The 2014 Mock draft Thread.

2 Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
2 Will Sutton, DT, Arizona State
3 Andre Williams, RB, Boston College
3 Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame
3 Brandon Coleman, WR, Rutgers
4 A.J. McCarron, QB, Alabama
4 Brandon Thomas, OG, Clemson
5 Ross ****rell, CB, Duke

I done this on firstpick.com. Traded back in the 1st and picked up a 3rd, then traded back again into the 2nd and got another 3rd. Didn't do the rest of the draft, we'd prob pick up guys like Colvin and maybe Murray later on cause of injuries. This also doesn't include a trade for Mallett. I would love if this happened. Although I'd prefer to get a guard higher up, that could happen if we traded Mallett.

mock after the senior bowl hoping we can get a 2nd for mallett ill say 33 from the Texans in this case. That gives us picks of 29, 33, 61, 93, around 125, and then most likely 4 6th rounders and a 7th.

29. Aaron Donald/Ra'shede Hageman DT
these two are both beasts and I think 1 if not both will be available here at least right now the combine might move them up but one of these two would be perfect.

33. Allen Robinson WR
Love everything about this guy, was in a Patriots-esque offense at Penn State is 6' 3" can go get jump balls very well and is very quick and elusive. Pair him with Dobson and I think we have a great pair of outside WR's for the next decade

61. Troy Niklas TE
This guy is already a beast and hasn't been playing TE for very long at all i thought about going ASJ at 33 but thought Niklas gave us better value here and allowed us to get Robinson too

93. Marcus Smith DE/OLB / Stanley Jean-Baptiste CB/ Gabe Jackson OG
Was hoping I could get Dee Ford here as he would be a great third down pass rush specialist and could give us some versatility so we could run a couple 3-4 looks as well but on CBS he has raised to 18 overall which I think is way too high. Marcus Smith would be great athletic freak like collins that we can play all over the field. SJB is a huge corner in the mold of Sherman and who doesn't want that, could end up being an absolute and has great ball skills. Gabe Jackson or even Richburg would be the pick here if we can't get Mack in FA and aren't happy with our interior line guys currently

125. Caraun Reid DT
double dipping at DT is a pretty good idea especially if we cut Kelly Caraun Reid is someone that was one of my binkies last year and I know Manx or Mayo liked him too he has a really good performance at the senior bowl and could pair well with our first round DT as well as Wilfork and the rest of the crew.
If we don't cut Kelly our need here wouldn't be huge and I could see us going Turner from NDSU here

6th round pick: Ron Powell OLB
Florida guy former #1 recruit I think he has too much potential to pass up here

6th round pick #2: Aaron Murray QB
got injured, dropped and i'd be happy to pick him up here

6th round comp pick: Aaron Lynch DE/ De'anthony Thomas/other fast guys
the draft of Aaron's continue as we get a DE that has dropped that was considered a 1st or 2nd round pick last year similar to buchanon I think Lynch here is an absolute steal and would add great depth. I also threw in DAT and "other fast guys" as someone like Dri archer and Trey Millard could also be thrown in there i havent watched millard but people seem to really like him and DAT and dri are both explosive play makers

6th round comp: Richard Rogers TE
a known binky around this board one of the new move TE's and would compliment Niklas and Gronk well

7th: John Urschel OG
wish I could've gotten an OG/C earlier except the small possibility of Gabe Jackson or Weston Richburg but I loved the other guys I had more than the interior guys. I'm hoping we can pick up Alex Mack in FA which would help a lot in that department

That's pretty meh! for me. Like the Exum pick a lot and am OK with Niklas but am indifferent to pretty much everything else. Yankey is borderline acceptable but no better than that at that spot.

"Meh!" sums it up for me, too. I'd be OK with Yankey and happy with Niklas. Will Clarke might be a good pick at 189. But I'm not over-impressed.

BTW, shouldn't those drafts be in the "win, fail or meh?" thread?

Meh. McCullors is massive but all the scouts, ALL THE SCOUTS, at the Senior Bowl agreed he looked absolutely awful. Love #29 and #61 though.

What are your thoughts on Exum? Excellent value CB/FS for me if he can be had day 3. I think he has 2nd to 3rd round value without his ACL injury.

Win, FAIL, or Meh? isn't a single thread.

I use that for drafts where I'm honestly curious as to what people think. Then there's the obvious FAIL drafts (e.g., one that gives the Pats nothing but secondary players on days one and two).

Still getting familiar with a lot of the draft prospects but here's what I came up with using:

I can think of some fairly disgusting sexual references to describe how I would feel with that draft if it actually happened but I fear you are being somewhat ambitious with where those players are placed, particularly the first three. Still, mocks don't get much dreamier than that.

Not ambitious at all. It's a simulator. I chose who was available when I was on the clock. Now could the simulator be off; ABSOLUTELY; but I just chose who it gave me as available. It's a pretty cool little program. Check it out if you get a chance. Thanks for the feedback though. I couldn't resist the double dip at TE.

Well yes, it's probably off. I'd be very surprised if all three were there in reality. It could happen, Hageman and Niklas are fairly raw and ASJ's stock seems to be slipping, and if it did then I'd be celebrating with everyone else.

Notes:

I'm not really focused on predicting an offseason, there's no real way to know but this mock assumes resigning Talib and Fletcher certainly and probably Blount. Edelman doesn't really affect the mock. I've put in a Mallett trade for a second round pick but it's a bonus pick not an essential one in that Kelly/Armstead would cover it if the pick wasn't made.

And out respect for Dryheat44, NO PICTURES

#29 Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, TE, Washington

I think two things are key for a first round Patriots pick; Perfect size for the position and top notch athleticism. ASJ has both of those for me. With Gronk a question mark to start next season and because there's virtually nothing behind him, a quality TE is my #1 need for this team and ASJ is the best inline TE in this draft. Tom Brady didn't have a big target last season when Gronk wasn't available. Now he will.

(Mid 2nd) Mallett trade bonus pick

Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame

With Kelly and Armstead possibly on the team next year, I don't think this is a must pick position. But Tuitt has an ideal 5-tech frame and was productive in college with 18.5 sacks the last two years. If BB wants to go with an odd-front then I'd relish a combination of Kelly, Armstead and Tuitt on the ends.

#62 Travis Swanson, OC, Arkansas

I really wanted to put Marcus Smith here but there's just too much redundancy to draft him early with Collins on the team. I know Richburg outperformed Swanson at the Senior Bowl but very few prospects have screamed potential Patriot to me in the way Swanson does. For now, he stays in.

#93 Justin Ellis, DT, Louisiana Tech

He's a big body, 342lb, but as his excellent post season so far shows, he's more than that. He's a load to block one on one and he's displayed some real power to pressure the pocket and/or backfield. Not a passrusher by any stretch but someone that can push the pocket enough to prevent QBs from stepping up. One of the early post-season, pre-draft process stars.

#126 Seantrel Henderson, OL, Miami

Questions abound with Henderson but this is a player with first round size and feet. will it click for him in the NFL? I don't know but this is one of my Patriots value picks. This could be one of those picks in two years time that has people once again marveling at BB.

#182 Logan Thomas, QB, Virginia Tech

I just can't get away from his combination of speed and size. Find away to use him BB and Josh. Just do it.

#190 Richard Rodgers, TE, Cal

Statistically stacks up very well against the likes of Jace Amaro. I'm not sure he'll be down this low post-combine.

6th Rnd Comp Antone Exum, CB/S, Virginia Tech

I've said this upthread, but I watched three games of Exum and in those games he ran side by side covering Sammy Watkins and he forced three fumbles. He's not the dominating hitter you ideally want from a safety but he does have the size at 6'1" and 220lbs. He missed 2013 because of an ACL which explains his stock but he's 2nd or 3rd round real value down here in the 6th.

6th Rnd Comp Ethan Westbrooks, DE, W Texas A&M

An interesting late round pass rush option to battle it out with Buchanan. Dominated in the Shrine Game.

7th Round Lorenzo Taliaferro, RB, Coastal Carolina

a 6' 230lb running back who has really good hands and runs good routes. He was also the best pass blocking RB at The Senior Bowl. Oh yes, did I forget to mention. 6 YPC and 23TDs in his Senior year. Doesn't have the speed or wiggle to be an everyday starter but let's just say that he won't ease the pressure on the defense when he comes in to spell Blount.

Priority UDFA

Kenny Guiton, QB, Coastal Carolina

Said my piece on him. A coaches mind in a decent QB body.

Joe Clancy, QB, Merrimack

Another camp QB. Very productive college QB who improved year on year. Some elements of his game reminded me a little of Brady.

Kain Colter, WR/QB, Noerthwestern

A white smurf QB that can run! If he leaves it's goodbye Julian Edelman, hello Julian Edelman.

Trey Burton, WR/FB/TE, Florida

At only 224lbs, Burton doesn't have Hernandez's size but there are similarities in their games. Burton has the speed and moves to go yard.

Austin Wentworth OG/OT, Fresno State.

Carr's blindside protecter. I suspect his stock will rebound.

Qua Cox, CB, Jackson State

Lacks ideal size and athleticism but he's a shutdown corner in CFB. He was also a late Senior Bowl call up so he's not to be ignored.

Have you changed your opinion of Marcus Smith?

Have you changed your opinion of Marcus Smith?

No but there just wasn't a way to get him up. I do base my mocks on players I like but I do try to consider what BB might actually do. I think it's more likely BB drafts Swanson than Smith.

Pretty strong draft Manx. Getting Tuitt, Swanson and Ellis is a huge plus and on top of that you pound in a 3 tight end set into the mix. Gronkowski, ASJ and Rodgers would be pretty stout coupled with the continued development of Dobson, Thomkins and Boyce who hopefully make the sophomore leap.

Thankyou. I personally feel it's better than "pretty strong", but I'll take it

And somehow DraftTek already has a new mock up:

1. Trent Murphy, DE, Stanford
2. Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame
3. Mike Davis, WR, Texas
4. Daniel McCullers, DT, Tennessee
6. Ricardo Allen, CB, Purdue
6. Caraun Reid, DT, Princeton
7. Wesley Johnson, OT, Vanderbilt

Well, I like the first two rounds, but it's pretty meh after that.

I got pretty excited by the first 2 picks. Caraun Reid in the 6th is a good pick. Otherwise meh, as you say.
