Armond Armstead

I believe that it is relevant that Armstead has had no preseason, no practice and no NFL reps.
We will question even whether Gronk will be 100% when he comes back. I think it naive to think that Armstead will just come in and play, being as effective as if he has a full preseason, and had practiced and played in the first first half of the season.

Exactly. Even the best of the best take a while to "get back into it" after missing training camp and preseason.

Who said he would be as effective as that? To get on the field, all he needs to be is more productive than Vellano and Jones. For a guy with Armstead's pedigree, that shouldn't be a stretch.

Just in the last handful of years, we've seen NE bring rookies up from PUP or NFI with the expectation that they would contribute, Tate and Cannon come immediately to mind. Yes, Tate reinjured his knee, but it is clear that he was going to be at least a #3 option in 2009 had he stayed healthy.

Armstead going from NFI to rotational DT is hardly unheard of.

Your examples of rookies Cannon and Tate are appropriate. We agree that it is possible that Armstead will contribute. BTW, Armstead could have other roles than the primary backup for Vollmer and Wilfork (Vellano's role). We could have both Vellano and Armstead active. For example, Armstead could be active instead of Bequette. He could be a sub package DT, or the backup to Chandler Jones in that role.

In any case, I expect him to be in practice as soon as is allowed. There is little downside. Armstead should be an upgrade to Chris Jones and a more valuable asset on the 53 than Beauharnais or Jones.

So is someone on the Non Football Injury List allowed to return during the season?

2 months ago he had surgery. It's not like he broke or tore something. So any idea when he could be healthy?

Well it's still 3 weeks out before he is eligible to return so we won't really have an idea until then.

He can return after week 6.

Vince Wilfork’s season done; Rare injury will change face of ‘D’ | Jeff Howe | Boston Herald

Help on the way

The status of rookie defensive lineman Armond Armstead will continue to come into focus in the wake of Wilfork’s injury. Armstead is on the non-football illness list because of an infection that was discovered during the offseason, and he is eligible to return to practice as early as Week 7.

It’s still unclear if Armstead will be ready that early, but there is optimism regarding his progress, and the belief exists that he will be able to contribute in 2013.

Armstead can’t play on the nose like Wilfork, but he would add depth on the interior in either defensive front.

Your sig is hilarious!

Is an achilles tear really considered rare? Suggs had it. Testaverde had it (ok that's going back awhile but still) I'm sure there are many others.

Are we positive Wilfork is out for the year? I know it's probable but since he's had his surgery we should know for sure by now.

This is indeed a crazy world.

A player is injured on Sunday night. And on Tuesday, folks are insisting that we should know FOR SURE whether he will be out for the year.

???????

Hard to see a guy as big as Vince coming back this year. Reports are that he's done. Not on IR yet, though.

A) no one is INSISTING on anything

B) Doctors have a pretty good idea how long it will take for a 400 pound man to recover well enough from an achilles tear to determine right away if it's possible he can play again in two/three months.

C) why the qestion marks, are you confused? It's pretty simple actually.

You said that we should know for sure about the results of an injury that happened. I disagreed. I don't think the "WE" should know, or have any right to know, anything a day and a half after the injury.

It is indeed very simple.

Ha ha. I used to round up for the 6'5" Ted Washington, but at 6'1" there's no way Vince is near that 350 maybe.

It really is hilarious!
Gotta give it up for Aqib and that body language that clearly says "Bring me your best! He isn't anything to me!". And he walked that talk.

Oh to keep it on subject, Armstead, a DL machine waiting to break out and terrorize the opposition OL/rungame/QB starting week 7 like Godzilla going off on Tokyo!

Reiss was on the radio just now and said he can start practicing after the Saints game and that the team has a clear plan in place to see what he can contribute this season once he starts practicing. He was said he has been attending all the meetings which is a good sign.
