Dennard arrested for DUI

The message was already sent when we cut our 40 million dollar TE.

Just because Dennard is an idiot doesn't mean everyone else on the team is. As far as I know there were three bad eggs on our entire roster. Dennard, Talib, and Hernandez. Talib will be on his best behavior this year to get his contract, Hernandez is gone, Dennard is just an idiot. I don't expect to hear of any problems from Mayo/Chandler/Ridley etc.

As much as we'd all like to pretend the NFL is just a platform to show off good moral standards, the team is a big time company that needs to win. Is DUI good? No. But it isn't murder. We need Dennard.

It is the NFL office, not individual teams that should be mandated for institutionalizing mandatory penalties for this behavior. Patriots should just fine him and tell the team behavior detrimental to the team will result in fines.

To agree further with you: the Pats didn't cut Edelman.

To play Devil's advocate: those other players likely won't have probation agreements hanging over their heads.

and further Devil's work, Edelman was a 1st offense and was exonerated from the false Jets fan charges

My 1st reaction was cut the doofus but there's lots to consider here. The NE Patriots are not a church group, they're an entertainment company so that both works for and against Dennard.

I think cutting him is too premature. How many of you advocating for cutting him will complain to high heaven when the Patriots do not have a quality starting outside CB?

If the Pats cut him, he will get picked up immediately.

Problems with cutting him.
Pats signed Stallworth who was convicted of killing a person while DUI so why the change in policy? Does ANYONE think that cutting this idiot will help the Pats image with the sports media? Nope, they'll bring up Stallworth as hypocrisy and call it a too little too late PR stunt. Patriot org in tailspin.

Then what happens were Gronk, TFB or whomever to get a DUI? While deliberately ignoring or dismissing Dennard's precursor behavior, the media would have a field day unless they too were cut. Disaster.

And at least some players would harbor justified thoughts of unequal treatment. Not good.

There's lots of downside to cutting this moron.

The thing is I bet if there was no Hernandez thing right now, most people would be saying this isn't a big deal. It was just horrible timing on Dennard's part.

I don't think Dennard should get cut for this. The media is going overboard with that. I think they are in the right to discipline him if he isn't from the league. I think cutting him is just reactionary.

If not for the Hernandez situation I don't think anyone would be saying to cut him.

If you would not cut Dennard before the Hernandez situation you should not be recommending you cut him now.

I never mentioned Hernandez. I think he should be cut or not cut based upon the "merits" of his actions and the consequences of his actions. If his parole is revoked, do you still want him on the team if he's in jail?

I couldn't agree more. You cannot change your business based on the actions of one individual. That is a losing strategy.

Suspend him a game or two for actions deferential to the team, move on. Keep doing things business as usual.

People need to stop holding athletes to these high moral standards. Parents especially. For every Tom Brady there is going to be a Alfonzo Dennard. These guys bash each others brains in for a living.

There are a lot of differences.

1) Stallworth wasn't on the team at the time of his DUI.

2) Stallworth wasn't on probation having just been sentenced just three months earlier.

3) Stallworth didn't do this in the immediate wake of the franchise's biggest black eye.

As for the Gronk or Brady, they wouldn't have been on probation and this wouldn't be the second criminal activity they've been caught up in in the last year.

I can see where you are coming from, but I have to admit to disagreeing.

I do not agree. Not now. Hernandez' arrest changed everything for this franchise.

The Hernandez situation highlighted the Patriots' decision to drop down to draft or bring in free agents with violent crimes in their past. These guys should get zero tolerance for even the slightest step over the line.

Corey Dillon came in with an arrest for domestic assault and was a model citizen. If he can do it, so can these guys. Randy Moss had a couple of moronic run-ins with the Minneapolis police. He stayed out of trouble.

Dennard did not. He needs to go.

If you would of cut him either way that's fine, my point was not to change how you would handle something based on the actions of one person.

Doing this in the immediate aftermath of Hernandez demonstrates even greater levels of stupidity. It absolutely is a factor.

But by some of those standards, Dennard should be treated as this is his first offense. Dennard wasn't a Patriot or even an NFL player when he punched a cop. So based on your standards, his only offense is a suspicion of DUI charge which happens a lot in the NFL.

And I don't think Hernandez has anything to do with this case. Dennard should be judged for his own actions and not the actions of Hernandez.

The bottom-line is that the Patriots should not sacrificing their chances of winning a superbowl because of a minor blip on the PR radar. This Dennard thing will blow over..The Hernandez issue is a separate issue and has nothing to do with Dennard.

DUI is a misdemeanor, you do not cut a guy for making a minor mistake.

The Patriots will still sell out the stadium every week, they still will sell plenty of gear, and they will still attract top talent. Nothing will change by keeping him. This whole "damage the Patriots brand" nonsense is just that...nonsense.

Disagree. I'm not saying NE should ignore Stallworth's earlier DUI, just that they weren't put in a position of having to keep him afterward. Signing a guy a few years later is a much different proposition that living with him through it.

If Stallworth got into a bar fight or something as mundane as that, I'd have less tolerance than I would with another player. I feel I'm being consistent.

When said "minor mistake" comes just three months after being sentenced for another alcohol related major mistake, it looks less minor to me. Guess we disagree on this one. :confused2:

Shades of 86/87. This could be a rough ride, fellas.

Sure, it was stupid, but it is not like he committed violence against somebody.

I think the Pats would be more lenient IF he wasn't on probation for punching a police officer. IMO, the pats will cut him if his parole is revoked and he ends up in jail.
