Pats Eye Welker (Reiss)

This would be great. Guys, he's only 25 years old. Of course he's worth a second rounder, especially since we have two firsts. I'd be pretty happy to have him on the team, personally.

I've never had a post change my mind so quickly. I now want this deal to occur when forty-five seconds ago I didn't. Good post.

I agree; I was on the fence before, but after reading these posts and Welker's stats, I'm thinking he's worth the #60 pick.

Same here. But a 2nd rounder? With Chambers and Booker ahead of him, Welker has never been the "go-to guy" before and that is an awful lot to give up for a mostly career backup. I'm not sure if Welker is that much of an improvement over Caldwell and Gaffney. Also I don't think Welker has near as much potential as, let's say, an Anthony Gonzalez, or a Jason Hill, or an Aundrae Allison, etc.

Guys like Allison and Gonzalez won't be around at #60. Jason Hill might be available, but who knows after his combine performance. Welker gives you someone who can step in now. Anyone they draft (outside of Calvin Johnson) will need time to develop. They can grab someone to develop later on. This receiver class is ridiculously deep. Stanley, McKnight, L. Robinson, Higgins, Cornelius, Clowney, Stuckey...

67 catches last year for a guy who's only 25? If Welker was black, he'd be considered the next big thing.

If anything I think the fact that he's white works for him. He's considered more unusual.

You sound like a moron.

Right. I mean, the fact that he was being compared to Tim Dwight, which is like comparing Troy Brown to Andre Davis... you figure it out.

well somebody was bound to say it.

I think some people agree with this but won't admit to it.

Figured I'd get some controversy started. Can't let you have all the fun there, Keegs.

From PFT

If the Pats don't use the poison pill, and if the Fins match the deal, look for the NFLPA to cry foul. Why? Because there was a specific effort by the league and the union to negotiate the poison pill out of the CBA after last year's tit-for-tat involving the Vikings and the Seahawks. But an impasse was reached, and the device is still on the books.

Thanks for reference to clear that point up.

That's because most people understand that they should keep moronic racist statements to themselves.

Anyway, I'd give a pass to the original poster--maybe he didn't intend it to come out the way it did-- but this kind race-based thinking is really sad.

Welker makes Troy Brown look like Charlie Brown... sign him up asap...

He is Troy Brown's replacement... plus some...

Gonzalez won't but Allison may slip there. Do we still draft WR high if we get Welker? 60 can also be used on LB, CB, S, while we can draft WR at 24 or 28. Welker limits our options, but if he's worth it then go ahead.

I am so sure that BB & SP has all angles cover on this...I think teams going to realize don't piss off BB.....This make sense it is like no brainer....AWESOME FA SEASON FOR '07.....:singing: :rocker:

Welker doesn't necessarily limit the Pats options. Why? Because Chad Jackson's status is up in the air. I do agree that a higher round pick is guaranteed a spot on the roster, but remember the Pats also have Kelvin Kight and Bam Childress on the roster and they could be cut. I think that Childress is out of options, but Kight still has one 1 year PS eligibility.

I'm not under the impression that this is anything special as a draft.

I agree. There is good depth in this draft at WR, however. Anthony Gonzalez or Jason Hill might be good options with the Pat's 2nd rounder. The upside to this deal is that Welker would be able to contribute immediately next season and help strengthen special teams. With two number 1 picks and possibly two number 3s (Givens comp pick?) the Pats can easily afford to part with a number 2.

Having two first round picks is what enables you to spend a 2nd rounder on Welker. They have the flexability to move down from 24 or 28 to recoup picks. I don't envision any of the available receivers in the draft (outside of Calvin Johnson) being able to have the impact Welker would have this coming season. Welker allows them to focus on drafting LBs and DBs early. They can grab a WR to develop later on...

I've been on THIS bandwagon very early in several posts. I'm happy to see BB agree with me...on this one (though I hope he gets back to me before he signs Sammy Morris to anything but a vet minimum deal.) All the positives Welker brings have been well documented in the thread. What I DON'T understand are those nay sayers.

First, while seemingly a real NEED position, WR WAS NOT the reason we didn't get to the superbowl, and even if we stayed pat, don't you think that a full off season of work in the system wouldn't improve Gaffney and Caldwell.

Second, its become fashionable to speculate of the absolute neccessity to have a WR who can SPREAD THE FIELD. WHY?? Was our offense in the bottom ten last year? Was Brady limited to UNDER 3000 yds. Hey if we need someone to "spread the field" just resign Bethel, he was good a clearing out zones.
There is really only one guy we could get that would dramatically "improve" our WR corp merely by being on the team is Randy Moss (BTW, I'd give up a 2nd for him too, ) The Curtis', Stallworth's, & Bennett's of the world would also be nice, but they'd cost much more in cap space, be a lot less versitile, a lot less durable, and STILL have just as many questions about them as Welker...if not more.

Nice post. I haven't read the 1.3 million posts concerning this, so this has probably already been said. 25 years old. Caught 67 passes in MIAMI last year. Think of who was throwing to him. Good route runner. good hands. Lots of upside. Proven he can play at this level. If you had a rookie coming in with the second round pick with the potential that this kid has proven ability for, anyone on this board would be stoked. Its a no brainer, as long as the cap money is right.

Sign him up!

Big LB
Blocking TE
effective WR
journeyman RB
Asante tagged
everyone on the line re-signed

And we still have the draft....WOW!!!!
