They could franchise him and lock him up like we did with Cassell.
20m is a lot of money to spend - look at the pain the Ravens are experiencing.

The tag was $14.5 million this year for a non exclusive franchise QB. The Ravens use an exclusive tag on Flacco.

Only 14.5m. Well that's alright then
I get the thinking but I think it's somewhat of a better thing for the team getting him. Say they traded a #2. Sure it sucks if Mallett washes out and you lose a #2 but you also get a two year look without locking yourself into a big contract. The other side is still trading a #2 and giving him a big extension - now if he's a bust you're much worse off.The one problem for teams maybe trading for Mallett is they can't negotiate a contract with him until next year. What if he doesn't want to negotiate with them? They give up a valuable draft pick for a 2 yr rental. It's a risk.
at this point, I would take the 6th pick for Mallet, sign fitzpatrick as a backup, then
let both welker and lloyd walk
sign talib, vollmer......and goldson
draft:
1a - DE ezikiel ansah
1b - DT sylvester williams
2 - WR robert woods
3 - WR ryan swope
woods and swope were both very productive in college and both are ahead of the curve when it comes to route running......
find some vet WR production for short $$

I'd prefer to trade a #2 and have to extend a proven QB in two years than trade a #2 and extend an unproven QB now.

I didn't say only I just said what it was.

I was joshing. I tend to agree with the argument you and others are making - I was just pointing out another aspect that I'd seen made.
You're definitely saying what the general consensus is. And the extension now would be a lot cheaper than the extension later. But if I were a team I'd prefer to find myself a great QB and pay him a LOT vs. get myself an unknown and pay him a moderate amount. The second option gives you greater flexibility because chances are, you'll be extending him for less and for a shorter term. Also, with only one year left on his contract, the price of acquisition is probably less.
Anyway, I'm just playing Devil's advocate - the original argument was one I'd seen made by people in the business arguing as to why teams were less likely to trade for Mallett this year rather than next.

The Julio Jones trade was fine for Cleveland. They landed Phil Taylor and moved around to net Trent Richardson as a subsequent deal. The fault lies in their drafting of Greg Little and Brandon Weeden. As usual, trades can be looked at in isolation if you remove the players picked.I don't think there is a chance for a trade involving their 1st round pick this year. For example look at the Julio Jones trade. Of course that was a better class with more elite talent but Atlanta had to give them their 1st- (27th overall), second- (59th) and fourth-round (124th) picks this year and their first- and fourth-round picks in 2012. That's the kind of deal you make to get a franchise QB. Do you really believe they could sell that to their fanbase? Mallett the franchise QB? Even with 2 years experience behind Tom Brady that's simply not going to happen, even if they receive a 1st rounder in exchange.
I'd say realistic is the 2013 3rd and 2014 2-3nd round choice. Maybe they'd be dumb enough to offer their 2014 1st rounder. But I don't think there is a chance for letting go of that 1st round choice this year.
But honestly he should be traded this off season to get anything for him. Next years class is going to be much better and that will make it next to impossible to trade him for a good pick as teams in need will try to adress that in the 1st round.
At this point in time I would rather we carry a 3rd QB on the roster for now. Mallet will be more valuable as a trade come training camp / start of season where injuries may factor in. Maybe we get lucky and draft Zac Dysert.
Hey guys, there's seriously 0% chance the Browns give up the 6th overall pick for Mallett, please stop discussing this as if there is any reasonable way it happens.
More likely is some combo of a lower pick this year (like a 4/5) and next years 3rd. No way they get a 1st, little chance they even see a second out of it.

Ok no problem I wasn't upset I just wasn't sure.
