Matt Light Who?

I love solder.

I love Solder, too. A tall long guy that can play with a good base.
It's a hard combination to beat.

But... He hasn't met JJ Watt yet!
Sorry but Watt is just a monster. I had very high hope for him during draft time, and he still blows me away.

It's funny how little Solder has been talked about as a draft choice. Here's the full 2011 draft:

Almost two seasons later, is there ANYONE you would rather have from pick 19 on in place of our franchise LT?

I think Solder was an out and out draft steal and a terrific pick. Looking back on that draft there would only be (IMO) 7 players i would have picked ahead or equal to Nate... and that's with the help of hindsight and each is a pretty damn good football player.

J. J. Watt
Von Miller†
Aldon Smith
A. J. Green†
Patrick Peterson†
Julio Jones
Tyron Smith

Agree in a sense but lets be realistic... Watt has been dominant this year even if Solder Shares the spoils with Watt in the next game it would be a pretty immense effort by him Watt is just a beast. Then He will get to line up against both Smiths at some point the week after... Should be a real test of his progress to date. He holds those 3 monsters in check and i think he will start to get some national recognition.

What side does Watt play most on?

I love solder.

Unfortunately, the Texans' side. :D

Crack me up so hard!

Watt plays all over the place; a decent amount of the time is over the RT, but not anywhere greatly pronounced.

Left side more for sure; anywhere from just outside tackle in.

He lined up the least over Center (or shading).

We leave the C alone often on passing downs.
On first and 10, it will be mostly with Shaun Cody, who just got off the injury bug. He's our true NT even though he's just a little tiny version of yours.
He's been injured and just got back, but he holds the point pretty well.

We have a very balanced team across the board with few superstars.
A good majority of the fans don't even truly realize that's where the success come from.

Personally, I think we've been having success lately due to the team mentality.

Even a guy like Antonio Smith who's been to the SB is having a good time.
Guys are hungry and they're working hard, but they still have fun together.

They are all very committed to the task.

We haven't won anything yet.
We still have miles to go.

They're working to make the most of this chance; that's how I see it.

It's going to be a good fight, all I can tell you guys.

Von Miller. Aldon Smith. JJ Watt. Julio Jones. Patrick Peterson. :p

Actually, 2011 draft was a pretty impressive one. Lee Smith and Markell Carter are MIA though. Also Malcolm Williams. IRas Dowling was a sketchy pick that high though.

Normally if takes a while for an O-lineman to get national recognition.
Solder isn't there yet. He still needs to continue to work hard and improve.
Nothing is a given to linemen; the exceptions are very few and far in between, right!?

But you can't get any of those guys at 17.

But what does that have to do with solder. I'm talking tin, dude.

FWIW, I'd probably take Solder over Smith.

I dunno that guy Ras I Dowling has been pretty special at 33.

The same braintrust that stole Solder at 17 drafted Dowling at 33. So there's a couple of possibilities to consider:

1. They know how to pick linemen but are incompetent at picking DBs.
2. They completely misjudged Dowling's injury history.
3. The draft is a crapshoot, and they hit once and missed once.
4. Just possibly Dowling is was a decent prospect, and the fact that he hasn't yet developed doesn't mean that he was a terrible pick. He could yet turn out to be a good player, and even if he doesn't, he wasn't a huge reach at 33. Not every pick pans out.

If the price to pay for getting a Solder at 17 is living with Dowling at 33, I'm willing to pay that price. And personally, I haven't given up on the kid.

Amazing! Go back and read some of the Preseason Gameday threads. Solder was getting slammed consistently and many labeled him as a "bust". Now he's getting praised as a potential Pro Bowler.

Hopefully the people who were all down on this kid just a few months ago will realize they'll never know anything close to what goes on inside a NFL organization. I doubt it though.

Anyway, glad to see he's been doing a great job this year. :rocker:

By and large, the people who were calling him a bust then probably aren't the same ones who are calling him a pro bowler now. He did have a rough preseason, and there are a lot of people who overreact to anything negative, so it doesn't surprise me at all that some people were calling him a bust.

Between the Solder and Jones picks, though, there is one takeaway that all Pats fans would do well to heed: whatever the 'experts' say, if the Pats pick a guy in the first round, then they don't consider him a project. Meriweather is the only first round pick of the Belichick era who didn't make a major contribution from day one. There are too many good players in any given draft to waste one of the top 32 picks on a guy who won't be able to contribute for a year. That's what later picks are for.

So next time the Pats pick someone in the first round, and Mel Kiper expounds on how he doesn't get it because there were far more pro-ready players available, just assume that he has no idea what he's talking about.

Solder gets to face up against JJ Watt and Alton Smith in back to back weeks, these two guys are both top 10 pass rushers, maybe even top 5

Good luck kid!!!

He's probably not going to go against Watt, he will see Smith though.

Looking back there are only four players I would have taken over Solder. Green, Smith, Miller and Watt.

The perfection of the Pats' high-round OL drafting is slightly marred by Adrian Klemm. But only slightly.
