2013 NFL Standings, Team & Offensive Statistics - Pro-Football-Reference.com

Statistically, the Jets stack up pretty evenly with the Patriots, but they're #1 in defensive penalties for opponents' first downs and they turn the ball over twice as much as the Patriots.

I hope that the defense can keep up the excellent play of late again this week.

(Please don't merge this with the Jets suck thread.)

The Jets have been inconsistent, with each win followed by a loss. To me that is a hallmark of a mentally soft team, that doesn't know how to handle either success nor adversity.

For the most part their defense has played very well, but they're not forcing any turnovers (just 3; only the Steelers have fewer); meanwhile their offense has continued to give the ball away far too often (4th most in the league). The inability to create any turnovers has killed the Steelers the last few years, and is doing the same to the Jets and Texans this year.

Considering that the Jets have a -11 turnover differential, it's amazing that they are 3-3. That may be more of a statement to how Tampa Bay, Buffalo and Atlanta played in those three Jet victories than anything else.

Game One
Turnovers: 2 (opponent: 2)
Penalties/Yards: 6/45 (opp: 13/102)
Result: 1-point victory

Game Two
Turnovers: 4 (opponent: 0)
Penalties/Yards: 8/66 (opp: 3/30)
Result: 3-point loss

Game Three
Turnovers: 2 (opponent: 0)
Penalties/Yards: 20/168 (opp: 7/87)
Result: 7-point victory

Game Four
Turnovers: 4 (opponent: 0)
Penalties/Yards: 10/66 (opp: 4/30)
Result: 25-point loss

Game Five
Turnovers: 0 (opponent: 1)
Penalties/Yards: 6/24 (opp: 4/46)
Result: 2-point victory

Game Six
Turnovers: 2 (opponent: 0)
Penalties/Yards: 5/60 (opp: 7/49)
Result: 2-point victory

Totals
Turnovers: 14 (opponent: 3)
Penalties/Yards: 55/429 (opponent: 38/344)

14 Giveaways: 29th
3 Takeaways: Tied for 29th
-11 Turnover Differential: 30th
9.2 Penalties per Game: 32nd
72 Penalty Yards per Game: 30th

The one downside of course is that if they ever get the turnover problem fixed, they might have a decent team.

My key is Brady´s pass protection!

I don´t expect a good running game.
Jets front 7 are very good against the run.

Wilkerson and Rookie Richardson play a heck of a saison.

Our Oline have to make a big step up, or Brady is the next, who lands on IR.
From my POV, Vollmer was the only, who was performing on his own standard. Every else was subpar.

Jets backfield is really bad, even Cromartie( maybe the next woman is pregnant) is out of shape.

I saw a bit of the pats/saints game again yesterday. Cannon was really bad. There were times when brady clearly called the blitz and set the protection and the oline was still overwhelmed. Extremely worried about our oline vs this jets dline which might be as good as the bengals dline.

IT's going to be hilarious when the team leading the league in penalties gets a few called on them Sunday and Jets Insider blows up with a conspiracy thread.

Their defensive line is a huge concern with the way our line has blocked recently.

Cannon will have a full week of working with the starters, which should help him with the mental part of the game.

They really should be 2-4. The penalty that moved them into field goal range to beat Tampa Bay was an error by the refs.

A freeze frame from the initiation of contact on the 'late' hit.

Amazing--I kept thinking--why to hell aren't the Bucs contesting this stupid call?? Why weren't they? Why didn't the team?? Why didn't the player?? You could plainly see that Smith was inbounds when shoved out. And yet on the most hellish possible miscall possible, no one argued, or at least if they did, the camera people were part of a conspiracy of silence.

And how do the refs even make a call like this when it is at least way too close to call on the last play of the game. Can you imagine if some sh.t like this was called in a basketball game.

I thot i was all alone in this till you posted this.

Running the ball effectively, controlling the clock and playing good defense are the keys to the game IMO.

some views from the other side

Green Lantern: Will The Real Jets Of New Jersey Please Stand Up? « CBS New York
If that’s not the case or an overreaction, then the Jets better show something Sunday, because I’ve seen them lose to the Patriots with supposedly strong teams, veteran-laden teams, very young teams and short-on-talent teams.

Don’t let the Patriots fool you. They are not the team you are used to seeing dominating the AFC. I’d be shocked if they go far in the playoffs with that running game, especially if the Rob Gronkowski and Danny Amendola injury sagas continue. Their defense is ranked 14th overall in the league, including a rather woeful 24th against the run. It’s a defense that also will be without mammoth tackle Vince Wilfork, linebacker Jerod Mayo and possibly corner Aqib Talib on Sunday.

What more could Ryan’s team possibly want?

Silverman: Crucial 3-Game Stretch Will Almost Certainly Define Jets? Season « CBS New York

Of the three opponents, the Patriots appear to be the most beatable because they simply don’t have the offensive weapons that Patriots teams have had in the past. They are also missing nose tackle Vince Wilfork (Achilles tendon) and inside linebacker Jerod Mayo (torn pectoral muscle), their two best defensive players.

But the Patriots are a 5-1 team and they are coming off a home victory over the Saints. Tom Brady threw a game-winning touchdown pass to Kenbrell Thompkins with five seconds remaining, and the Pats stole a victory they deserved and played their best game of the season in the process.

This is a game that the Jets must win if they are going to survive their three-game gauntlet prior to their bye week.

...

But the Pats are vulnerable. They have made great strides on defense since the midway point of last season, but the losses of Wilfork and Mayo should open them up against the run. If Bilal Powell runs with a purpose and gets just a little bit of blocking, he should be able to gash the Patriots’ front seven.

If the running game gets going, Bill Belichick will have to make several adjustments to his defense and that could allow Smith to hit open receivers.

That’s just what the rookie quarterback needs. He has shown the ability to connect with open receivers for big plays, but he can’t fit the ball into a tight window at this point in his development.

Opportunities will not be plentiful against the Patriots, and it will be up to the Jets’ fourth-ranked defense to shut down Brady and Co. The Pats are not going to string drive after drive together, but the test for the Jets’ defense will come at the end of the game if the Pats need a field goal to tie or a touchdown to win.

That’s when it’s toughest to stop Brady. That’s no newsflash, but Brady did it once again against the Saints and he will be hungry for another opportunity against the Jets.

Jets are 15th in points allowed and Patriots are 4th.
That is the most telling stat.

It's interesting that in those articles (especially the second one) that the author uses stats of lesser significance (rush defense) as evidence that the Jets can/will win, while completely ignoring the elephant in the room: turnovers.

Other than points scored and points allowed, is there a more critical statistic in the game of football then turnovers? Giveaways and takeaways have a far greater correlation (and causation) to the outcome of football games than a stat such as rushing yardage. If that was such a huge factor, then why isn't the team ranked first in rushing defense 6-0?

To not even mention turnovers once, or the fact that the Patriots are allowing more than six fewer points per game than the Jets are even once somewhere in either article is absurd.
