I thought that Brady's masterful two series showed why he is the GOAT QB.
Mallett was uncertain when he came in, but being inserted with 1st and 10 on the 1 foot line is hardly conducive to a relaxed performance, on entry.
But I thought he was settling down, and moving the team, as he went on. He produced 6 FD in about a 3/4 of play and the winning 10 points, in three drives, one endingina missed FGA.
I wonder if he would have gotten even more comfortable had he continued to play, before being lifted as a precaution. I know when Svitek stopped playing RG, the other reserves were giving up consistent interior pressure on every play. When that happens to Brady, he doesn't produce great stats either.
I know some fans carry around a list of pet guys they criticize, but Mallett is very visibly much better than last pre-season. His improved footwork, has greatly reduced/ended the sailing passes missing targets by several yards. Boyce still got a hand on his worst miss. This is really only his second preseason with a Training Camp. He shows me that by the time of his third preseason is complete, he may be ready to become startable QB.
For that matter, he did move the club, and may start to show some more fireworks, as this preseason goes on.
Outside of a a pressured throwaway to avoid a sack, Ryan never threw a pass that a receiver couldn't or didn't get a hand on. His accuracy is NOT as good as Brady in the short and intermediate range, but no one else is either. But it is now a question of feet and inches now.
Another pet target is Tavon Wilson, because of his "reach" drafting according to Mel Kiper.
Tavon was drafted to be a fast James Sanders, with size to play SS. BB had soured on athletic Safeties that couldn't be coached to be a leader of the Defense, like Meriwether and Chung. He has coverage ability to play average CB, something farcical to contemplate for most SS.
He was criticized for last night's play of CB rookies Ryan and Price, not covering their receivers very well. He was where he was supposed to be on several plays on completions over the middle, while they were not. In short it was the obverse of the DJ TD over Talib, with Safety support by Gregory being very late.
Progress is evident with Tavon too, IMHO. I expect he will develop into the starter BB envisioned by 2014.
Question for all: Why was the mishandled FG snap blown dead? I know there is a rule about some kind of Kick mishandling being recoverable, but not advanceable. When is that?
BTW Jamie Collins was cheated out of the forced fumble on the FG holder when he ripped the ball loose, recovered by Logan Ryan and runback to the end zone.
The Refs quick whistles cost the Pats two TDs.
