Am interesting 2006 review of Chad Jackson

Would love to see this kid show something Sunday but so far this blurb is on the money.

It will come down to this: how much of the test he finishes within the allotted time. Brains, mental toughness, character and the real reason he is coming out early are all questions that I need answered before I am willing to put him into the 1st round. His pure talent says he belongs in the 1st, but these other questions have to be answered first.

link? i know his routes werent very good in college but coaching could help that..playbook is possibly the issue now but im hoping Caldwell/Troy and others help him out big..we need his talent

Where did this come from? Uncannily accurate, it would seems from what has happened this year, although I wonder how different things might have been if CJ had managed to participate in pre-season.

That was an archive piece from The Huddle Report (just renewed). One other thought on this subject, don't you think will all those other receivers from Florida that Jackson is going to have as much moral support and technical help that any player could possibly get? I mean if he has struggled for whatever reasons and can't work things out in this environment then he may never be able to put it together.

bosfan - it can't do any harm to have Caldwell and Gaffney as teamates. I'm still optimistic about next year with Chad.

Yeah I remember how many people were slamming the CJ pick solely based on the fact that he was a Florida receiver.

At least 2 of those Florida receivers are coming on pretty well for the Pats! Hopefully CJ will come around next year. I think he will see limited action until he gets a better grasp of the offense.

This didn't exactly help:

Jackson was hurt in June when the Patriots did a surprise 40-yard dash test where all the players were timed. Jackson told friends that he wasn't training for the 40 and didn't warm up properly before running and getting hurt. Jackson re-injured the hamstring during the first two days of training camp.

BB saw something in Jackson. Jackson is only 21 years old, a baby in football terms. I trust BB's judgment. Jackson will mature and become a standout player.

[Chad] Jackson was a guy that we were considering in the first round...

Q: Chad said that you gave him questions from the playbook and gave him a quiz and you were the only team to do that. How did he do on those types of tests with being able to pick things up?

BB: Good. I think he has a good background in the passing game and understands concepts...he did a really good job with it.

Q: Is it hard to project the type of player Chad Jackson would be coming out of Urban Meyer's offense?

BB: No, I think it's actually a lot easier to project them out of that offense

...They have a spread offense. They read coverages. They run routes based on coverages or the technique of the defender. They have multiple formations and blitz adjustments and all those kinds of things that are common in the National Football League. I think he has a good passing offense. I think kids that come out of that offense have a good understanding of passing concepts and some of them are the same concepts and are very similar to what we do and there are some differences....

Q: Is he as astute as Deion Branch was coming out of Louisville?

BB: I think Deion came in at a pretty high level. I think that would be pretty unusual to find anybody at that level. I would say that was exceptional.

BB has drafted 3 WRs in round two: Bethel didn't pan out, Branch had a fairly productive initial season, and according to BB, was considered an "unusual" and "exceptional" example for a rookie receiver. And now we have Jackson, missing valuable reps during TC and pre-season due to an injury...trying to grasp the offense while receiving limited reps during the season...followed by a new injury and more limited reps.

It's hopeful to believe a healthy Jackson with a full off-season to learn the offense -- will be productive. Based on BB's comments -- it's also very likely.
