I'd take Garoppolo ahead of Carr. High second rounder for me. Might not be there now but he really looks the part.

The NFLPA Collegiate game was yester day too. Sounds like JC Copeland (LSU, FB) and Kyri Thornton (DT, Southern Miss) were the standouts:

One of the players whose best work didn't show up on the stat sheet was LSU's J.C. Copeland. The Tigers fullback did carry the ball twice for two touchdowns, but he was making the most noise for his blocks helping to spring Wilkerson and the other National running backs.

Both Bill Polian and Todd McShay, who were calling the game for ESPN, couldn't stop raving about Copeland's ability to get in front of his runner and take the linebacker out of the play.

He took home MVP honors:

On the defensive side of the ball, Southern Miss' Khyri Thornton was the name on the announcers' lips. Time and again, McShay especially was praising Thornton's ability. The Golden Eagle was getting in the backfield and stuffing the run game at the line of scrimmage.

The performance shouldn't come as a huge surprise, as the ESPN draft expert listed the defensive tackle as the best prospect in the game,

Also, my choice for future TB backup, Kenny Guiton was there. Remember that he's the son of a coach, is a team captain despite being a backup at Ohio State and is respected enough by Urban Meyer and his staff to be talked of as coming back to be a coach.

Braxton Miller’s backup was one of the more intriguing names here and he probably had the best overall performance of all the quarterbacks, especially in the decision-making area. Consistent with the tape, he had plenty of “wow” throws mixed with a handful of “who/what was he throwing to?” throws. Guiton has an elongated, slightly 3-quarters release, and his footwork was inconsistent when he was pressured which caused him to miss high on occasion. However, he had several really impressive throws. His best had scouts buzzing as it was against pressure where he put just enough touch on a line drive 20 yards down the seam between 3 defenders where only his receiver could get it. Overall, I like him as a developmental prospect, but the key is consistency with him.

Worth a draft pick though? Not so sure

Don't forget we may end up with four sixth rounders, two of which won't be tradeable. For a potential long-term clipboard holder, I'd say that's absolutely worth a draft pick.

I liked what i saw from phillip gaines from rice.
Needs to bulk up a little but has the body for it. I'll be very curious to see how he runs at the combine.

I agree, but it's the fact he has barely played that makes me want to gladly sign him post-draft and not draft him

I'm not worried about a sixth or seventh rounder - they don't often amount to much anyway (although the last couple of years have been productive). In my envisioning of how it happens, they'd bring in a vet FA as well - a Chad Henne or similar to compete in camp with Guiton for that #2 spot.

That's what I mean. Trade Mallett, sign Henne (or other vet), draft Guiton. Guiton and vet compete for Mallett's spot with hopefully Guiton winning.

if the Pats trade Mallett, they'll carry 3 QBs on the roster.
