With any discussion of the draft and Free Agency, we have to take in mind the roster positions that are actually open. I've stolen this list of signed players from one of Miguels pages and modified it to only the players I believe will absolutely be on the 2007 roster (barring injury, of course). If we can all agree on these names, then we can go forward with who we think the Pats should add....

QB – 2 Tom Brady, Matt Cassell
RB - 3 Corey Dillon, Kevin Faulk, Lawrence Maroney,
FB - 1 Garret Mills
C - 1 Dan Koppen
G - 3 Stephen Neal, Hochstein, Logan Mankins
OT - 5 Matt Light, Nick Kaczur, O'Callaghan,
WR - 3 Reche Caldwell, Chad Jackson, J. Gaffney,
TE - 2 Ben Watson, Dave Thomas,
DE - 3 Richard Seymour, Ty Warren, Jarvis Green
DT - 2 Vince Wilfork, Wright
LB - 5 Vrabel, Colvin, Bruschi, Woods, Alexander
CB - 1 Hobbs
S - 3 Sanders, Wilson, Harrison
P - 1 Miller (or his replacement)
K - 1 Gostkowski
LS - 1 Paxton (or his replacement)

Total= 37

Free Agents if re-signed:
CB-1 Asante Samuel (most likely Franchised)
TE-1 Daniel Graham

for a grand total of 39 roster spots, leaving the team needs to an additional 14 players.

additions? subtractions?

I think that we need to look at Bruschi as on the fence and possibly retired next season.

It is still early in the draft stage but I think that him retiring could be a reality.

Hopefully a decision from him will come soon after the Super Bowl.

I think that this will affect our off season moves if Bruschi decides to hang them up.

Do not see Assante coming back, 7.79 Million is out of our salary structure, the only way they would do this is to then trade him. Color him gone, unless he wants a friendly contract.

Le Kevin Smith, one of our few defense players taken last draft was on the 53 all last year. Its possible BB could start week 1 with just those 6 guys, if we have somebody on the PS. (Assuming Hill gets cut.)

Hopefully, Seau and TBC get re-signed, so starting out of the gate, week 1, the starters are the same. That would mean we could use 2 LB prospects, one for inside and one for outside.

If we don't re-sign Graham, BB will probably draft a TE. Since the hybrid pass-catchers are always in demand, a run-blocker could be had in the lower rounds.

An unpopular opinion on the boards, but one that BB might do is to simply extend E. Wilson to a two-three year contract. Why stay with the status quo??????? Because Wilson's contract wouldn't be enormous -- his FA status is pretty low. Plus, after two injury plagued seasons, odds are he will be healthier. Sure its a gamble, but with the CBA limiting rounds 2-7 to only 4 year contracts -- a slight adjustment must be made by the BB/SP to stay ahead of the curve shall we say. Low risk-high reward re-signings like Wilson might be the key. That being said, I still think safety will still be addressed by BB -- but in the lower rounds.

OT -- It all depends on Wesley Britt. Right now our swing man LT is now playing RT (Kaczur). O'Callagan is a run-grater who replaced Brandon Gorin. If BB wants to improve the position Wesley Britt holds, thats a possiblity.

WR -- We don't necessarily need a WR -- what we need is a PR!!!! If Troy Brown retires, who returns the punts??? Faulk is getting kind of old for that, and right now it would be a competition between Chad Jackson and maybe Willie Andrews. FA might be the best place to address that.

CB -- CB is a huge issue. Hopefully we re-sign Asante Samuel. But even if so, we still need a nickel, dime, and 5th CB.

In general, standing still or returning the same starters is regressing. The roster needs improvements, specifically at LB (add corner if Samuel leaves). I think Seau gave us all he had, I don't think the idea of these starting ILBs next year:
- a 33 ILB whose play is slipping (Bruschi)
- a 39 year old coming off a major injury, who hasn't played a full season in 4 years (Seau)

It was at best a 50/50 gamble that these players would stay healthy last year. This year it might even be 60/40 or 70/30. For 2007 the ILB position requires an upgrade (London-Fletcher, A. Thomas, Napolean Harris, etc.).
