Patriots Training Camp Day 10 (@ Philadelphia)

On ESPN's NFL Inside, r Schefter threw out Thompkins name as one to watch. Everyone also noted Amandola's strong camp.

I do have to ask it because I'm absolutely befuddled why Patriot fans want to talk about Peyton Manning more than Tom Brady.

He's a QB for another team. Big deal.

Because by our nature, human beings like conflict. It gets to be a boring *********** sitting around talking about just how good Brady is.

With Manning, and the media's fawning over him, we have some conflict that makes for lively discussions.

Fair enough.

Here is a national perspective, from former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah, of nfl.com and the NFL Network:

- Eagles/Pats joint practice today... Anxious to see how Brady looks with new WR group

- Riley Cooper and Tim Tebow will practice on the same field today. All eyes will be on Cooper.

- After a slow start to practice, Riley Cooper caught 3 deep balls in the team period. High 5's from his teammates & a hug from Vick.

- Tom Brady looked phenomenal during practice. Unbelievable rhythm, timing and accuracy. He makes it look easy.

- I was very impressed by Patriots WR Kenbrell Thompkins. He's a long, athletic dude with strong hands. Brady found him a bunch today.

- LB Mychal Kendricks was the most impressive defensive player for the Eagles. Outstanding range vs Vereen (college teammates)

- I won't be surprised if Chris Polk emerges as the #2 RB for the Eagles. He had a great practice

- Amendola is an outstanding route runner and Brady already has a good feel for him. The ball is out pre-break and on the $ consistently.

- In my opinion, Foles had a slightly better practice than Vick. Both guys connected on deep balls. However, both guys hold the ball too long

- Tebow struggled.

- One of the most impressive plays of practice: Mayo running stride for stride with Bryce Brown on a wheel route.

Quick question. Yesterday and today a lot of teams released updated depth charts, do the pats usually do that during TC?

Which Patriots fans want to talk about Peyton Manning more than they want to talk about Brady? Honestly, I've never come across a single one.

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady will forever be linked by history. They have had pretty much the single greatest quarterback rivalry in NFL history, and public opinion is pretty much divided on which guy is the best. It's the classic story of the first overall pick, showered with praise from the time he ever picked up a football, against the scrappy, hard-working kid who, a mere three years before winning his first Super Bowl, was sixth in the depth chart for his college team.

There are so many angles, nuances and classic moments in the relationship between these two players, that it boggles my mind that you would think of Peyton Manning as just "a QB on another team".

Quick question. Yesterday and today a lot of teams released updated depth charts, do the pats usually do that during TC?

They've already released one but it was utterly meaningless. It just had people ranked in order of seniority at all the positions so rookies were always at the bottom of their respective positions.

Schefter just mentioned Kenbrell Thompkins as a player to watch.

Well Schefter must be stupid.

Because even though guys that know something about the NFL have said he is a player to watch, they are stupid for thinking so according to felger and massarotti.

He was an undrafted free agent that 32 teams passed on for 7 rounds in the draft including the Patriots. So because of that there is just no way he can come into the NFL and the Patriots and be a contributor.

Yep that's from the two guys that know the least about football out of all the Boston media.

The NFL requires all 32 teams to do so.

I wouldn't put any relevance in to who is placed where on those depth charts.

Why are so many Patriot fans so hung up on Peyton Manning? What's with the inferiority complex?

M shall I assume you’re referring to my statement about Peyton Manning lacking the same molecules to overcome adversity that Brady has? Your perception on this subject seems to be a defensive, and it doesn’t merit that in reality; the point of my statement was centered on complementing Brady for the possessing the trait and distinguishing the trait by referencing another great quarterback in his era that does not possess it (Manning). Obviously there are other quarterbacks in this era that lacks the trait (few who’ve played the game have/had it) but I chose to use Manning because of his notoriety both amongst this fan base and nationwide.

I personally think highly of Manning as a quarterback; however I do believe he requires everything to go as planned in order for him to ultimately come out on top, and if things don’t stay the course he will fail and ultimately pass the buck to an offensive line or kicker. That’s just the reality of Manning, not an insult.

More on today's practice, this from Eric Galko of Optimum Scouting:

- Granted I've only watched a few minutes of practice, but Ryan Mallett looks smoother in his drops/repositioning than I remember in college.

- Russell Shepard just worked Alfonso Dennard on an inside route for a short catch. Shepard continues to have success

- TEBOW THROWS INTERCEPTION TO CARY WILLIAMS. Good coverage, terribly late throw.

- Alfonzo Dennard hasn't been nearly as good as I anticipated. Struggling to adjust to shorter routes, beat deep twice already route-wise.

- QBs/WRs vs DBs are done for now. Brady is expectedly unbelievable. Barkley/Foles two best #Eagles passers. #Patriots young WRs seem polished

- 7 on 7s starting now. Should be a much better look at each QB, WR, and DB now.

- Foles looks the part so far. Effective in red zone most recently. Using eyes to get subtle separation.

- #Eagles just ran the formation I alluded to earlier today in my article. Three tight ends, with Ertz at X, Casey in slot, Harbor at H-back.

- On the #Patriots side, Sudfeld's had two nice grabs for TDs (including one in back corner). Should've had a 3rd, but Tebow hopped it.

- First play of team work, and Aqib Talib jumps Foles's quick throw, near interception.

- Based on their formations thus far, I'm expecting more 12 personnel this year than 11 for #Eagles.Too much TE talent, not enough depth at WR

- Foles with a deep bomb to DJax. Over Tavon Wilson, who had that deep route responsibility. Foles moved Wilson just enough.

- Aaron Dobson vs Cary Williams fight!

- Riley Cooper had a solid day, especially late. He's assumed X-WR spot quickly than imagined. But, Avant/Ertz also got X-WR work

- Riley Cooper had a solid day, especially late. He's assumed X-WR spot quickly than imagined. But, Avant/Ertz also got X-WR work

- Thompkins looked pretty damn impressive today in my first time seeing him. At least based on my expectations.

- Just wrote up some #Patriots notes for @NEPatriotsDraft. Highlights: WRs Boyce/Thompkins/TE Sudfeld impressed most. LBs did well vs PHI TEs.

- Thompkins and Boyce being as good as they are is awesome news. Dobson just needs to be vertical presence. Solid but untested unit

- #Eagles OLBs still not crisp in drops/exchanged from 3-4...#Patriots LB unit solid overall

- (regarding thoughts on Jamie Collins): One I'll be focusing more on tomorrow. Saw handful of fluid drops in cov. Got hands on TEs.

More from Mike Reiss:

- On Aaron Dobson & Cary Williams being pulled from practice, Chip Kelly explains coaches spoke before session about sitting those who scrap.

- Tom Brady on rookie WR Aaron Dobson: "He's done great. I'm proud of all those young players; we've thrown a lot of stuff at them."

- Tom Brady mentions WRs Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce & Kenbrell Thompkins ("KT," he says) & TE Zach Sudfeld when talking youngsters on offense.

Thompkins getting lots of plaudits from Daniel Jeremiah on NFLN

Dennard's been out for days, so I'm not reading anything into his day beyond that.

Logan Ryan's best defensive scheme fit is in the Cover 2 and he has to have safety help when defending against a receiver like DeSean Jackson.

His collegiate film shows that he has a hard time recovering once the wide receiver gets behind him and I wouldn't expect any different in the NFL.

With that said - when the play is in front of him, he is a solid one-on-one tackler including against the run.

Agreed, which is why I initially thought/hoped he was being drafted as a safety conversion project.

Jeff Howe ?@jeffphowe 4m

Brady just completed 20-of-20 in first 1-on-1s vs Eagles CBs. Dobson made a filthy one-handed turnaround catch. Boyce 2 difficult grabs

"Is it 12 o'clock already?", said my wiener.
