Rumor - McDaniels to be the Browns HC

I wish it was the old days when other NFL teams could not talk to assistant coaches if their teams were still in the playoffs. Too bad if you'd get a late start on next year. If you want the guy that bad, then you should have to wait.

The main thing I ragged on O'Brien about in 2009 was calling the Kevin Faulk draw play 45641498786314864561 times per game.

Funny as I dont think we call the draw play enough right now specifically to Vareen. I think it is becoming a trend that Vareen works the perimeter and I feel a few draw plays to him up the middle will help to keep teams honest.

he has over the years lost players he was comfortable with and coordinators he's already lost Josh before who he calls the best coach he would wish for and a dear friend.
2. If Belichick has handpicked Josh to be his successor here and has been grooming him as such this would be all for not. This would really show how long Bill is planning to be riding the saddle.
3. If Josh leaves how much of the staff players will he take with him losing Edelman, Blount could be devestating to this offense. Losing quality cosches could be devestating to the organization as a whole.
4. The distraction in our preperation and Bradys morale can not be understated. We need the team and all players coaches fully focused. Not focused on what kind of furniture Josh wants in his office.

Ultimately its Joshes decision and going back home to coach and have a ton of cap room a lot of high draft picks and a general manager that adores him. Would be to tough for anyone to pass up.
Whatever his decision I wish him all the best and the Browns would instantly become my second team.

Honestly I'm not anywhere near convinced that Belichick is going to hang it up so I never expected to see McDaniels step in for him here. I don't think I'd go anywhere near Cleveland, though, after they sent Chud packing after a single season. Denver already cut McDaniels time short after just 18 months so going to a team with bush league ownership like Cleveland seems dumb.

There are better jobs out there for him.

Whether Tim lead his team to the playoffs with an 8-8 record or a 13-3 record is irrelevant. The goal is to get into the payoffs, then win those playoff games, and go to the Super Bowl. That year that 8-8 allowed Tim and his team to enter the playoffs and not only that, but he also helped them WIN a playoff game.

There have been many teams prior to 2011 and since that have got into the playoffs with 8-8 records. Heck the Packers just got into the Playoffs this year with an 8-7-1 record. Needless to say, I guess it is just another one of your attempts at trying to discredit Tim.

Keeping them honest is one thing. But to attempt to keep them honest when runs up the middle are either going for minimal or no gain, or a loss is simply a bad idea. It's pretty much a waste of a down and the probability of getting into a third and long situation is high after that.

It always comes down to Ownership.. The former Browns expansion owners couldn't help but interfere and their tolerance span was miniscule. They hired and fired Coaches annually.

The new ownership promised some patience, but Chudzinski didn't even last 365 days as HC. The "new" ownership is as dumb and stupid as the former one. The Cleveland fan was correct; the Browns are owned by the Three Stooges.

I recall a talented HC who refused to even interview with another losing organization saying :

"I want and opportunity, NOT a sentence !".

I'm not a fan of Daboll but i think this is right on the money. Continuity is what is important. This is Brady's offense and he has been running it his entire career. It morphs year to year but the language and reads etc... stay within the system they have constructed. It has never been a situation where a new OC with new language and systems comes in and implements a new offense that Brady has to learn, and as long as he is here i expect that to continue, which is why they never went out and got a guy like Martz etc... to come in and implement his offense. I would rather see MacDaniels stay but if he leaves I expect that the new OC will come from this staff, or be a guy who has worked in it before, not a guy from outside with a new system to implement.

Maybe it wouldn't be Daboll. I'm not a huge fan either, but then again, Josh was a personnel assistant trained up to do the job. The team even had no official OC in 2005 while they were grooming him, so maybe BB can do the same. Or maybe it's someone else, O'Shea or Godsey. But whoever it is, you're right, they will be working in the current offense, not their own system.

Overall I agree with what you are saying but I think my concern stems from what I have highlighted above. Brady is a big reason that our offense has clicked in many of those years. The year with Cassel of course shows the coaching is a big part of it as well but overall Brady played at an elite level which covered up coaching/personnel issues.

The job should go to the best OC candidate available whether internal or external. I doubt that even if an external candidate is brought in, he would be allowed to purge/start over with the system. I don't think Belichick would allow that. The overall system would exist more or less as now but new concepts may be introduced or utilized which could be beneficial long term.

Daboll in his previous OC jobs has not shown much. Again he didn't have QBs to work with but then that goes back to how much Brady is covering up the system and vice versa. If the only reason Daboll gets the job is that he is here, then that could be detrimental.

I guess it just goes back to what I was saying in that I just hope they look at all options available rather than just blindly putting Daboll in McDaniel's place. That's all.

I think we're both in agreement that the system is going to remain so while they may look externally, you have to wonder which big-name OC is going to want to come in and run an offense they may not be familiar with, especially when they know they can't make the changes they want to.

The Haley situation with Big Ben was different, and despite Big Ben's 2 Super Bowls, Haley was allowed to implement his system. That wouldn't fly here, and so someone like Haley would never have come to NE.

So how many top-notch coordinators are going to come in and not run their own offense? Probably not many, certainly not any that I can think of. So the best bet is probably an internal candidate. Someone like Daboll is interesting because he's got internal as well as external experience. I wonder if that will work for or against him.

It's a tough decision for McDaniels because if he is fired a second time it's unlikely he would be given a 3rd opportunity. On the flip-side there is a lot of talent and 5 draft picks in the first 3 rounds of the draft.
