Jake Ballard is Taken Off the PUP List » Ex-Pats

Jake Ballard can now show the Patriots what he can do. The team moved Ballard off the PUP list today. The big tight end looks to be the Patriots insurance policy should Rob Gronkowski be unable to go to start the season. Jake was picked up off the waiver wire when the Giants tried to move him onto injured reserve and he had mostly been rehabbing a serious knee injury he sustained back in February of 2012.

Ballard has an opportunity to shine.

So is the media spin now going from how he was barely able to walk at OTAs and minicamp to Ballard has a real chance to break out with Hernandez gone and Gronk on the PUP?

If Ballard is removed from the PUP list, does the roster increase now to 91?

No. Essentially all reserve lists (including IR) count against the 90-man limit.

Good news, hopefully he stays healthy..

Makes me wonder if it was just to shake up the media? They haven't even started camp yet.

Guys go through a quick PUP placement every year and it usually means they didn't pass the conditioning run or something trivial like that.

Loved this pickup when BB made it.

Love it even more now.

For sure. Imagine if they didn't have him coming in? I know they could have found someone somewhere, but this has potential (said the hopeless optimist).

He really did not shine in mini-camp, hope he can bring something to TC.

Great news no way we want Daniel *stone hands* Fells or Hoo-who 1-2 or 2-3 on our dept chart.

Do you actually go through life as negative and miserable as all of your posts make it seem? I swear to god you must be Steve from Fall River because every single post you make comes across with the same incredibly negative and misery laden tenor that his calls to WEEI do.

What he said was accurate.

Hoo and Fells offered basically nothing in the receiving game last season on a team that needed a TE to step up when Gronk bit the dust. If Hoo and Fells dont make the team I wont be shedding any tears. Ballard needs to be better than those two wannabes.

Well nobody is going to fill Gronk's shoes. More generally, there are question marks besides the name of every TE and also every WR (except Amendola), with Gronk and Ballard (injuries), Fells and Hooman (mediocre performance) and Sudfeld and Ford (rookies). There were reports that Fells was playing injured last year, and Hooman lacked game experience, so there is at least some basis for expecting improvement from these players. The challenge is that there are limited opportunities before roster cut downs with which to evaluate and project future development. To further complicate matters, the last TE on the roster is also competing against end-of-roster players at other positions. Bottom line is that, after Gronk, there are no all pro TEs on the roster so they will need to get productivity from a number of players. The competition is wide open and the number of TEs and WRs they will keep is uncertain, which is what makes training camp interesting.

Great news for the Pats.
Anybody think he be a good FF sleeper pick?
