The O will get it together, but how 'bout that DEFENSE?!

It is fair to ask if this is a meaningful indication of what will happen vs a top offense, but it is ignorant to diminish how well they played by asking that quesiton.

Not even the top defenses can stop the top offenses...so...yeah

I was heartened to see that Vellano looks like he may have potential.

Vince looks sick. I don't think he lost a step, but he's ill or injured.

i'm still not sold yet. we are opportunistic, but we always have been opportunistic. it sure looks better, but we played 2 lousy offenses so far.

i have to see us against good teams. atlanta will be a good test.

If we can hold Atlanta or the New Orleans to 21 put me down as a believer. Knowing they can drop 40 on just about anyone thats the measuring stick for me.

What would you consider acceptable against a good team? Atlanta's season low was 17 points last season and they were only held under 20 twice. Anything in that range would appear to be a great performance and anything under 25 should be considered solid.

Depends on what kind of 25pts though. is it a 25pts of struggle? or smooth 25 pts? if is 17-17 going into the 4th qtr while matt ryan looking beat up then i'll take that 25pts

It was not opportunistic, it was strong defense. The Jets had 5 drives in the last 17 1/2 minutes down 3, and got nothing. Their QB complete 43% of his passes. I don't care who he is 43% is good defense. Tebow completes more than that forchrissakes. We played good run D. We sacked Smith 4 times in 35 passes and hit hit 9 times.
We faced 15 drives. They scored on 2 of them. 9 had zero first downs, another had just one.
If you don't think that is dominating defense you don't know what dominating defense is.

That is really irrelevant to how the defense played in this game, and a true cop out.

The two offenses the Patriots have faced are not good, but I will take a good defensive performance. You got to be able to stop the bad teams as well as the good teams. Besides, defenses in the NFL have trouble stopping anybody. The Packers put up over 30 on the 49ers, the Broncos offense manhandled the Ravens, the Steelers defense got gashed by the Titans...Miami put up quite a bit of points on the Browns.....

Please, a little perspective...the NFL is an offensive league, anytime a team can keep the score under 20 it is a HUGE feat.

Despite the constant wailing here, I choose to look at the long term changes occurring on the Patriots.

It as been years since the team has had a complete Defense. It has taken four years to rebuild it from top to bottom when the older veterans retired.

Averaging but 12 PPG yielded, is not sustainable, but it is most satisfying after the long drought. The team is becoming more well rounded.

As for the Offense, it is a temporary problem of maturity, a "perfect storm", for some talented but immature receivers. In a week of two the starting receiving battery will be Gronk, Amendola, Edelman and then some youngster. That is a spectacular veteran receiving corps, and not needing several rookies to produce, instantly. They will eventually.

This looks to be the most sound Patriots team in the last half dozen years.:snob::snob:

i wish bill blitzes veteran qbs the way he does rookies.

There were a few blitzes, but the pressure was coming from winning 1v1 matchups and some nicely designed stunts. We got burned once on a blitz, and we were lucky to not get burned on a pass that came off of a Jets receiver's fingers on another blitz.

The pressure was solid, but there's room for improvement. The Jets are good in the trenches though. Their o-line is nothing to sneeze at.

Jets RBs carried the ball 29 times for 112 yards which is 3.9 a carry.
In what world is that bad run D?

Some of the Chicken Littles seem to WANT to find something to complain about, even if they have to manufacture it.

For example, an O-line that forced the Run for 158 yards, in the first game is suddenly inept, and beyond terrible. Especially when Rex was playing the run and short pass, and daring the long pass attempt.

In this game, a perfect storm, a combination of injured stars and immature rookie receivers, is suddenly a permanently poor receiving team.

What nonsense.

25 points is 25 points, but I see what you're saying. I'd say 25 points on 10+ drives while limiting the average TOP to 3 mins per drive would be a solid effort. I try to actively stay away from judging based on what I see because I have no clue what the intentions are on a given play and the rose colored glasses that have me expecting/hoping for the best during the off days has me thinking every 1st down allowed is the end of days on game day. Judging the results keeps me at least a slightly sane.

14 points last week and 10 points this week. 302ypg. So far, so good!

Atleast we don't have to play contain for awhile too.

The 129 rushing yards the Jets got last night would put them in the top 10 of the league if they maintained that pace all year. In my world, that's pretty bad run D.

Look, I'm happy we won, and I thought the D looked pretty decent overall. In today's NFL, teams are going to get their yards one way or another, so maybe this is as good as it gets. Or maybe BB schemed to allow some running yardage, knowing Mornhinweg's pass-pass-pass mentality. Who knows. I'm just saying we didn't defend the inside run very well last night. Time will tell if it's an anomaly or a recurring problem.

They got 129 yards, including QB scrambles, because we tied a team record for punts and managed 9 first downs on offense.
We held them to 3.9 per carry RB, that is good run defense.

Belichick was inviting the run. He knew the Jesters could not create scores from long ploding drives, and he and Matty Patricia were correct. They couldn't, as long as the rook did not gain lots of scramble/running yards and they played the D to prevent that.

You have to pick your spots though, a veteran QB can handle a blitz and burn you big time.
