Alex Mack, 5 years, $ 31,250,000.00
- Michael Johnson, 2 years, $ 13,000,000.00
- Louis Delmas, 3 years, $10,000,000.00
- Riley Cooper, 3 years, $7,500,000.00
- Scott Chandler, 3 years, $3,600,000.00
- Matt Cassel, 2 years, $3,000,000.00
- Gabe Carimi, 1 year, $765,000.00

- Louis Nix, #29
- Stephon Tuitt, #33
- Austin Seferian-Jenkins, #62
- Pierre Desir, #93
- Anthony Steen, #126
- Trey Burton, #182
- Jeff Janis, #190
- Larry Webster, #229

We would have to manipulate the cap #s of course. The Johnson deal is based on what Avril received last season from Seattle.

QB - Brady, Cassel

3rd Down RB - Vereen

That seems incredibly ambitious to me, especially the FA signings. I'd be all for it if it happened, but I don't see much chance of all that happening.

I agree, it is extremely hopeful and unlikely. A man can dream :)

I'm going to go under the assumption all the good value is gone at 29 with this one. Several players of marginal value are left but we trade down from 29into the 40's while picking up a high 3rd rounder.

40 something - Austin Seferian-Jenkins TE Washington
64 - Marcus Smith OLB\DE Louisville
3A- Stanley Jean-Baptiste CB Nebraska
3B - Ego Ferguson DT LSU
4 - Marcus Martin C USC
6a. - Jonathan Dowling S W. Kentucky
6b. - Storm Johnson RB UCF
6 (comp). - John Urschel OG PSU
7. - Eric Ward WR Texas Tech

Assumptions are the Patriots being in a veteran safety if Gregory is cut for cap reasons, Talib is resigned on another one year deal and at least a couple veteran DTs are signed possibly one of them being VW on a restructure or Kelly if the knee works out. A veteran receiver is signed, Maclin is my preference.

I'm all for trading back if the "good value" is gone at 29. I think the sweet spot of this draft will be in the 3rd/4th round. I'd tweak your draft for my own favorite values:

- Trade back from 29 to around 40 or so, getting a 3rd round pick.
- Trade back again from 40 to around 45-48, getting a 4th round pick.
45 +/-. Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington. Works for me in this range. If he's gone I'd trade back some more and get Troy Niklas.
- Trade back from 62 to the early-mid 3rd, picking up an extra 4th round pick.
3a. Marcus Smith, Louisville or Christian Jones, Florida St.
3b. Stanley Jean-Baptiste, DB, Nebraska. If Kyle Fuller were somehow available he'd also get consideration.
3c. Dominique Easley, DT, Florida or Caraun Reid, DT, Princeton.
4a. Aaron Lynch, DE, USF.
4b. Marcus Martin, OC, USC.
4c. Antone Exum, DB, Virginia Tech.
6a. Richard Rodgers, TE, Cal. If he's gone then Xavier Grimble, TE, USC.
6b. Tyler Starr, LB, South Dakota.
6 (comp). Trey Millard, Oklahoma or Trey Bruton, Florida. H-Back.
7. Cameron Fleming, OL, Stanford. Storm Johnson would be fine if he's still available.

4b. Marcus Martin, OC, USC.
If he's gone then Xavier Grimble, TE, USC.

So you think BB has finally overcome his disdain for USC players?

- Matt Cassel, 2 years, $3,000,000.00

Just a thought: Is trading Mallett even worth it if the Pats are going to end up paying almost 3x as much for a veteran backup?

Honestly I thought it was a stretch that ASJ, Smith and Baptiste lasted as long as I had them going and you're pushing them back 5-10 slots. I thought about adding Tyler Starr but I just can't talk myself into Bill taking him. I also thought about Millard for this version.

I laughed at these being back to back posts.
