I think BB needs to extend Edelman before he decides to test the market because after that there will be a lot of good offers for him.

He proved that can be a realiable player and more than that, he's a true Patriot, I take for his posts on Facebook that he really enjoy to play on this team, so we may get a good deal.

He's a playmaker, great punt returner, can play on the slot or outside, running plays, played defense when asked to. Apparently everybody likes him around. I mean this is kind of a priority here, in my point of view, more than Talib's.

I'm a little head scratching that this may go longer on the off season with all the salary cap issues, Amendola getting better, rookies developing..

Unfortunately Edelman will probably want to get paid better than Amendola because, rightly so, he is better. It is fortunate for the Edelman family but unfortunate for Pats fans.

I think they will come to terms in the exclusive free agency period but not in season so I'm not sure if that's called an extension or resigning

Edelman goes unrecognized for the fact he is a tenured veteran by this teams current standards.

He seems like a good guy who enjoys being here, on Sunday I noticed he went over and gave Gronkowski a football hug right before the cart pulled away, that is the type of stuff that goes a long way to the character and unity of a team.

Edelman is this era's Troy Brown who does what the team needs him to do and developed from a relative unknown into a star quality player over the course of his career.

Well, if that's what he wants, I don't think he's going to find any suitors. When the best slot receiver of all time can't get more than $6M/year, Edelman's not going to get more than that.

On a more practical note, the Patriots structured Amendola's deal as a "mini" two-year deal within a larger five-year deal. I could see the Pats signing Edelman to a deal that's designed to take advantage of that fact (e.g., a decent signing bonus + large salaries on the back end) to minimize his 2014 cap hit.

Edelman isn't getting 30 mill next contract. He might get more than 10 guaranteed. but its a 3 or 4 year deal max, probably averaging 4 or 5 mill per year.

I cant see minitron choosing to stay next year. we have an abundance of young talent at WR, even if we cut amendola that still leaves us with 3 WR sets of Dobson, Thompkins, and Boyce. We need to put extra money on the Oline, D line, and bring in a CB/Safety to replace Gregory, Talib(should he seek a huge contract)

Add to that the very real need for a tight end.

I think we are all set on WR but not much more than that. One player goes down and you start to take a look at the depth chart. Actually this season I think we had at least 1 WR banged up every week, this depth is what is making things going on. WR's get beaten up all the time, they dive all the time, there are muscles injuries more than other positions...they run a lot and get tired for that, you need to have a decent rotation and players that can actually make catches not special teamers playing receiver.

After losing Welker we can't lose Edelman. If it's him or Amendola playing the slot, or both, that's a need. Brady needs his go to guy on the slot.

I drove the bus for Edelman for 3 years. However I NEVER said he was anything more than a solid NFL WR and an elite PR. I think the Pats would be happy to sign him to a 4 year contract in the $2.5-3MM range with some incentives for snaps and production. Unfortunately he's likely going to be looking in the 4-5MM range, and with this season's production and the Patriot's cachet, he might get it.

I think it would be a mistake for him though. He has one year of solid production, and one year of good health. I think he's in line to become one of those try hard players that New Englander's love to latch on to. His long term economic gains by staying here would far outweigh any short term gains he would make elsewhere. Being Brady's Minitron could become a brand.

Besides, with the 3 rookies plus DA under contract, plus BB's well know belief (and mine) that WR's are the most easily replaceable position in the league, he isn't going to be negotiating from a position of strength.

But regardless of what happens next year, the important thing is that Edelman has proved me correct. And as we all know here, that's what REALLY matters

Amendola got $5 million a year. Between his WR production and his PR production, I can see at least one team that would pay Edelperson north of $5 million. The Raiders for instance have tons of cap space.

We on the other hand have very little cap space. We are going to have to make choices and there is no way we can sign a $5 million Edelperson...ain't going to happen.

If I had to guess....Edelperson and Spikes, bye bye for sure unless they were willing to take a sub market deal (which I am sure they won't take). The Patriots are relatively deep at wide receiver (Amedola, Dobson, Thompkins, Boyce, Slater) plus we have Moe and Harrison coming back next year....that's 7 wide receivers without a single new additon. On the linebacker side, again decent depth.....not a priority to keep Spikes.

Plus if Edelperson leaves and we don't replace him with another high end free agent, we could be looking at a 4th or 5th round compensatory pick.

Also, Wilfork's cap hit needs to be drastically reduced either by cutting him or reworking a deal with greatly reduced compensation.

We need to resign Talib to a reasonable contract factoring in his injury concerns or a Talib-like CB in free agency.

Why would Edelman accept an extension he believes to be below market value? If the Patriots want to keep him, or any other player they have to pay market value.

He won't lol. Next year he's 28 years old.....prime of his career. If he is even reasonably intelligent he will take the Benjamins.

Two thoughts:

(1) As a reminder, you might want to go back and look at the discussions on this board re: expectations for Welker's next deal versus what actually happened.

(2) Unless Edelman has changed agents recently, he's repped by Don Yee—Tom Brady's agent. Obviously doesn't guarantee anything, but I doubt it can hurt the Pats' chances.

Edelman cannot be extended this year. You can only renegotiate your contract once a season.

I could be wrong but I dont believe this is accurate. They cant change the way this year is structured but I beleive they could add years. But it would have to be really worth for Edelman to take it at this point so close to unrestricted free agency.

Whether he gets it or not you have to think that the Amendola deal is a starting point as he is doing everything we paid Amendola to do as well as PRing. I think he could make a case for being worth more but their would need to be another suitor willing to go there and I think the Patriots could argue he is not quite the same talent that DA is. IMO they are close in talent with Amendola being a little better and more explosive but Edelman is the better STer, and they both have their health issues though Amendola seemingly has the lead there in the bad way.

I hope we find a way to keep him.

I actually made that mistake once myself.

What the CBA actually prohibits is multiple renegotiations that "raise a player's salary during the original terms" of the contract.

Edelman's renegotiation did not do that; it just converted some of the workout bonus to a roster bonus.

The more important point is that his contract was NOT a vet-minimum contract (b/c of the $250K bonus he's earned), so he can be signed to a long-term deal before free agency starts.

It's pretty late in a season to do an extension excepting for unheralded guys that don't really expect one. Edelperson is in a different category and he'll likely opt to test FA to determine the market for his services, as I think he should for his personal welfare. My take is that if it's not too high, he'll except a less guaranteed money offer to stay with the GOAT tossing the football. YMMV.

That's not 100% true or guaranteed in any way. One only needs to look at our HOF QB to know that exceptions can apply. Many Patriots have taken below-market deals to stay with the team over the years as well.

Do I think it's likely we will have to pay market value? Yes, I do think so. Can you be so totally sure about it? No, you can't.

My wish list:

1. Sign Edelman for 4 - 4.5M a year
2. trade up and draft one of the stud WRs this year. I would love to see a draft a physical WR like Mike Evans. We can't replace Gronk and Aaron with any player
3. Sign Jared Allen (after he gets released). Hopefully he takes less money.
4. Re-sign Talib
5. Draft an O-Lineman in round 2
