Philip smith, principal trumpet of the New York Phil is retiring after this season if you've never heard him play, do yourself a favor and do so. He is the Jim brown of trumpet playing.

Enjoyed this. Thank you! Refreshing that in a year of Manning media worship he chooses Brady as his subject of comparison to a maestro orchestra conductor. Probably because Brady is a true team quarterback while Manning uses his team for personal stats and self glorification.

not true at all. most musicians are barely paying attention to the sheet. By the time it's being played, it's muscle memory. The sheet is just a casual hint. The conductor is controlling the pace, mood, and, tone of the music. The musicians are watching him far more intensely than the music sheet.

Here's a local kid (from Lowell) who grew up to do great things, went to Vienna during a time when anti-semitism still lingered and where the snooty Viennese looked down upon the upstart Americans, and took over helm of one of the most storied cultural institutions.

I wish the subtitles were available but you can get an idea of what he's doing here. At some point, Lenny's so infuriated that he's cussing out the uncooperative musicians.

Heh. Pretty sneaky of Wynton here. While NYPO and Alan Gilbert are both first rate, we in NE have our own BSO and a newly appointed "wunderkind" conductor Andris Nelsons, who like Brady, also has a hot wife.
