Wes Welker signs with Denver Broncos

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

Look at BB's stats when he was coach of the Browns. And anyone thinking we will sign Jennings or Cruz, dream on. These cheap azzes would never pay for a real #1 receiver. So Denver has Thomas, Decker, and WW? Who do we have again? Deion Branch? Edelman?
Ridiculous.

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

Well apparently it is going to happen.

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

Ian Rapoport ?@RapSheet
RT @AlbertBreer: According to two sources, the Broncos are deep in talks with free-agent WR Wes Welker. 1 source said they're "optimistic"

... And the Broncos' ability to close with John Elway at the helm has been well-documented. See: Manning, Peyton.

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

I'm really bummed out about this. I think Wes has always been the good little foot soldier and never squawked about getting a new contract while playing under his current contract. Pats tagged him last year....then wouldn't negotiate til late this year. Just never seemed like they showed the guy ANY respect at all. Which is going to make ALL future Pats players who are coming to within 1 year of the expiration of their current contracts....act out like Randy Moss and Ty "gotta feed the kids" Law and speak out in the media and create a circus. While I do think the Welk situation is a bit tough because he is getting older and has the previous ACL injury hanging over him....I WISH They had at least started negotiating with him and SHOWN him more respect for EVERYTHING that he had done here the past many years. At least TRY TO get something done EARLY on.....don't disrespect your best players and then throw the lowball at them like they are a piece of sh#t........ I expect him to be gone now....but will always remember #83.....one of the all time greats to ever put on a Patriots uniform.....Best of luck Wes!

You are absolutely right! Let's ditch this franchise and become Broncos fans! Lets GO!

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

I'm already in meltdown mode. Our O was pathetic last year when we tried the Edelman slot experiment in game 1. This offense runs through Welker. We haven't won a superbowl in 10 years. Fans are overconfident when we beat up on pathetic AFCE competition. We get our teeth kicked in by good defenses and mediocre quarterbacks every year. I, for one, am tired of it. I'm calling out BB's and Krafts ridiculous egos. They think they're smarter than everyone else. They're not. And lets face it, our SB winning teams were built by Parcells, not BB. This guys ego is friggin gigantic. Congratulations on squandering the best years of TB's HOF career with this horseshyte.:bricks:

Really...Parcells built the championship teams? The one that Belichick inherited that was so financially mismanaged, yet talent-poor, that he signed something like 17 free agents that started in 2001? Thanks, Tuna. I'm confused...did Parcells, GM of the New York Jets, give him some inside info on signing Mike Vrabel, drafting Tom Brady, trading for Corey Dillon? Key players that BOBBY GRIER, notably not-Parcells, drafted were Willie McGinest, Tedy Bruschi, Ty Law.

Get down off the ledge and stop with the histrionics. Nobody knows Welker's value going forward better than Belichick. And if this is "squandering the best years of TB's HOF career (4 appearances in AFCC since the last SB victory), your standards are unreasonably high.

Greg Jennings is asking for 9 million. Would you rather have Greg Jennings for 9 or Wes Welker for 8.5? Would you rather have Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman for 8.5 combined, or Welker for 8.5?

Welker might go to Denver. By the time I hit "submit" it might already be done. Good for him. He'll probably do well there, but let's see the contract. If it's more than two years with significant money guaranteed, there's going to be some buyer's remorse on the back end. And that's fine. Denver is probably selling out to win a SB in the next two years with Manning, future cap hell be damned. We know that BB isn't going to start mortgaging the future for the present.

Now we'll see some off-season dominoes start to fall.

You mean the Game 1 where they put up 34 points on Tennessee?

We get our teeth kicked in by good defenses, so they're trying to change how they operate the offense (no Welker) and it's a bad thing?

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

Think of it this way: in 2010, the Patriots lost a receiver who was even more of a game-changing presence, and even more irreplaceable. They never did replace him, but they adapted, moved forward, and continued to have one of the best offenses in NFL history. Personally, I think that they can do it again. They'll need to make some moves in FA and the draft to shore up both the receiving corps and the OL, but provided that they do that, the Pats will have no shortage of weapons, and they'll have money to upgrade their defense.

The bottom line is that, since 2007, they've suffered 5 playoff defeats that were largely on the hands of the offense. I'm not going to blame Welker for that, but I will say that, if Welker leaves and the Patriots decide to shift their offensive philosophy to focus on the assets that they have--assuming that they collect more assets between now and September--that might not be the worst idea in the world.

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

Jennings would be an expensive downgrade.

Amendola would be a significant downgrade thats made of glass.

Only move that wouldnt be a downgrade would be Cruz, but it requires a 1st.

So, pretty much, plan B isnt that great.

lol Downgrade in what sense. Production? Most likely. Versatility? Howaboutno.jpeg. Jennings route tree is far better than Welkers. Catching radius and ball skills>>> Jennings. Long speed? Jennings Quickness and route running are Welkers forte. You can't throw a fade to welker, you can't throw a post corner to welker and you can't expect welker to make a catch through a defender. Jennings can do all those things. No I don't necessarily want him but what people are failing to realize is that Welker makes a living in one area of the field.

Against the elite defenses of the NFL: I'd rather have a combination of Cruz, Hernandez, Gronkowski, and another outside receiver (lets say Jennings) than Lloyd, Welker, Herandez and Gronk.

Ridiculous.

So when they paid Randy Moss in 2008, what were they paying for?

Seriously, I get that you're upset, but now you're just being ignorant. Chill out.

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

Addendum to previous statement-I meant game 2 vs. the Cards. Ya know the one when we tried and miserably failed with the Edelman experiment?

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

We'll have to see the numbers

Randy could have got more elsewhere in 2008, and we all know this. As usual the Pats got a "bargain".

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

Looks like it's a done deal. @mikesilver is saying Broncos are "nearly done." This ******* pill is going to be hard to swallow. Whatever the argument is over this guy, nobody can ever doubt his ******* dedication. He truly left it all on the field. One of the toughest football player I have ever watched.

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

Does anyone know why he fell out of favor with belichick? Was it the dropped pass in the super bowl?

you mean the one where Hernandez went down early and was supposedly a big part of the gameplan?

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

This really blows. Welker was one of my all time favorite Pats. I have the same sick feeling I had when we lost Curtis Martin to the Jets.

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

Was he or was he not a 'real #1 receiver'? The Patriots paid enough to keep him, and whether or not you feel like he could have got more elsewhere is irrelevant.

Here's a fun game: go look at all of the teams who have given WRs lavish contracts that paid them in the top 2-3 at their position, then report back on how many of those teams are even in playoff contention, let alone Super Bowl contention.

There's a reason why smart teams don't often pay WRs $12M+ per year. They certainly don't pay Wes Welker that amount.

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

I wish someone would explain this to me. How are the Broncos going to play Welker $10MM/yr and then next year year play Thomas more than $10MM and Decker a little less than $10MM. How can you have a successful salary structure when your 3 WRs and QB take up over $50MM of your cap space.

They'll be fine THIS year, but going forward, I don't see how they can manage those numbers.

I am pretty sure Thomas's cap hit in 2014 is only $4.8.

love what you just said. im sure welker is all but gone. if anything pats are pretending to be interested just to raise up the price of welker so that they screw the broncos over. I can only hope this is true. however if this is a small deal contract ill be pissed that pats were that greedy n cheap
