#Browns have requested permission to interview Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, in addition to Seahawks DC Dan Quinn, according to league source.

He is on the short list. BB also said he would be speaking with some newly available former coaches.

Tom Brady Calls Josh McDaniels His ?Best Offensive Coach,? Wants Him to Stay With Patriots for ?Rest of My Life? | New England Patriots | NESN.com

Not just a good coach, or a great coach. He's "the best offensive coach I could ever imagine". The ever diplomatic Tom Brady just put Josh McDaniels above BOB and Saint Charlie Weis.

I am not a huge McDaniels fan overall, my feelings toward him are week-to-week but for the sake of consistency and the evil I know being better than the evil I don’t know I would prefer to have him back. With that said Brady talking highly of him to the media is meaningless in my opinion, the current offensive coordinator being the best he has ever had is not shocking to hear from Brady, people tell their partners that sex with them is the best they’ve ever had all the time, you have to believe that or at least act as if you believe that otherwise things will not work out.

I'm in the "who really cares" category if McDaniels leaves. The new OC will inherit Brady, Ridley/Vereen, Gronk, Dobson/KT, Amendola, and potentially Edelman and one of the big 3 rookie TEs.

The offense will roll no matter the OC. We've had a top 10 offense with Brady every year except 05 I think.

Given the changes in the receiver corps between last year and this, then add all the injuries to the TE's and OL, and this might be Josh McDaniels' finest job. A job far surpassing the great jobs he did in 2007 when he had it all and broke records. The great job he did in 2008 when he lost his HOF QB, and coached a QB who hadn't started a meaningful game since HS to the 8th best overall offense in the league and a 4000 yd season. I don't know what McDaniels has to do dissuade his haters that's he's doing a great job.

BTW- I would be very surprised if he left this soon. I really believe that there was some kind of mutual agreement when he returned that he stay for a while before he left looking for new HCing jobs. BB likes stability in his coaching staff. It could be that he's the HC in waiting. That's speculation, but I think my speculation is backed up by the fact that the Browns have publically asked to talk to the Denver and Seattle OC's, and no mention of Josh. I don't see him going anywhere. So all the haters who would all call a much better game if THEY were in charge, can be relieved that their whipping boy will be around for them to have a target.

If they are keeping Turner then a defensive minded hC makes much more sense. I don't know why any of the offensive guys would go to Cleveland to have turner run the offense.

Either way i think the fact that they are keeping Turner demonstrates that they are as screwed up as always. If they were serious about bringing in a top notch HC then they would bring in a guy who puts his own staff together and does it his way.

I think the advice Belichick would give MacDaniels is the same he used guiding his decision to come to NE and pass on the Jets job; you are only going to get a couple of chances, and you need to put yourself in a position where succeeding or failing comes down to your performance, so don't let someone else make all the decisions while you take the responsibility and accountability for them. I think MacDaniels will turn the Browns down if they ask, and will wait for an opportunity where he calls the shots. That may or may not come, but i don't see MacDaniels letting Joe Banner pick his staff and the players while he takes the responsibility for the outcome.

This kind of insight & information is why I read Patsfans!

You have an alarm that rings every time someone mentions Tebow, don't you?

When the bell rings does an angel gets its wings?

The thought of McDaniels as a HC gives me nightmares.

Not sure why. All he did is get you into the playoffs. His only mistake was drafting Tebow and even then he got more out of him than any other coach could. So what if he traded Cutler, he sucks and was an asshat. Got rid of Marshall and brought in D Thomas. How did that work out? He had a plan and they didn't see it through. You guys would be gushing over JM if they brought in Peyton Manning for him to work with. All would of been forgotten. Instead Fox and Elway get the credit lol.

That is what I am here for my man… Thanks for the positive feedback I was feeling unappreciated but your post gave me the motivation I need to continue to post like an idiot in 2014…

This one to me is pretty easy to read. The reason the Browns are rumored to be interested in McDaniels and O'Brien is because they like Hoyer going forward, as well they should because in his few games starting the Browns went from hapless under Weeden to suddenly looking like a playoff contender, before a slow decline under Campbell where they were good enough to just lose, before finally collapsing into being Cleveland again.

I think you need to read it again, Hoyer was only here during the years O’Brien was the offensive coordinator; Hoyer has no connection to Josh McDaniels.

I hope he doesnt go. Hard to find continuity and a good replacement for him. He is as good there is as an OC. Every fan base hates its OC. Just need to look at the threads when O'Brien was OC.

The Three Stooges in Cleveland got scorched by the media and will have a hard time convincing the fans that Josh isn't Son of Mangini who was hated in Cleveland for trying to be a Mini-Me Belichick.

They all ran the same offensive system... if they like Hoyer, then they'll fish for guys with similar backgrounds to his.

That they want to talk to both O'Brien and McDaniels, while Hoyer was the only QB to actually be successful with them since Anderson, seems to me too much of a coincidence.

Disbelieveland

It Is What It Is » Tom Brady on D&C: ?We?ve definitely got a group of overachievers?

On Josh McDaniels: “Josh is the best offensive coach I could ever imagine. He’s so prepared, he’s so confident in what he does. He figures out a way every week to get us in the best position as players to win. I have so much respect for him and what he does for me, what he does for our team. he’s just a great coach. He’s got a lot of poise, got a lot of discipline. I hope he doesn’t go anywhere. I mean, I’d love for him to coach me the rest of my life. But that’s just the way it is. He’s one of my best friends, and I love having him.”
not all pats share the sentiments tom. They know better.

I've been critical of some of McDaniels playcalling in the past (including this year in that game where they inexplicably abandoned the run)

But overall, I agree whole heartedly. And sure Brady deserves a ton of credit for executing - but overall McDaniels has shown that he's completely adaptable.

I can't see him turning down any interview. It keeps him out there as a viable candidate. How much control he has on picking his players will be the key.

I wish they didn't allow teams to interview other coaches who's seasons are still in progress. It should be tampering. Unnecessary distraction.

Mult league sources tell me Josh McDaniels has started calling coaches about staff in CLE. Said jobs his IF he wants but hasn't accepted yet
Naturally, #Browns cannot/will not comment or admit this because they must comply w the Rooney Rule before officially offering a HC job
Browns reached out to McDaniels thru back channels & basically offered on the spot. Source in #Browns said "official" interviews start Tues

This Will Burge guy writes for Bleacher Report right now, but was with ESPN Cleveland until last August. I guess that makes him kind of trustworthy here. I can't say this would really surprise me at all.

Josh would probably take UFA Edelman with him, the Browns have $46M in cap space and we know Josh loves Edelman.

Okay, now I just went from feeling confident that he'd stay to feeling pissed in a matter of seconds.

And the Edelman comment made it even worse...

Hope to hell we don't lose either one, but I have a feeling that at least one will indeed move on.

I agree with Froob. I wish that McDaniels didn't have to have this distraction at this point of the season. Let freaking CLE deal with their own damn problems. We're at a critical point in the season.

All of this said, I'm a bit surprised that Belichick/JMcD didn't have an agreement in place 2 yrs ago when he re-joined. I'm sure there was an assumption that he'd get some HC offers.
