They obviously think he's going to be their starter for a long time and has pro-bowl potential. It's really not a outlandish contract for a #1 CB. Like MLR said, the best are being paid well north of 10MM/yr.

Its an insane contract on its face. I understand the thought process from Tennessee looking at it as a 6 year deal but even then its a crazy deal. Hes not a good a player. Hes shown less than Ladarius Webb and that was a pretty nutty deal. This just makes no sense. While maybe the structure will come out as a total backloaded deal as it stands now every GM in the NFL must be cursing out the Titans because they just set a new market for below average players that have some potential. This deal should rank 15th in the league at the position. I cant see how anyone views him as the 15th best corner in the league. Its not as much of a head scratcher as everything the Panthers front office does, but its close.

I honestly have no clue how good he is, but i'd like to see your scouting report that makes it clear to all of us that they just paid a below average player $8.6MM/yr.

I won't hold my breath.

The Patriots NEVER sink a boatload of cash and sacrifice cap dollars into a corner to keep them...Ty Law,Asante Samuel to name two are players who thought they were worth more than the team did and I would be surprised to see McCourty ever rise to the level of Law or be given ridiculous money like Jason received.

To be fair, Asante is really the only CB that the Pats have had since Law who was debatably worth significant money. I wouldn't throw around "never" when you're operating on a sample size of 1-2 players.

He is a young player and last season was his first full season as a starter if i'm not mistaken. They obviously feel they have a good player that will only improve.

It will be interesting to see if it bites them in the ass.

I visited one titans forum and their fans seemed generally allright with it.

CB play has become so important in NFL .Which is the team that was in CAP jail and cut real talent?.

I see so many comments on this and would like to some info who was the big guy who was cut for Pay due to CAP not his declining Play.

Cap problems don't typically lead to cutting guys because of their pay. They lead to not resigning your own FAs or bringing in others to fill holes.
Look at the Jets. They are actually stuck KEEPING guys (Bart Scott for one) because their cap problems don't allow them to absorb the dead money. They have made poor cap choices. You can't find a guy they cut because of his salary, but that doesnt mean there hasn't been an impact. Look at the roster. They may have the weakest WR group in the NFL, and they couldn't do anything to help it in FA. They had no pass rush last year and the best they could do was sign a castoff Maybin at the minimum. They almost surely have the worst RT and the worst OL depth in the NFL, and couldn't do anything in FA to help it.
They had a severe S issue, and had to scrape the bottom with over the hill Bell and cant stay healthy Landry at bargain basement prices in order to patch it together. They have no RB to speak of and can't go get one.
They have little or no depth anywhere on the roster, other than 'promising late round draft picks or UDFAs'.
They are a mess, and a lot of it is cap related.

This does not bode well for our next contract talks with Devin. Let's say that Devin does regain his form and outplays Jason. Do you think Devin would possibly ever take less cash than his brother if he felt he was better than him?

And we never see a bunch of those kind of deals across the league... Including in your back yard... Just sayin'.

Price setter positions? The Jets have been there in the draft with Revis where teams more or less threw his deal out when negotiating the following seasons. Outside of that Id say probably Bart Scott. The Jets really havent been a team that goes out and sets a market for the unproven guy (i.e. Kyle Wilson goes out and stunningly becomes a good NFL player and they give him an $8 million dollar deal). Pennington would be the one guy but that was the prior regime. They are in the category of taking guys like Scott and Faneca who have a track record but are going to be headed downhill in their careers and overpaying them. I dont think teams get as bent out of shape about those contracts.
