Tebow working on zone-read plays in practice (EDIT: and "catching passes" too)

It does, but guys who are worth putting in a special run package like that to me have to be good running threats. 3.2 YPC last year and an unknown entity when it comes to blocking =/= a good running threat

Anyway I'm not really that interested in playing back and forth gotcha games so I'm done with this topic. The end.

Thank God!

Who'd have thought:

During dummy drills at the goal line (offense versus nobody), Tom Brady was playing quarterback and backup QB Ryan Mallett was lining up next to or behind him at running back. While Tim Tebow was practicing goal line plays at the end of the field, I thought it was peculiar to see Mallett lined up like this; he didn't receive any handoffs or catch any balls but he did run routes.

Well me! :rocker:

I still think short yardage and goalline alongside Brady is the way to go with him. I have no idea how a DC defends a 22 package of Tebow-Vereen-Gronk-other inline TE-Amendola. Or, swap out Vereen with Dobson to add an extra tall redzone receiver.

Sat next to a woman who was a football fan from NY at practice, she wears here religion on her sleeve and is a huge Tebowite. My wife, kept her mouth shut(for once).... we were making small talk and when practice began she nearly achieved rapture.

About half way through practice she muttered, that Tebow was not very good was he?? She then followed up with how long it takes for him to get rid of the ball and how many of his throws were off, compared to #12 & #15....

But bet she is still a believer... btw Tebow only played QB yesterday...

Whoopee ding dong doo... direct snap to Tebow is still a horrible idea and leaves #12 vulnerable to an injury unless Tebow can block.

By the way: Woodhead 4.3 YPC in the last two years. Tebow last year: 3.2. Woodhead is a great blocker. So far there is no evidence that Tebow is such.

I'd rather see Woodhead in such a package 10 times out of 10.

Edit: Saw your reply, and the same is true for Faulk.

The end.

Tebow's career average is 5.0 yards per carry , 197 carries 989 yards

Tebow blocked well against the 49 ers last year out of the backfield , including against Aldon Smith ( arguably the best player at his position in the NFL)

You research is anecdotal at best.. he looked terrible at practice yesterday.

Whose position does he take on this team?? Do you waste a roster spot on a 3rd string emergency quarterback who can block??

Speaking of anecdotal and in reference to how he looked yesterday . This is what ESPN reported :

2. Tim Tebow had his best day of work in training camp, showing steady improvement from recent performances. He showed good arm strength and accuracy on throws down the field, and looks to be more decisive with each live rep. In addition, the team walked through some read option work early in practice, something Tebow's movement skills can be used in. From afar, it seems as if Tebow's work with offensive assistant coach Brian Daboll is paying early dividends.

NFL Observations from fifth practice - ESPN

And this from Pat's pulpit ( SB Nation)

After a sloppy performance on Monday night, Tom Brady and Tim Tebow had terrific performances on Tuesday. Besides a few overthrows on goal line drills, Tom Brady was on target all afternoon long. Brady and Danny Amendola seem to be building chemistry every day and I look forward to seeing them in live game action. One of the top plays of the day was a stunning one-handed catch by tight end Zach Sudfeld. Even though it was a difficult grab, Brady put it perfectly over the head of Adrian Wilson, who had pretty good coverage on the play. In my opinion Tim Tebow made the pass of the day when he threw an absolutely perfect deep ball to Lavelle Hawkins during one-on-one drills. Cornerback Logan Ryan couldn't have played the ball better but Tebow put the pass right into his breadbasket. Tebow has improved everyday and I think he could potentially pass Ryan Mallett on the depth chart.

Mallett wasn't able to bounce back from his bad night on Monday. He made a few good passes during 7 on 7s, including one where he nailed Matthew Slater down the left sideline but it was dropped. Mallett lacks consistency and seems to struggle whenever there is any amount of pressure. I can't help but think that Mallett needs to take some heat off the ball when it comes to intermediate routes. On a short five-yard pass to Kamar Aiken he fired it in, forcing a difficult catch. Aiken dropped the ball and there is no excuse for that, but in my opinion Mallett needs to improve on his touch in order to make things easier for the receiver.

First of all, I guess you didn't see the words "last year" after I said 3.2 YPC.

And I did do research. I thought it was very interesting to see a noticeable decline in Tebow's production on the ground in 2011 after the Jets game. And there's no "it was the Jets" excuse, he was a Bronco. Wanna see his YPC game log? After the Jets game: 3.05, 3.25, 4.08, 7.75 (the game where the Pats allowed 200 yards rushing in the first quarter but they shut him down after that), 3.40, 2.67, 5.0 (the Steelers playoff game) and then 2.67 against the Pats in the playoff loss.

How do you know the 3.2 isn't a lot closer to the real Tebow than 5.0? Maybe the league has figured him out.

And Brad Smith was way more productive from the Jets WC on the ground than Tebow was.

Compare Tebow against any good running QB in football... guys like Wilson, Kaep, RG3, Newton, etc... and Tebow is near the bottom of that list IMO. This is not to say he's a terrible runner...but for a guy who supposedly is such a great runner that some people insist the Pats HAVE TO design plays just for him... he really ain't all that.

As for his blocking ability, one play does not make a blocker that I want protecting #12. By all reports last season he wasn't good at it. Can he be a good blocker with us? We shall see.

.

Because only a Moron like Tony Sparano would call so many straight up the middle line bucks and expect different results. It is a miracle is that his average was not 1.2

It sounds like you did not see the games last year. If you didn't its perfectly understandable why you have questions.

Another factor that hurt Tebow last year was the 20 pounds he packed on (as instructed). As I understand it he has lost that weight so that should also have an impact on his quickness.

He had more than one block SB1 , even in that game he had more than one . He blocked well last year, I have no idea what reports you are talking about. perhaps the blocked punt against the Dolphins? Westhoff said in the post game new conference that tebow made the correct read and block on that play.

Obviously I do not follow the Jets but I did see some of their games.

Anyway Tebow's composite YPC after the Jets game in 2011 (and he was a Bronco, he didn't put on weight, and Sparano wasn't coaching him) was 4.2.
Like I said he's not a terrible runner, but 4.2 does not compare favorably with any good running QB in the NFL. The decline is definitely there and you still have to wonder if the league figured him out. We shall see.

Tebow IMO is an unknown entity as a blocker. I would rather have a sure thing protecting #12 than an unknown entity. I think you can understand why.

New England Patriots Training Camp - Day Five Observations - Pats Pulpit

You counter anecdotal evidence with more anecdotal evidence, all the while failing to indicate whose spot he will take on this 53 man roster??

Do you think he will unseat Mallett?? How about some of our running backs?? TE??

You have to see how he looks, and not solely rely on what others say.. simply he looks very awkward and takes too much time(indecisive).

You and others want him to make this team based on the Tebow the myth, rather than Tebow the Football Player...

Y

You and others want him to make this team based on the Tebow the myth, rather than Tebow the Football Player...

There is no need to put words in my mouth. I have simply shown you reports that counter some of what you claim. I posted a video of Tebow blocking and cited actual stats.

Nothing I have said perpetuates any perceived myth.

As far as taking a spot on the 53 man roster , I personally think he can play ST and relieve someone on the lower part of the 53. If you want a name , I don't have one just yet, lets see how pre season plays out.

I also think that whether he makes it or not , I trust Belichick and McDaniels to make the right decision.

I cant be more reasonable than that.

You mentioned Mallet. Some reports have him as unsure and jittery. perhaps Tebow was simply brought in to push Mallet and make him uncomfortable. perhaps Belichik wants to see Mallet under pressure before live bullets start flying. Perhaps Tebow was brought in because they see a potentially versatile Swiss army knife type player (which BB loves) .

I don't know. I don't think anyone knows at this point except BB and J-Mc.

Tebow IMO is an unknown entity as a blocker. I would rather have a sure thing protecting #12 than an unknown entity. I think you can understand why.

I am pretty sure BB and JM know what they are doing, IF Tebow makes the team and IF he gets on the field at another position , you won't have anything to worry about.

How do you know the 3.2 isn't a lot closer to the real Tebow than 5.0? Maybe the league has figured him out.

Because, look at Tebow's entire history as a mobile QB. The 3.2 YPC is the odd stat and a very small sample size compared to the rest.

You research is anecdotal at best.. he looked terrible at practice yesterday.

Jake Bequette had the some total of one tackle last season. Nate Ebner contributed very little.

So you propose to have Tebow take the spot of a defensive lineman or a reserve safety.. how does that work for the whole roster???

I believe most games that Bequette was inactive(13), Ebner played on a lot of special teams... both of those players needed a season of conditioning and acclimation to the NFL... both are on the "bubble" this year.

Like so many you seek an exception, probably will not happen...

It may or may not happen and I'm not proposing anything. I'm just pointing out that at the bottom of the roster, there can be scope for players that aren't on the field every other down.

BB spent a weekend of his valuable time considering the Tebow move, Josh McDaniels drafted him in the first round and I get the impression Robert Kraft is a fan so it's not like Tebow making the roster is completely out of left field. All I'm doing is exploring ways that it might happen.

Edit: And we've had three QBs on the final roster in the past so it's hardly a big deal.

I would love to see the report that is claiming Ryan Mallett has been playing "unsure and jittery".

We'll be waiting. Probably forever. If you do provide the report, make sure you have your link just in case someone wants to not cite a source.

Darryl - very good job this morning in your responses.

I guess I missed the part where each and every roster position was spoken for and belonged to certain people, such that Tebow would have to take "their spot".

My recollection is that ALL the roster spots basically belong to Bill Belichick and HE will decide who gets one and who doesn't. If Bill and company decide that there's value in having Tebow on the roster, then he will get one of those spots.

Lets backtrack you wanted him to make this team based on his meritorious blocking.. cannot waste a roster spot on that.

Now you want him to make it as a QB, he may still do that.. but do not be surprised if he does not make this team, no matter how much he is liked.

One thing you learn about this team is that any roster spot is based on merit.. not on how well you are liked.

In the past couple of years there has been a large influx of rookies and UDFA's who are showing quite a bit in practice.. the odds of him making it are about 30%.... a lot of things have to fall in place for that to happen.

At what position??

So who does he displace, based on the evidence provided in this link??? The other poster believed that he could displace Bequette or Ebner... do you agree??

There are only so many spots, and a whole bunch of talent on that field.. he has to take something away from someone else to make this team. Can they afford this luxury??? Not a lot of folks would agree with that...

He is a nice guy, but there are a lot of nice guys on this team. He is an average NFL Player..none of these are reasons to be on the final 53...
