Worst officiated game I've seen in a while

well, Sapp said post game that that was clear PI and Mariucci said...yeah, but the WR was pushing off with his right arm so it';s a good non call"..they run the clip and you can see in HD the CB has two hands full of jersey directly impacting the WR in the EZ and the WR finally pushes him off with his arm to get free...Mariucci(and NFLN by association) will go with "good non call"...no...pass interference by any definition of the term...jeezus

The refs let them play for the most part. If you look at all the return plays, I'm sure you can spot at least one hold on every single one.

That 4th down play was never going to be called a PI unless it was so egregious.

And both teams were going at each other after every play in the first half. I don't see why the Niners should be rewarded extra first downs.

funny how you say this . . . i always look for consistency . . . and if you are going to let them play and let them play late in the game . . . then WTF did the refs call PI on the 3rd down play on the Ravfens previous possession which was also late in the 4th . . . that extended that drive and was basically a turnover, instead of the 49ers getting the ball on a punt the ravens got to keep the ball . . .

so those two key calls should of been ref the same, either let them play, and the ravens are punting, or call them both . . . its the lack of consistency that i don't like

It's all about the greenbacks. Goodell wanted this scenario so bad and he got it. He got the outcome he wanted too. No sport is safe from rigging and the NBA and NFL have proven that. Excitement and Drama generate big ratings and lots of money for the greedy NFL. We are watching the NFL morph into the WWE. More for entertainment than a true sport.

The last play was definitely a hold but with better play-calling the 49ers win anyway. I mean 3 straight passes with Kapernick and their running backs?

I don't think the game was badly officiated, they were letting both teams play. Culliver, the DB for the 49ers, was getting away with mugging receivers all game (until the end at least). I think both teams got fortunate with non calls.

The 49ers should blame themselves for terrible play calling / execution inside the red zone on their final drive. That fourth and goal throw by Kaepernick wasn't great. To me it looked like the Ravens pass rush influenced a hurried and off target throw. Kaepernick needed to change up his snap count, the Ravens were flying off the snap towards the end there. They knew when to jump.

49ers lost because they made too many bone-headed plays, and the Ravens made the clutch plays to keep drives going or to stop the 49ers from scoring TDs.

Stop your whining.

Spot on!
This level of officiating whine for a non Patriot team? You gotta be kidding me!
There was defensive holding and PI (or very close to it) happening a lot on both sides (among other penalties). This is the SB, they're not going to be calling that. Seriously, call PI/holding on two receivers fighting each other on one of the last and most critical plays of the SB/entire NFL season? Decide it on a flag? Oh yea, that's gonna happen and it would be such a great thing if it did .
A Raven player definitely shoved the a ref during the melee. That should have caused a USC flag -- but there was a bunch of USC's that happened during that event. The refs obviously went with the 'both teams guilty, off setting, move on with the game'. Yet I agree that one was flag worthy even for the SB. But that is not why the 9ers lost this game. The 9ers had the ball at the 7 yard line with 4 plays to put it in the endzone on the most critical series of the entire 2012 NFL season....and gained 2 yards (odd play calling there too, IMHO). That is why they lost. CK played less than effective in the first half of the game. That is why they lost. The Raven defense played very well in the first half (that same red zone D that killed us) and played well when they had to in the second half. That is why the 9ers lost. The 9er defense couldn't stop the Ravens with any regularity. That is why they lost. The 9ers made mistakes that stopped drives. That is why they lost. Big games on this stage are often won when one QB steps up and plays his best. Flacco did that and that is why the 9ers lost.
Stop the whining!

Off topic, Patriots don't look quite as bad now. After the AFCCG it was dismaying that the Ravens had given the ball to Flacco and said "win the AFCCG"....and he did. But he really showed something this post season. Cool as a block of ice. Denver, Patriots, 9ers...3 tough teams to beat and he performed!.... especially when the critical moments came up. Interestingly enough, out of those 3, arguably, his least potent showing was against the Patriots. Unfortunately our O had the poorest showing of those 3. ''''The best friggin offense in the league couldn't score a single point in the second half of the AFCCG...not one single point!''''. There is some worthy whining for ya!

For me the hold on the intentional safety was the worst thing. My reason for saying that is because the holding started on the snap and allowed the ravens to run 8 seconds off the clock but had a flag been thrown it would have meant nothing at all as it would have resulted in a safety but the time would not be put back on the clock. A system that meant there was no reason not to cheat in that situation.

My question is, is the rule book different for playoff games? And why is everyone comfortable with that? A foul is a foul isn't it? Or is it only a foul if the referee feels like it that day?

I get that the game is called differently in the playoffs. I get that there was indeed some consistency.

But I can't help but feeling robbed. I watched an entire SB and an entire season and then I see an Atlanta receiver get mugged on, effectively, a game ending play and then a SF receiver get held on, effectively, a game ending play.

When a receiver does not have a legitimate shot at the ball because a defender is holding him, how can you not make a call?

The head to head contact should have been called on the earlier play.

Ed Reed was offside on the two point conversion.

And Bogar was chosen for reasons not relating to his competence, apparently.

I feel a little empty having watched that game. Imagine how Niners fans feel.

A couple of things:

1) The same official that got shoved by williams was also on the goaline staring right at the hold on 4th down with no call....You don't throw a flag on williams or on a critical hold in the game....hmmmm I think your pockets are a little heavier....

2) Some of you talk about the no call on the holding on the kick off return being fine....How many holding calls on KO or Punt returns were called in the playoffs by non Pats teams???? The pats got shafted all post season by holding calls on punt returns and KO returns but nobody else does it or gets called for it???? Total crap...

Yup. Reminded me of Pro Basketball.

The 49ers ran three terrible plays when they had a chance to take the lead, thats what cost them the game. On 2nd and goal from the 5 Kaepernick rolled out and had nothing but instead of taking the easy 3-4 yards he could have ran for to set up 3rd and goal from the 1 or 2 he throws a bad pass. Then he doesnt get the snap off and they have to burn a timeout. then 2 more terrible play calls. That's why they lost, in the end they had the opportunities and they choked.

There was an article written last week that didn't get nearly enough play. About how NFL VP Ray Anderson has taken control over on the refereeing front over the last few years and how Jerome Bogger was hand picked to ref this game by wiping out all the dings on his in season record (and he had so many he wouldn't have gotten a playoff game) on appeal so as to make him the highest rated ref on the season. The other refs are sick over it.

Still, had Harbaugh and his OC not lost their minds in the last 2 minutes they'd have won that game. Out thinking themselves. Just run the damn ball in 4 down territory with 2 minutes to go.

especially without ngata in the game

No hold on the second half opening return.

Worst call of the night. Should have erased 7 points for the Ravens. I actually said to myself during the game it was nice to see the refs let them play, but it certainly seems the ravens benefited more from the non calls

Jacoby Jones 109 yard Kick return for a touchdown Super Bowl 2013 Baltimore Ravens - YouTube

at about 4 seconds. Cant see the full number of the 9er player, it had a nine in it. But Jones runs right past him and he was being mugged by 2 ravens players.

Re: Worst.Superbowl.Ever...

I don't get what you're implying?????

This thread isn't about why they lost. That is a subject for another thread. This is about how poorly a superbowl was officiated. Stop your whining!

Re: Worst.Superbowl.Ever...

So, you're saying that you were suckered in to the end of it? Congrats.

This sucked ass.
Dislike both teams and coaches. That said, it was a great game to watch, in my opinion.

seems this board is split 50/50 down the middle...one half is in the "let them play,no problems with the ref calls, great game" and the other half is , well, flabbergasted at the officiating.

Just to be 100% clear here...the Ravens were flagged TWICE...one a 15 yard unsportmanslike penalty that SHOULD have been an immediate ejection...the other a five yard RTK penalty that was about as clear a 15 yard RTK penalty as you can get...he RAN INTO THE KICKER AND KNOCKED HIM DOWN...what are we doing here, reinventing what happened to fit our particular tastes?

In a game where the Baltimore head coach immediately admitted was filled with mistakes by HIS team all game...that same team had ZERO defensive penalties called on it all game...PERFECTION...yet this doesn't seem the least bit odd to half this board.

The Torrey Smith "breakup" of a sure INT in the first half was as blatant an offensive PI as I've seen the past decade...no call...seems everyone is forgetting THAT one. I guess the refs were "just letting them play" like they did with the DB's all game.

Look, I agree the game sure was entertaining...as far as what I expect a reasonably fair and balanced contest to be between two NFL teams for the big prize, that game was as far from that as black is to white. The Ravens had ZERO defensive penalties in this game. THAT is ludicrous.

I think I've just accepted at this point that they call it differently in the playoffs. It's not just the NFL, the NHL and I imagine the NBA does it too, it sucks but it is what it is. The Tyree play pretty much sealed it for me, there's no way in hell all of the 4 blatant holds were missed, the refs are human and just don't want to be the guy that makes a call late that swings a game, they'd rather not make the call. San Francisco still wins that game with better play calling at the end.

Are you serious about the Crabtree call? Crabtree ran towards him to set up the corner route and as he was making a break to the corner, he got molested, not held, but MOLESTED with no call....These are "supposed" to be the best of the best officials with the head linesman looking right at it and doesn't throw the flag.....There is no way this game wasn't fixed....I am an official and I definitely would of thrown that flag albeit even if the pats were playing, it was blatant in the Super Bowl, IT HAS TO BE THROWN....

Here's the thing. It's 4th down. You're not going to get the ball back to be able to do anything. Crabtree right there should have accosted the ref. It's the Super Bowl. It's the end. It's 4th down. Really, there is nothing to lose. Why Crabtree didn't sell it by becoming infuriated... It's hard to believe. He should have. He let the ref off the hook. He should have sold it more. The fact he didn't let the ref off the hook.
