Chung Compare To Griffin?

You seriously going to use high school as a barometer for injuries?

I'm seriously quoting a Bedard Piece that listed Dowling's injuries. Also, '08 and the combine aren't high school incidents for him.

Also, i didn't realize this was a ****-measuring contest.

I suggest to you that the first rules of holes applies to you here. You're the one who made a foolish, unresearched statement. I just pointed to an article countering it, and you got butthurt and made that stupid comment about the NFL disagreeing with my medical assessment (something which I hadn't given beyond saying Dowling had had plenty of injuries). You're the one trying to crack out the rulers here. I'm the one suggesting you stop.

Yeah you're definitely right...I got "butthurt" because you disagree with my opinion. Ras-I will be our starting right cornerback and hopefully have a good year while doing that.

It will be great if that happens.

Everybody STOP! ... no more posting to this thread for at least 10 minutes.

this Kumbayah moment (solitary instance of unity between Deus and Simple Jack) needs to be properly honored. :D

Yeah, stop with hijacking this thread too.

Andy Johnson pointing out exactly how many games Chung has played in, 38 of 48, plus playoffs, makes the Chung issue even more clouded. He's been on the field for much of the time then during a period when the defense stunk. One dude can't change everything, and we don't blame Wilfork much for how bad the D's been so how can we pick on Chung? So whether Chung deserves big $$ is not clear at all. How Wilson plays as a rookie will certainly factor into the Pats' decision, but a previous poster is right - the safety position is an area of weakness all across the league and mid-level dudes like Chung are probably worth more dough than I expect.

You never go full ******. And you ,sir, went there.

Chung has been oft-injured so far in his career and a lot of teams are going to be hesitant to sign him to a long term, big money deal IMO, so we have that in our back-pocket.

Seriously, Chung has played 3 years and started 1 plus a second that he played 8 games in.
I guess using team stats to judge his play is vogue, but its also naive.

He played 16 games in 2009
He played 14 games in 2010
He had 1 injury in 2011 that cost him 8 games.

I like Chung, but he ain't the answer for the pats.

I'd bet he moves on after this year

Btw, wilfork ? Not oft-injured...... Chung? Oft-injured

Chung is really good playing in the box against the run but in coverage he is still suspect at times. He still takes fundamentally bad angles in tackling from time to time as well. If he was willing to come back for $3M per or less, I would personally do it in a heart beat. Anything more than that and no thanks.

Wilfork really is amazing. It blows my mind.

Chung's not comparable to Griffin. Griffin has had a longer more productive career and was a 1st rund pick to boot. Let's just quit while we are ahead. Chung is still unproven. He would need a breakout season to even sniff the kin of money Griffin is getting. Worry about his contract when it comes up. But he's a starter level player for us. All I hope is that he stays healthy and puts up a solid season of performance for us.

Yes! A straight answer! I love it. I agree with the $3m mark and to sign him up now if he'll take that kind of cash. Though I remain torn between the idea Chung has been part of some hideous defenses, and that safety talent is hard to come by apparently.

VJCPatriot- Chung's contract is up after this season, part of my question was should the Pats make an early move on him. If you read the first post in the thread you'll see why Griffin is mentioned.

If the Pats offered Chung $3M a year, there's a better chance that he'd slam the door on negotiations out of disrespect than actually accept it. $3M is nothing in NFL veteran terms.

Just for an NFL-wide reference point, Meriweather got cut last September, and then he signed with the Bears for one year and $3.25M the next day. When he was a free agent this offseason, he got $6M/2yrs from the Redskins. Meriweather is a $3M a year safety. Chung is not. Either now or next offseason (assuming he plays in 12 games or so), my guess is that the floor on his yearly average would be $5M. That'd be the 13th highest per-year average for a safety in the NFL, which seems about right. Now I'm not saying he's the 13th best safety, but he's definitely in the top 20 assuming reasonable health, and the 20th best player at a position always gets more than the 20th most money.

Given how pass-oriented today's NFL is, I think that paying $7M per to a safety who's iffy in coverage would be a mistake. If Chung's going to get that kind of money, I hope that he gets it somewhere else.

... what?

How can everyone in the top 20 be making more than the average of the top 20?

Not everybody is. There are always a few top-20 players who are either on their rookie contracts or on another contract that they've outplayed. For example, Kam Chancellor is easily a top-20 safety, but he's under contract for under a million a year for two more seasons. Chung will absolutely make more than him (pending a Chancellor extension, of course), but is not a better player than him.

Unless we see a significant improvement this year, I see no reason to value Chung at 5 million plus.

Yup and he started 22 of 48 games in 3 years, so using team stats for 3 years as the means of judging his ability is foolish.

Do you think that if we evaluated the team's performance in the games that he played, that there would be a major improvement? I see it, you see it, we all see it. So far, he's been average most of the time, with a few awesome moments. Is the market for that really 7 mill a year these days?
