We all know the 10 players or so who will be gone and all the underclassman coming out. There should be 2/3 players that can MAKE A IMPACT for us next year. Who do you hope BB grabs in the 1st?

I am hoping for LB and either SS/CB but am betting we take a
TE and either a DB or DL project we turn into a LB.
My wish wish is Willis at LB.

This will change for us all many times, especially with FA yet to come.

Right now I'm starting to want David Harris with our #2 pick. At #24 I probably like one of the CB if we lose Samuel without getting an adequate replacement. At #28 I think I like Michael Griffin unless we think Merriweather's character is OK.

Best case for me right now :

Re-sign Samuel and Graham (I know, wishful thinking)
#24 - Jarvis Moss, DE switch to OLB
#28 - Michael Griffin
Round 2 - David Harris

Guaranteed to change though.

I'd like to see

#24 Griffin from safety Texas
#28 Posluzsny from (ILB) PSU or Spencer (OLB) from Purdue
#2 Harris From (ILB) Michigan

Early Value Board (for players within reach of the Pats)

I am crossing off anyone with a hint of character issues from my board. This draft is so crucial I believe it in our best interests to play it safe. For that reason Jarvis Moss and Merriwether are not on my board, despite the fact under the right conditions and leadership they could be all-pro talent. Not worth the risk. Also, Quenton Moses is very shaky here because of his senioritis.

OLB
rd 1: Anthony Spencer
rd 2: Dan Bazuin
rd 3: (a) Jay Moore (b) Quentin Moses

ILB
rd 1: none
rd 2: (a) Harris, (b) Willis (c) Siler
rd 3: (a) Tony Taylor, (b) HB Blades

RB
rd 1: none
rd 2: (a) Brian Leonard (b) Tony Hunt
rd 3: Lorenzo Booker

CB
rd 1: (a) Leon Hall, (b) Aaron Ross
rd 2: (a) Aj Davis, (b) Jonathan Wade
rd 3: (a) Josh Wilson, (b) Chris Houston

DE
rd 4: Kareem Brown

OT
rd 3: (LT) Joe Staley
rd 4: (RT) James Marten

S
rd 3: Michael Griffin: not crazy about his tackling skills.

WR
rd 3: Jason Hill
rd 4: Chris Davis. A Sinorice Moss slot receiver with special teams value.

So this would look good:
Rd 1 (a) Anthony Spencer (b) Aaron Ross
Rd 2. David Harris
Rd 3. Tony Hunt
Rd 4. (a) Kareem Brown (b) Chris Davis

My board goes like this (players I WANT the MOST first, obviously not including the players not in the Pats range):

1.) Spencer
2.) Posluszny
3.) Willis
4.) Griffin
5.) Harris
6.) Hunt
7.) Bazuin

My ideal draft looks like this:

1a. Spencer (if not available Puz, then Willis)
1b. Griffin (if not available, Ross)
2. Harris (if not available, Bazuin)
3. Hunt
4. Best WR

Wow, my ideas have changed a lot since i last posted in this thread....

You guys seem to know more than me. Why does a DE make a better LB than a LB would? Is it the size?

That Jarvis Moss from Florida 6-6 251 is sure Big!

The reason is because of BB's system he installed in NE. For example, Willie McGinest, Teddy Bruschi, Colvin, Mike Vrabel, and Tully-Banta-Cain all played DE in college.

BB once said that DE project to play OLB in our system. They must be "big" enough to set the edge of the DL against the run, but athletic enough to drop into coverage. Usually, but not always, OLB tend to project to play ILB.

For example, if we drafted Bobby Carpenter or A.J. Hawk last year they would probably play inside for us. DE in college like DeMarcus Ware or Shawn Merriman would play OLB for us.

In short, DE play OLB for us because they must be big. BUT, they must still be athletic enough to play coverage.

Thanks for the info on the LB question

So... what does BB look for in CB/SS and who fits this bill that we may take?
thanks again

so far ... BB has picked real small, fast, shifty CB in rounds 2-4. For example, Asante Samuel was in the 4th round, Hobbs was in the 3rd. Eugene Wilson was a CB converted safety who was drafted in the 2nd round.

James Sanders was drafted to play the SS position in the 3rd round I believe. So was Guss Scott. Dexter Reid was drafted in the 4th I believe.

History seems to tell us that BB will get his DBs in the lower rounds, but you never know with BB.

At least in regards to CBs, I think the two things that BB looks for are ball skills.

Look back at comments BB made after drafting guys like Eugene Wilson, and you see that is a priority.

Of course, as with any defensive player we know he values sound tackiling skills.

I'm not sure how much he values ball skills in his safeties, I think he puts less emphasis on that as opposed to being physical and tackling well. can anyone else add anything about BB's criteria for selecting sateties?

Here's my thoughts as of right now.

ILB
Number 1 on my wish list is Willis, but given the lack of depth at ILB in the draft, I think he'll be gone well before pick No. 24. I think he would make an instant impact for us on defense next year. I'm not sure what to make of Poslusny or Siler or any of the other ILB prospects.

OLB
I'm starting to become intrigued with DE Jarvis Moss. I'm thinking that if he projects well in a conversion to OLB, he might be an excellent value with the 24th or 28th pick.

S
Nelson and Landry will be off the board early. I hear mixed reviews on Griffin and I'm not sure if he would be worthy of a round 1 pick. Is Merriwether a Patriots type of player? Is he a difference maker worthy of a round 1 pick? I don't know.

WR
The reports from the senior bowl are that Bowe is the real deal. If he falls in our lap at the 24th pick, he just may be the BPA and we should take him.

I am really really high on Anthony Gonzalez. He was overshadowed by Tedd Gin at OU, but I think this guy would be a perfect fit for the Pats. He's got speed, hands, route running ability and top notch smarts. He'll be gone early in round 2. I say the pats take him with the 28th pick.

CB
Personally, I'm happy with Samuel and Hobbs. If the BPA in Round 1 or 2 is a CB, so be it. Because I don't know the answer, I ask your opinion, who in the draft (who would be available) would be an instant upgrade for us at CB assuming we retain Samuel and Hobbs?

OL
We're all set here as far as I'm concerned

DL
There will be no impact players available when we draft

I like DE Jarvis Moss as well. You are right; there are not many pure LB that will be around when we pick. Patrick Willis will be gone

Don't count Willis out yet

Last January people thought we could pick up Cameron Wimberley in the second round. By March people thought we could get him in the first round. By the middle of April, he was sure to be off the board by the time we picked.

There is going to be a lot of movement after the combine as each school's pro day is completed.

My point is that for every player that shoots up the draft board, one comes tumbling down.

If a guy like Lawrence Timmons shoots up the board, Willis could fall into our lap.

Who do you hope BB grabs in the 1st?
Stewart Bradley. The more I think about him, the more I'm sold on him. He may not be a popular pick, and a lot of people will say if he is selected, "who the heck is Stewart Bradley," but he's my darkhorse.

I'd like to see them take Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno St.

I like some of the LB's, Davis, and that kid from Penn St., although his knee scares me. A wide out would be nice, but after having drafted Jackson last year, I'd probably prefer they look to free agency. At any rate, they need LB's, DB's, and some help at WR. What does that mean? It means they'll draft a lineman, TE, and Kicker with their 1st 3 picks.

Here's a mock from D &J mock that has Marcus McCauley going to the Jets

Pats 24 WR - Dwayne Bowe 6-2, 220 LSU WR5
Jets 25 CB - Marcus McCauley 6-1, 205 Fresno St CB3
Eagles 26 WR - *Sidney Rice 6-3, 200 South Carolina WR4
Saints 27 OLB-*Lawrence Timmons 6-3, 230 Florida State LB2
Pats 28 FS - Brandon Meriweather 6-0, 190

and one from draftconnection

24. New England Patriots - Reggie Nelson, S Florida
25. New York Jets - LaMarr Woodley, DE Michigan
26. Philadelphia Eagles - Lawrence Timmons, OLB Florida St.
27. New Orleans Saints - Marcus McCauley, CB Fresno State
28. New England Patriots - Sidney Rice, WR South Carolina

I'd take a corner because they are so much harder to find. We could certainly use a safety with Rodney aging, and Wilson regressing, but safety's to me are easier to replace in FA.

I think Willis will be gone when we pick so I would be happy to take these two

Brandon Siler LB Florida
Darrelle Revis CB Pittsburgh

Who do you hope BB grabs in the 1st?

Tough question. If I knew which players were projected for round one, I could easily pick the two I want for the Pats.

Round one of every draft (with no exceptions), has been influenced by the Combine and Pro Days. Measureables mean a lot to some teams...and as the workout warriors make their way into the first round, some quality football players slide out. Numbers are important -- if used correctly.

It's easier at this early stage to say, I'd like a playmaker for the secondary (Safety or CB). Also want an upgrade at OLB and ILB. Add another WR (not R1) as competition for our current corps.

In addition, I'd hope for both first-rounders to have starting potential (by year two). I'd expect both picks to fit the BB-type player mold:
  • Strong work ethic
  • Team players
  • Coachable
  • Smart
  • Football players
  • High character
All that said, and in fairness to the question, I'd like to see Reggie Nelson and Anthony Spencer wearing the Pats uni.
