Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot ed.

I guess I'm the lone member of the Wendell fan club. Oh well.

My one post game thought? I love Thompkins

Although I think you're wrong in your assessment of Wendell, you're probably right in your prediction. The team started him last year and slid Connolly over to RG. I hope that changes this year, because I'd love to see more strength along the interior. Mankins looks great, Wendell looks weak, and Svitek looked like trash.

I have a gut feeling that you're probably right and that Wendell will get exposed eventually, but since I'm now fully invested in my position as defender of all things Wendell I'm going to have to stick to my guns until that happens.

You're right on Mankins, though. He looks like he's back to his regular dominant self. Speaking of strength, I bet Cannon could be a hell of a road grader at RG.

Re: Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot e

Weird. Earlier in the preseason, I said if Cannon could show enough at RG that they should move Connolly back to center because I thought he was better than Wendell and people killed me for that. Especially, when you factor in the fact that the o-line was a mess in 2011 with both Vollmer and Mankins injured, I thought Connolly is a superior center.

You didn't get any argument out of me on that. The people that were killing you for it were the people obsessed with maintaining the status quo.

I don't dislike Wendell. I just like him more as a backup.

Wendell was excellent last year as the Center. I thought Connolly was our weak link last year at RG. Hopefully we replaced him with a better player in Cannon.

Re: Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot e

Dan Connolly will turn 31 before the season begins, and makes too much money to be a backup.

Ryan Wendell is in the final year of his contract and somebody will likely offer him more money than he is worth to the Patriots, similar to what happened with Donald Thomas this past spring.

Looking ahead to the 2014 season, Matt Stankiewitch could be the Patriots new starting center.

Re: Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot e

Adrian Wilson looked abysmal tonight.

I was shocked at how bad he was. Bad angles, soft in coverage and worst of all almost seemed to be avoiding contact at times.

Obviously way too early, but 2014 draft, Center and (another!) Safety?

Mccourty-will be in the final year of his deal in 2014.
Harmon-Has shown promise, our backup FS.

Gregory/Wilson/Wilson-The misfit JAGs. Very eerily similar to Ihedigbo/Chung/Brown....

Re: Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot e

Ok, it sounds like we all watched the same game. Most of my observations have been covered. I know it's pre-season, but I'd like to see the Patriots have more fight in them when a team gets chippy. Brady is super-competitive in practice. With Detroit smack-talking and late-hitting as a matter of course, I would have hoped the Pats' professional pride would have shown-up with some precision offense. Understood that they aren't breaking open the playbook, so some of those professional resources were destined to go unutilized, but I'd still like to see more attitude when things get tough.

Also I thought Tavon was fine tonight. I thought it was Harmon in the second have that was thoroughly struggling.

I agree in general. TWilson wasn't glaringly terrible and was one of the few sound tacklers on the 2nd team defense. Harmon was atrocious, watching plays, over-running plays, missing tackles, running into not one, but two kick returners, missing yet more tackles. I don't want to see him on the active regular season roster anytime soon.

I think [Arrington's] coverage has been pretty good this preseason. Won't be confused with Revis by any stretch, but for a #2 CB he is playing well. I cannot think of a single play off hand where he was burnt this preseason.

On Detroit's second drive, he was burnt for what should have been a touchdown, had Stafford not thrown a rocket 10 feet over the corner flag. The game day thread would not have been full of so many "At least the defense looks good" comments, had that easy pass been completed and the halftime score been 23-3.

I guess I'm the lone member of the Wendell fan club. Oh well.

Nah. I'd rather see him out there than Connolly. He's not the strongest, but he's consistent. The best in the league will push him back unless he gets help from his guard, which he will in the regular season. However, he's more consistent than Connolly, so there won't be as many surprise middle-of-the-line jailbreaks by ordinary DLines. I'll gladly see him out there this year, hopefully with Cannon next to him, as others have noted.

Will be in the first year of his new 6 year 40 million dollar deal.

Re: Post Game Thought - the car industry isn't the only thing struggling in Detriot e

* Turnovers killed them, but I thought our offense generally moved the ball well.

* Our defense, being put in position did pretty well. Our front line, even without Wilfork, did a pretty good job.

* Ninko is really stepping up. Aggressive and decisive on all his moves

* Chandler has done well, but would like to see more decisive moves from him like Ninko. He falls on the ground too much

* Thomkins looked impressive against Lions rookie CB. I thought he went out of bounds too early on a few catches, but that's just nitpicking. He was awesome. Fantasy sleeper if you play Fantasy Football.

* Brady was great moving around in the pocket amidst all the pressure.

* Vollmer was taken to the woodshed by Jones. Needs to get off his stance quicker against guys like Jones who has speed and strength.

* Mayo is still meh. I watched a little bit of the Ravens game and Kuechly is doing what Mayo should be able to do, given that Mayo is just as athletic and probably stronger. Mayo cleans plays up well, but he needs to be an impact player if this defense is gonna be elite. For someone who supposedly studies a lot of film, his instincts are not not very good.

* Spikes on the other hand, has pretty good instincts, but is just too slow. He's coverage is awful. If Brady were to play against our defense, he'd throw 300 yards just picking on Spikes alone.

* Tavon is a poor man's Merriweather. Always out of position but with less athleticism. Awful pick that we all knew was awful when it happened, even if you didn't want to admit it.

Mayo is still meh? What on God's earth are you talking about?

I saw a bit of Kuechly last night...guy is a baller.

Pretty apt comparison. I've noticed that it's gotten more difficult for his apologists to defend him recently. Constantly out of position and consistently making mental errors. Just a god awful pick for a guy that probably could have been had in the sixth or seventh and, if not, then we weren't missing much anyway. The Bequette pick flies under the radar, but that was a bad pick as well. T.Y. Hilton went two picks later.

Maybe meh is too harsh, but he's always a step behind instead of making impact plays. He tackles well 5 yards after the LOS.

I'm actually really surprised about Bequette. Tavon you could see had warning signs all over him but I definitely thought JB would be a solid pro. I suppose there's still time but it's not looking promising.

Not going down this road again, but needless to say I think this assessment is off-base.
