2013 Patriots Draft Contact List

Checking out potential UDFAs.

Interesting:

Some WRs working out with the Patriots: GVSU's Charles Johnson and Washington State's Marquess Wilson.

Haven't heard of the first one.

More on Charles Johnson:

Charles Johnson was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, but his workout Monday in front of NFL scouts representing 18 teams at Grand Valley State’s pro day could have the receiver vaulting up draft boards.

Johnson (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.38 and 4.39 seconds. He had a 4.31-second short shuttle and 6.96-second three-cone drill. He had a 39 1/2-inch vertical jump and an 11-foot-1 broad jump. He performed 14 lifts of 225 pounds on the bench press. The receivers coaches from the Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets were present in Allendale, Mich. for the workout.

Johnson’s pro-day efforts would have placed him among the top performers at the combine in the 40, vertical jump and broad jump. Before his pro day, Johnson had guaranteed that he’d run a 4.39, reports MLive.com.

On the basis of his strong pro-day workout, Johnson could be selected as high as the fifth round in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Also interesting:

Jeff Tuel, QB (6-3, 218) — Tuel ran the 40 in 4.60 and 4.65 seconds. He had a 4.12-second short shuttle and a 6.90-second three-cone drill. He had a 32-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-3 broad jump. Tuel had a great pro day, and I suspect that he will have a strong showing when he has a workout with the New England Patriots on March 22. Tuel will be joined by receiver Marquess Wilson — who was at the combine — at that workout, which will be held at the University of Idaho. Tuel also has a two-day visit with the Buffalo Bills set up for April 8-9.

Jeff Tuel will sign a UDFA contract with the #Pats - Fits that system/mold.. Smart kid..

Looks like the Patriots are digging deep too.

Unfortunately can't link it but it's the Washington State Pro Day at NFL.com's Pro Day Blog.

The other day and elsewhere, Dabruinz speculated that the Pats could be signing 10-20 UDFA's this year. It's interesting that they appear to be looking at a lot of UDFA types. Is this recruitment that they're doing?

BTW, I didn't see it mentioned, but Marquess Wilson was told by WSU officials that he won't be allowed to participate at their Pro-Day.

(paraphrased) Tuel and Wilson were originally supposed to work out at Eastern Washington's Pro-Day, but an NCAA rule forbids larger schools from working out at smaller schools.

I think Tuel was doing it to help out Wilson since Tuel was his QB until Wilson quite the team.

Not sure I would call it recruitment. I would call it job interviews. No sense in signing the kids to contracts if you know ahead of time they aren't going to work out. It's part of the culling process, in my honest opinion.

You're right of course and I'm unclear on how UDFA's are signed but the fact that it happens so quickly after the draft has finished suggests that there are agreements reached in principle pre-draft.

I did read somewhere that as emphasis moves towards the FO and coaches in the evaluation process, scouts become much more involved in recruiting (and culling) UDFA's.

Well with the new TC roster size of 90 players and the Pats only having 5 draft picks so far and 55 guys signed to the Roster before FA then that leaves 30 guys for UDFA's.

Minus any FA's they sign so your looking at probably 25 at a minimum.

The Pats signed 15 Veteran free agents last year. Just keep that in mind..

Pro-Day Workouts: Week of March 11th
- As reported earlier, defensive tackle William Campbell measured 6045/311lbs, timed 4.98s-to-5.08s in the forty and completed 35 reps on the bench. The New York Jets and New England Patriots have workouts planned for Campbell, whom I felt should have been invited to the combine.

We should pay attention to Dante pro day visits. So...

Patriots OL coach at the Valdosta State Pro Day. Likely keeping an eye on OG Edmund Kugbila and OT Ryan Schraeder. Both are intriguing.

Schrader is interesting at 6-7, 310 lbs and has pretty good movement skills. Yet another RT prospect we're looking at.

I think a more accurate version is that no OL gets drafted early without the Scar seal of approval.

After all, they did everything possible to keep Scar's visit to Nate Solder under the radar (in fact, Solder was scheduled to visit Foxboro, but they cancelled the visit).

This is the full list to date that I've been able to cobble together. If anyone has any updates or corrections, please say so. For what it's worth, because it's not always clear on twitter, I've made no distinction between types of Private Workouts:
