Pats re-sign CB Marquice Cole

Sadly Edelman did a much better job of covering Bolden in the 12 AFCCG than Cole covering Bolden in the 13 AFCCG

Signing a ST/CB was happening sooner or later. I think all (including the patriot FO) are focused on a pass-rusher, RT and a WR or two.

I like Cole but wondering what the plans are for a pass rush, RT, and WR. Cap running low to sign all these guys?

Excellent.

This guy is a solid special teams player with a big upside. That means the Patriots have five young cornerbacks that have worked together under contract: Talib, Dennard, Arrington, Ras-I Dowling and Cole.

That puts McCourty at safety full-time with Adrian Wilson, Steve Gregory, Nate Ebner and Tavon Wilson, who I liked as a rookie.

There's an upgrade in Adrian Wilson to go with a lot of continuity from 2012 to 2013. This revolving door of defensive backs always made me crazy. We never found out how some guys might develop in a unit that learned to know where one another would be and how to react, as a group to various schemes.

That's a nice special teams and hands unit as well.

Man, if Ras-I Dowling could fulfill just a little of his potential, this would be a solid defensive backfield. Ras-I has the size and skills, but I'd bring in one more grizzled veteran CB at a good value rate to take his job if he so much as sneezes.

Looking at all three levels of the defense gives me confidence that their side of the ball can be formidable. It feels like the Patriots are one inside or edge pass rusher short of being a complete defense, and maybe they have that in Armstead.

The frustrating thing about Cole to me in the AFCCG is that Cole was basically there on most of the plays just got beat to the ball

depth is important and he knows the system

Good signing. Lots of upside. I like how our defense is coming together.

Huzzah! Let the Marquice Cole era begin!!

Ras-I really excites me. From the limited exposure we've had to him, I like a lot of what I see. I am hopeful that injury curse that has seemingly affected his time in the NFL is finally solved in 2013. The secondary will be immensely improved for it.

That's not a very good way to look at roster-building. Putting aside the offensive woes in that game for a second (and the fact that they should've had the game out of hand in their favor by halftime if they executed) - the Talib injury and the ripple effect it had on the D spelled the end of our season. Are you saying that we shouldn't be concerned with that?

Our #4 CB or our backup slot guy will have to cover great receivers during the course of the season, and unfortunately, maybe even during the playoffs. If he's completely incapable, then that's a problem. The NFL is too pass-happy these days for Cole to be our CB4.

Bottom line: you're only good as your worst player

We are saved!

I am totally underwhelmed at this FA season which is disappointing considering how few draft picks the Patriots have.

I agree. The patriots are one or two players from fielding a far superior team to START this season than they had last year at the start. Big reason is the stability in the secondary, and now with two DBs with serious attitude back there.

Second big reason is the maturing defense - they needed a year. Now, get us a pass rusher, which I think they will, and our D is MUCH improved.

On O, I don't underestimate Ballard. The kid can play. We need one more receiver.

I'm feeling pretty good about 2013. 2012 got us to the AFCCG, and our opponent has been slashed to pieces. Right now, there aren't a lot of teams in the AFC I would pick against the Pats - as in, none.

The NFC is stacked, but hey, only one comes out from there, and if we have to play them, then it means we're deeper in next year than we were this year, right?

I hope the contract's for not one penny more than the vet minimum.

Beside Talib, I die a little inside every time I read that the pats resign one of their own players from last year's secondary.

Drama Queen post of the year. Really? Let Chung walk. I'm guessing you did the happy dance. Signed Kyle Arrington who plays the slot very well and Cole a 5th cb.

As special teamer and back-up playing the star, he's serviceable. Wasn't half bad during regular season there; obviously he was totally overmatched versus Boldin in AFCCG.

The key is having him on the field only if Arrington is hurt, rather than him being on the field because Arrington moved outside. So in that light, I would still like to have another serviceable backup outside corner so that when Dowling goes down, Arrington isn't the first backup there.

Actually, the key is improving on him through the draft and giving Arrington some actual competition. That's why I like the Honey Badger so much. And he should be available late.

I don't understand why he was put on Boldin anways like I said. Arrington should've stayed in the slot and try your luck with Cole on Jacoby outside. Instead you downgrade 2 positions. But hopefullly Ras I or a draft pick/FA can be an upgrade to Cole so it won't matter.

I think we need one more dependable CB or S(which would allow DMC to slide over to CB in case of injury) and we are set in the secondary.

Cole is likely the #1 5th corner in the league (or close to #1). ANd just, BTW, that is NOT his major expected contribution. He is our top gunner.

That would be Slater, no?

That's a helpful perspective. If your #5 CB is one of the top 100 CB's in the league, you've done well there.
