2014 Free Agent – Arthur Jones

Why would they not keep Kelly?

I hope they do but age, injury, 3m cap hit and a strong DT class in the draft are all reasons that they might not.

Them resurrect Deacon Jones to play the other end!

Arthur would be a good signing.

Vince will be back and there is nobody better than him!

Micheal Johnson is most likely going to be a big contract whereas Arthur Jones is more likely to be in a range the Patriots are willing to pay, and Johnson plays DE where the Patriots are young and have their starters, I doubt they go that route and think Jones makes much more sense. With Chandler Jones and Ninkovich set as starters and Buchanon as a back-up all they need to do is draft another DE prospect to back up the starters and develop, whereas signing the DT in free agancy sets them at DT and means they don't have to use a high pick for a starter. I think Kelly could still start but getting a starter in free agency that allows he and Wilfork to rotate would be the best use of their resources. It may also have the side effect of influencing the contract negotiations for Chandler jones when his deal comes due in a couple of years. I am guessing he will love playing beside his brither and wouldn't want to walk away from that for the cash.

I'd like to kick the tires on alan branch, linval joseph, and cam thomas

need to solidify the interior

It would be pretty cool to have a starting defensive line named Jones. I am sure that this is one of the key criteria the Patriots use in their evaluation.

Jones is great and you can never have too many good lineman.

Wilfork's cap hit is about 11M. 7.5M of that is salary. I think he's a goner at that price. Especially with a bad Achilles.

Kelley is a relative bargain if he's healthy.

He's pretty solid against the run. He has a good motor and seems like a good character guy. He'll cost a lot, but you need to invest in the D-Line. Hopefully we can also draft the ND nose tackle

I agree with the Wilfork part, but disagree with the Kelly part in that he will most likely
not want to play here without Wilfork, but if he has to (because no other team will pay him),
then he will either suck or injure himself again.
