Interesting notes on Manning in extreme cold weather games - He is not very good at winning in them sporting a losing record thus far.

Peyton Manning plays lousy in cold weather! Myth or Fact? - Mile High Report

Temperatures sunday night at game time is expected to be around 21 degrees which would make it one of the coldest games Manning has played in.

Something positive to think about and not the mismatches we think there will be.

It won't matter if guys are wide open. The amount of separation carolina's receivers had against us will get us torched. If we can come in with a healthy secondary that's ready to play, we'll be in the game. If not we'll be forced into a situation where every drive in the 2nd half is a must score. I hope we see some Jamie Collins action as he's probably the best matchup against Julius Thomas. Chandler/Nink will have to win and win fast as well, something they really haven't done all season.

I think the wind will be a bigger issue for him (assuming there is a wind). His intermediate and deep passes are very wobbly. They aren't tight spirals like Brady's. Manning throw passes that can definitely get the wind under them and blow off course.

I would much rather have a windier night on Sunday than a cold one even though Manning's record sucks in the cold.

I think there will be a difference between the two games. The Pats' front four on Monday night played a lot of contain. They didn't rush Newton all that much early because they feared what he could do if they let him get out of the pocket (and we saw they were right).

The Colts, Chargers, and Redskins had a lot of success (at least for long stretches) putting pressure on Manning. I expect to see the Pats trying to go after Manning more. I also expect to see Chandler Jones lining up inside a lot to give pressure up the middle.

Luckily, I believe it's supposed to be both.

hes 10-11 based on that article.

50/50, aka average, aka not horrible.

If we could at least generate a DECENT pass rush, it would help make up for our terribly injured backfield. But no, we can't even do that.

Rob - I was asking for Jones to kick inside on pass downs all offseason...but after seeing him there so far this year, I have to backtrack. He has not been as effective inside, and I'm surprised the team continues to move him in there. He gets swallowed up at times. His best moves are on the edge.

In terms of pass rush, anything they get is gravy. I'm subscribing to AndyJohnson's plan of disrupting routes and timing. I add to that really flooding the middle of the field with defenders, and dropping LBs and even Ninko/Jones into coverage to curb those quick screens, quick slants, etc.

Manning's rhythm recently has been getting passes off in <2 sec. Quick passes, quick pick plays (legal and otherwise), stuff that's brutal to defend. If the Patriots had a healthy slew of DBs, they might be able to handle that stuff in man. They don't. It's disappointing - as I was really looking forward to seeing what Belichick could throw against Peyton with our top 5 DBs healthy. Instead, four of them are banged up.

But, as it is, they need to rely on throwing Manning off his game by screwing up the timing, getting into his throwing lanes, and forcing him outside and over the top.

And as you say, bring on the wind.

He is 2-5 below 30 degrees. 30-40 is nothing like 18 and windy.

Umm, Jones has been DOMINANT from inside

Our pass rush has been above average even in the most critical of judgments.

Did you see this past week? He caused a sack by Ninkovich where Jones rushed up the middle and forced Newton to avoid the sack and stepped right into Ninkovich.

Also, he has gotten several of his sacks rushing up the middle. He has been dominant at times up the middle.

Also, Manning has been getting killed by the rush lately. Not this past week, but Manning has been sacked 13 times this season and 8 of them were in a three game stretch against the Colts, Chargers, and Redskins. Manning is getting pressured and hit a lot in recent weeks. The Colts were in his face for the entire first half and had to back off later in the game due to injuries in secondary. The Chargers got to him a lot too. Manning right now can be pressured especially up the middle.

Over the past month, the Pats have had a pretty good pass rush. They played a lot of contain last week which slowed down the pass rush a lot, but they were all over Roethlisberger (sacked 5 times and hit and pressured a bunch more), Tannehill (sacked 6 times), and Geno Smith (sacked 4 times) the previous three week.

Prior to this past week where they had (3 sacks), they had 13 sacks over three game stretch. That is an average of 4.3 sacks a game. If they had that average over a 16 game stretch, it would be 69 sacks for the season which would have beaten the best defense in terms of sack last year (Denver) by 17 sacks.

Let's not act like the Pats are not putting pressure on the opposing QB. This past week, they faced a scrambling QB where Patricia and Belichick almost always chooses contain over blitzing and stronger pass rushes. But prior to that, the Pats were getting to opposing QBs more than most teams at over the past month.

Jaworksi came out with that 2.17 seconds to release the ball number, and it gets totally misinterpretted. When you catch it the gun and immediately throw a 2 yard pass or screen on 1/3 of your plays, it siginificantly reduces the average of how long you hold the ball.

The Pats have 13 sacks in three games (16 sacks in four games) and the guy is saying the Pats don't have a decent pass rush?

You are right. That is part of the reason the Chiefs didn't get to him. He styed in the gun all night because they wanted to protect him from injury with a weak o-line.

That is why I think our game plan will be to beat the crap out of his receivers, disrupt the timing and take away the short passes. Make him throw it down the field, IF he can get enough time to.

One thought though.

If that is the best way to attack them and you are BB do you do it now or keep it in your back pocket in case you meet them in January? I think thats a big question.

Not sure what you've been seeing, but Jones has been very good at DT. In this game, I would line him up at DT and put Ninkovich and Buchanan at DE. Buchanan takes very wide angles in rushing the passer and sometimes rushes too far upfield, but that won't hurt him against Manning the way it would a mobile quarterback like Geno Smith or Newton.

Obviously I have no way to back this up, but OTOH most of his damage has come on the edge. If I am mistaken, then I am happily mistaken, b/c he has more value to us if he can rush from the interior. But whenever I look, he's been better on the outside.
