On 3rd down packages they are taking Wilfork off, moving Chandler Jones to DT, and bringing Buchanan in at DE.

How do you think Jones and Buchanan were on the field at the same time for that sandwich-sack-penalty in the Jets game.

I'm more surprised than anything.

Buchanan is playing well. Just disappointed in Collins development so far. I thought he would've been able to win that 3rd down pass rush spot. Like someone else said a few posts ago, it would be a tremendous waste of talent if they didn't even try Collins as a pass rusher.

They're actually taking Kelly off the field.

I'd like to see him in there on 3rd downs at least. Maybe used as a speciality rusher.

Michael Buchanan (7th rd pick) has already seen a lot more playing time than Jamie Collins.

1. Buchanan was a steal: his playing shows how good of a pick he was, not how bad Collins is.

2. Collins is changing positions . That doesn't happen overnight

Then why waste a valuable draft pick on someone who isn't going to contribute to the team while Brady's last years whittle away?

The thing you have to understand is Wilfork is the only reason we're able to use the 3 DE front, he lines up as the 1 technique and takes on the 2 offensive linemen allowing Ninkovich, Jones and Buchanan to match up 1on1.

Ninkovich - 1on1 vs. the RT
Wilfork - 1on2 vs. the RG and OC
Jones - 1on1 vs. the LG
Buchanan - 1on1 vs. the LT

If you pull Wilfork off you'd have to move Ninkovich or Buchanan inside and then the OC can choose who he will help which will most likely be the LG against Jones therefore taking away your advantage and your best pass rusher.

I hate to say it since i like Spikes, but i think they are preparing for a Collins Hightower Mayo linebacking corps. There's your coverage linebacker.

Right now though the scheme requires 1 big whether it is Wilfork, Kelly or even Vellano:

7Tech DE – Ninkovich | 1Tech DT – Wilfork/Kelly | 3Tech DT – Jones | 7Tech DE – Buchanan

I don’t think Buchanan, Ninkovich or Jones could play the 1Tech DT and command 2 OL, but maybe we could run a NASCAR like front:

9Tech DE – Ninkovich | 3Tech DT – Buchanan | 3Tech DT – Jones | 9Tech DE – Collins

Or they could play what I think would be the most effective front in you wanted to work Collins in to the mix, which is a 3-3-5:

7Tech DE – Ninkovich | 0Tech NT – Wilfork/Kelly | 7Tech DE – Jones

SOLB – Collins | MLB – Mayo | WOLB – Mayo

I think right now they’re just attempting to get Collins more comfortable with the NFL, and then they will begin to mix him in more with opportunities at the SAM and as the LEO for Ninkovich.
