Patriots marvel at Logan Mankins?s toughness - Sports - The Boston Globe

I know this is old news, but it is a good article. When he was getting help off, I think all of us were like "OHhhhhhh, crap." For him to get helped off, they must have thought it was bad, and then when the announce he is in the locker room, I was complaining to my wife "WTF when are we going to catch a freaking break injury-wise."

Then he pulled a Paul Pierce and came back and rocked it!

Hope we have a relatively healthy team in two weeks! :rocker:

Difference being that Mankins was definitely hurt and Paul Pierce was an attention whore.

To be honest, my reaction when he got hurt was that he was the guy that offense could most afford to lose. Kline held his own at guard against Ngata in the Ravens game, and Mankins has been mediocre all year... really, the last five. I'll give him credit for being tough and filling in admirably at tackle against the Ravens, but I don't think losing him would be a big blow either. At this point, losing Hoomanwanui or Develin might slow the offense down more.

You could not be more wrong. On the surface it may look like he's been blowing some assignments that have led to "high profile highlight reel" Brady sacks, because on occasion for many games this season, he has. But those are only 1 or 2 out of 50-70 plays per game. I would argue that his overall play has been the glue that has held this $hitshow of an oline together. And without Mankins, our running game this year would be nowhere near what it has been. No, we cannot afford a serious season ending injury to Logan Mankins. We need this guy desperately!

Agreed. Since Vollmer has gone down, he's easily been our best OL. His struggles appear to be more or less related to trying to help Wendell on passing plays.

Logan Mankins is the best offensive lineman the Patriots have. That's true now, and that's true when every one of them is healthy.

Second place is not even close.

Mankins is a badass. You have to appreciate a guy who plays through pain the way he does. Guy played on a torn ACL all season once.

I'm guessing he's got a high ankle sprain right now, but I'm also guessing he'll play through it regardless. And Logan Mankins with a bad ankle is still better than anything else we could plug in his place, so we'll take it.

Not sure about the "not even close" part, when healthy. You have to remember how long Vollmer has been playing with a bad back. When he was healthy, he looked like he was on his way to being one of the best, RT's in the NFL. Even then, I still had Mankins over Vollmer as our best OL this year.

I disagree. Mankins is closer to the bottom than the top. Vollmer is the best, and it's not even close. Solder is next. Mankins is better than Connolly and Wendell, but only just.

What in God's name did you see of Solder this year to make you think he is better than Mankins? He was anywhere from decent to awful on any given play and Mankins is a top LG in the entire league. As a matter of fact, the play at LT actually improved when Mankins replaced him in the Miami game and for the Baltimore game.

Mankins is one tough S O B. I was concerned when he was helped off the field. Kline did well last week, when Mankins slide out to tackle. But if Solder is hurt again, not sure what that line will look like. I was shocked when I saw him back in the game and running down the field on a few screen plays. Guy is tough as nails.....What a message it sends to the other team, yeah, we're hurt, but will still kick your.....

Agreed, if healthy I'd say we have two elite offensive linemen in Mankins and Volllmer (and I say that despite probably falling closer to a Mankins detractor than 'fan'). Solder is a competent LT, Connolly is a competent center but a well below average RG, and Wendell is pretty bad.

The Pats can certainly do worse than Solder, but I'm not as high on him as a lot of people around here. He needs to put some serious time in with a strength and conditioning coach in the offseason because he's somewhat weak for a LT. He's susceptible to bull rushes and speed rushers at the same time whereas Light was strong enough to handle a bull rush but somewhat struggled with speed rushers. If Solder builds up his upper body strength in the offseason, he would really stand to improve in one facet of his game. Wendell is pretty piss poor as a starter and should be backup at best. Center needs to be a priority in the offseason.

Vollmer had a solid, but overrated, rookie season in 2009. In 2010, he was excellent. In 2011, he got hurt again. He's never been the same. It's not that he's bad, or anything. He's just lost some pass blocking ability. And that's why Mankins is far and away the best OL on the team, IMO.

Mankins

(Healthy) Vollmer
Solder

(Struggling)Vollmer
Connolly
Cannon/Wendell

You and I often seem to be watching different Patriots teams. This is another of those times.

Our difference in opinion just seems to be where we would put a healthy Vollmer on that list on top of Cannon and Wendell. For me...

Mankins

(Healthy) Vollmer

Solder

(Struggling)Vollmer
Connolly
Cannon

Wendell

But yeah, Mankins is the best OL on the team, both in run blocking (where he's elite) and pass blocking (where he's very good). Those ragging on Mankins' pass blocking this season need to take a close look at Wendell's play (or lack thereof) and how much Mankins has been covering for him.

I often wonder how much of Mankins supposed issues at times have been because of Wendell. From my casual observation, he seems to blow the schemes more than any other lineman. For me, there is a massive need to upgrade at CE through either Free Agency or the draft.

Mankins is our best linemen. I don't have a big gap to Vollmer then Solder behind him. The rest are a wash.

He shouldn't have gone back in though. Now it'll take longer to heal.

Dr. Gill: "I'm afraid it's bad news, Logan. Your foot is hanging by a thread; the ankle is shattered in three places. Ligaments torn ... likely nerve damage as well."

Mankins: "Gimme the needle, tape it up and let's go."

In fairness, Mankins probably could have lost his leg from the knee down and Gill would list him as probable to return.
