I hate to ever give the CHB any points, but, for once, he has something approximating one:
Dan Shaughnessy ? @Dan_Shaughnessy
Today 1st time Pats voluntarily took ball at start since 2008 Brady injury game. And look what happens. Need to go back to defer

A lot of people, myself included, were shocked at that. Very uncharacteristic of the Patriots. But, as others have said, the weather probably factored into that for all we know.
Deferring, in football logic, usually gives the team an extra possession. (And if fate is in your favor, sometimes back-to-back possessions that can be used to go ahead by 2-3 scores if you're really rolling and depending how game went so far.)
My GUESS is the Patriots expected the weather to get bad during the game, and so wanted to handle the opening kickoff as opposed to one and a possession that might occur during rain.
EDIT: Halifax_Pats_Fan beat me to it. Missed the post until the refresh.
I believe that we had lost the toss in all 4 games prior to today also, just for whatever it's worth---unless there's a game out of the first 4 that I am forgetting.
Then finally when we actually win the toss like today, we have to choose to get the ball first due to weather. Whatever...
