Who is Matthew Mulligan?

I remember the signing and remember the cutting, then the re-signing, but totally assumed he got cut again in some back-of-the-roster churn. Yet there he was extending Tom Brady's touchdown streak and giving us the early lead on the road, making me totally forget about Aaron whats-his-name-again?

Thank you for making that catch. It's nice to know we have one tight end who can hold onto the ball right now.

His TD reception was great. But a play or two before that on a running play he got totally owned by a Falcons DE, like he was a boy playing a man.

Could he be a liability in the running game?

Props to Mully, but in other news, I would really like to know what the fck is going on with Sudfeld. The guy went from being a baby Gronk, to a baby jacka$$

Mulligan actually had more snaps than Sudfeld, while Hoomanawanui is clearly the starting TE until Gronk returns. I would attribute that to the fact that Hoomanawanui and Mulligan are better blockers than receivers, while Sudfeld is considered to be the reverse.

ANALYSIS: Rookie tight end Zach Sudfeld was on for just eight snaps, as Michael Hoomanawanui was the primary tight end, even as the Patriots played a heavy percentage of three-receiver offense, which usually calls for more of a pass-catching tight end. ... Matthew Mulligan's 13 snaps were a season high with the Patriots.​

I am going to disagree with Reiss' analysis there. In an 11 formation there is less of a need to have a pass-catching tight end since you already have three options to throw the ball downfield to; instead, you want to have a blocking tight end to help out in pass protection.

Mulligan has been improving, Sudfeld has not.

We were down to Edelman, Thompkins and Boyce (who had zero catches in the first 3 games). And even then, Sudfeld was not even on the field very much. He certainly didn't get a lot of targets.

Maybe it is early to cut him. Being inactive when Gronk comes back seems like a fine idea.

I felt that way last night after seeing him flub the onside kick but after some consideration, that was a pretty bad hop.

And I still haven't forgotten the forum members who wanted to cut Gronk after a few fumbles in the Cleveland loss in 2010.

Well, I for one don't expect to see him on the Patriots roster by the end of the season, but I will root pretty hard for a fellow homey that never even played high school football. 100% homegrown, smalltown Mainer/ New England boy. Pretty good story.
