Pats submit offer sheet for Emmanuel Sanders

Per LaCanfora

RT @JasonLaCanfora: The Patriots just submitted an offer sheet on Steelers WR Emmanuel Sanders. some actual restricted free agent movement.

Great.

Ian Rapoport ?@RapSheet 2m

The #Patriots have submitted an offer sheet for #Steelers RFA/WR Emmanuel Sanders, I'm told. It's a one-year deal. No details yet.

Now that is disappointing if it's a one year deal. It's a 3rd rounder we are giving up. Unless it's a funny contract I don't get that.

Re: Pats submit offer sheet for Emmanuel Sanders

Yup, I just heard this on 98.5 from the same source. Hopefully this actually goes somewhere....

Although, I'm not sure Sanders is a great fit for this offense. We've never had much success with players of his skill set.

Re: Pats submit offer sheet for Emmanuel Sanders

New England has signed Steelers restricted FA WR Emmanuel Sanders to an offer sheet.

Awesome

Re: Pats submit offer sheet for Emmanuel Sanders

Have to wonder about the mentality behind giving up a 3rd for an one year deal.

Re: Pats submit offer sheet for Emmanuel Sanders

Schefter tweets that Sanders has just signed the offer sheet.

Re: Pats submit offer sheet for Emmanuel Sanders

But if we get him. You can bet your ass we go defense in draft n prob a wr late if anything

I guess we have to wait on this but I hope some sort of extension is in the works if the Steelers don't match. Otherwise it makes no sense.

Re: Pats submit offer sheet for Emmanuel Sanders

Strange it would be an one year deal. The Steelers aren't in a position to match much of anything. I wonder if this is just a ploy to get Sanders with an offer that the Steelers can't match and then redo his deal after he is signed to a more cap friendly deal.

Re: Pats submit offer sheet for Emmanuel Sanders

Good news but a 3rd for a one year deal is really really odd imo.

Re: Pats submit offer sheet for Emmanuel Sanders

Someone with better cap knowledge can correct me: Could it be that it's a one year deal because that means the cap hit is 100% on this year, which makes it tougher for the Steelers to match? Then they could renegotiate an extension after the deal is done? Is that allowed or does it even make sense?

My guess is they are just offering him a deal that the Steelers can't match and after they acquire him, they will give him a long term contract that is cap friendly. I am pretty sure they can do that under the CBA.

That was my thinking. I know you can redo any contract one time each season. I think that applies to new contract too. Which would be what you are suggesting.

If not, they can work a trade with the Steelers and sign him to a deal since in a trade (like it was done with Welker), the offer sheet becomes null and void.

The only thing i can think of is that they believe the Steelers want Sanders to sign a team friendly longer term deal and that short terming it coupled with the pick will lead the Steelers to pass on it. Hopefdully the Steelers pass because the Patriots need WR help badly.

Could you elaborate?

Anyway, great news. Sanders and Amendola would be some nice targets for Brady.

That did occur to me, but then you have to think that the Pats must feel pretty confident in their ability to resign him, otherwise its a big gamble.

Yeah, well, how many WRs have the Pats taken in the first half of the draft that never panned out? This guy is a known quantity and *likely* will be around longer than one season.

Emmanuel Sanders, a RFA, visited the Pats. Has signed 1-year tender

Is there any limitations or time period on when you can restructure/extended a player after a contract is signed? Could it just be a huge 1 year that will just get redone once the Steelers decline to match it? Once the Steelers decline that offer sheet can he sign a different contract term or does that have to be submitted too and declined also?

I'm fine with the deal i just think giving a 3rd for a 1 year deal with an RFA is odd. I still hope the Patriots go WR early even if they end up with Sanders.

Couldn't they sign him with a nod & a handshake that he will get an extension during the season if he's being productive?
