The Official Julian Edelman Crow Eating Thread

I've always been a huge fan of this kid and my gosh, I hope he stays. He's tough and talented.

I've been one of Edlepersons biggest defenders from day one. I never, ever understood the hate. Thankfully he stayed around. Very durable.

The more Edelman plays in our Offense is the more and more he's looks alot like Welker. That hesitation move he juke out the Defender with gave him an additioinal 40 yards. Seriously I think Edelman is a poor mans Wes Welker in the making. I really love his upside as a Receiver.

Which is on pace for 136 receptions and 1280 yards.

Do those numbers remind you of anyone? I for one was completely wrong about the guy. He is a heck of a receiver.

If he is able to stay healthy and play all 16 and in turn come reach those numbers, i'll eat crow. But not yet.

I've been a supporter of his since Day 1, I thought his talent was obvious, he just needed the reps to begin honing that talent.

Julian is nowhere near as good as Wes and never will be. But at 1/7 the cost, it is easy to see why the team was OK moving on.

Personally, I never questioned his ability as a receiver. What I, and many others questioned, was his durability as a receiver. When he's played in the past, he's been productive. The problem is, when he's played in the past, he's gotten hurt. The same applies to Amendola. Great when he's on the field, but can't seem to stay on it. So far Amendola has already gone down, and I wonder if Edleman isn't going to any week now. I hope not.

Re sign the beast!

Can someone cue up the thread from last fall? If people are eating crow, I get to serve it.

Why is he "nowhere as good"? Based on past performance, I agree with you, but what does Wes do that at this point that is so special? He gets open and catches 5 yard passes from the slot. Do you think Edelman would have any trouble doing the exact same thing if he were on the Broncos? The mandate against Denver will always be stopping Thomas and Decker from beating you deep. Any competent slot guy would excel in that offense (Edelman, Davone Bess, Harry Douglass, Victor Cruz, etc etc)

You have to give it to Welker for his durability, but, ignoring the health issue, Edelman is just as reliable in the short game and certainly a bigger threat down the field than Wes is at this point in their careers.

Wes was nowhere as good as Wes before he came to NE either.

Shhhh. You're not supposed to bring that up.

No you di'n't!

Take a look at my avatar fellas. There is a reason why Wesley is wearing a Miami uniform in the real picture, because I coveted him since before NE made the trade. I even made several posts on this very website before 99% of the people here had even heard of him that I would be fine trading a 2nd rounder for him. Walking into the 2006 Miami game, I joked with my friend that I was going to get a special order jersey with Welker on the back in the hopes that NE would made the deal.

Needless to say, there is no one here who can play any Welker card over me, particularly those that involve who he was before arriving in NE.

Julian isn't as good as Wes. And he won't ever be what Welker was from 2007-2011. He just won't. But that is OK, because he is a fine player in his own right.

The funny thing is, I've been one of Edelman's most ardent supporters, holding ground under a bevy of blows whenever his detractors start shaking their fists.

It might help to understand the full picture before giving someone too hard of a time. Just sayin'.

Looks like he won't be coming back next year

Looks like you caught yourself a little. No one is saying Edelman is currently as good as Welker was in his absolute prime. But, I think if you just trust your eyes and ignore the names on the jerseys, you will see that Edelman's skill set AS OF RIGHT NOW compares favorably with Wes's AS OF RIGHT NOW.

I didn't catch myself because Wes right now is better than Edelman right now. Which, again, is fine.

JE doesn't have to be as good as Wes. Right now he is putting up Wes type numbers at 1/7th the price and is helping this team win games which is all we can ask for. We don't need Wes to win a SB that has been proven already. The big question going forward is whether or not the Pats keep him because if he continues at this pace, his market value will soar.

I submit that your opinion is based more on Welker's reputation than his observable skill set. One does not have to be a master scout to see that Edelman is bigger, faster, and has better hands and body control to make difficult catches away from his body (the catch he made against the Jets on the sideline in the rain being the best example). But, I understand Wes is one of your favorite players.
