I have to admit, I just don't get it.

Mike Reiss @MikeReiss
Promotions of Kanorris Davis (safety) & Ja'Gared Davis (linebacker) seem to be mostly tied to special-teams considerations.

I take it as Wilfork is irreplaceable, so a depth body can be added at any point. But Slater's role/void needs to be filled and that can actually be done.

Is that 6 undrafted rookies on the 53 right now?

I could be wrong, but I believe the patriots have never won in cincinnati playing 6 or more undrafted free agents. History is not on our side...

Not in the rain they haven't ...

The Bengals' special teams coverage units are several notches below the Patriots'.

That's an area I expect the team to be aggressive in, and these signings may lead to that. Special teams play could be the deciding factor in this one. Cincinnati looks weak in that department.

Ebner is no longer on the Injured list (did have "limited" practice though). I have no idea whether or not he plays. Slater was moved to doubtful. I read this in a location I can't remember (NFL link below though).

Its looking like ...possibly more ...of a 3-4 defense.....as I would have thought they would have brought another DT up....with the loss of wilfork

Unless you are thinking that maybe he would've recovered the on-sides kick in Atlanta,
there so far has been no Slater void to fill.

JAG Davis instead of Forston/Francis makes no sense whatsoever. Expect Bernard & LawFirm
to have a big day vs what passes for our DLine.

Heh... Nice stat, don't think it'll have much bearing tho. Unless I'm missing some sarcasm.

I know Teddy B made a point of using a 3-4 alignment with Spikes as a down linemen for run support this week in the wake of the Achilles' injury, but 3-4 defenses generally have a lot of big bodies on the D-Line. The Patriots lacked the personnel to pull it off consistently with Wilfork. Why would they attempt to do it now without him?

I think the personnel was better suited for the 4-3 with Wilfork, and definitely now it is, without him for the time being.

How can we run a 3-4 with exactly zero nose tackles on the roster?

Our backup linebackers are all worn out from overuse.

Lots of good sarcasm in this thread. Keep it rollin'!

Actually, it looks the exact opposite.

No, it just means that the expect to play a lot of sub, which means that they'll only have one true DT on the field for a good portion of the snaps.

Yes, the presence of Marcus Forston or AJ Francis would surely be the difference between Green-Ellis and Bernard having a "big" day and them being shut down.

#Patriots signed LB Ja'Gared Davis & S Kanorris Davis off practice squad. Hightower and Mayo both Questionable

Hopefully nothing to this.

As long as Ninkovich is healthy, roster headcounts say almost nothing about the choice between 3-4 and 4-3. He's an LB in the 3-4 and a DE in the 3-4, so either way the Front 7 are 3 pure DL, 3 pure LBs, and Ninkovich.

Are you sure? Last week we saw a pretty decent kickoff return, plus a punt that bounced into the endzone without any Patriot nearby to down it, plus Edelman didn't attempt any returns.

Nothing new with Mayo, but Hightower is new this week.
