Pats Running Backs

Woodhead and Vareen are the 3rd down type role that Faulk use to fill. Vareen could be special and provide the sort of explosiveness we haven't seen out of the backfield since BB has been here. Woodhead will benefit from fewer reps.

I am an unabashed Vereen homer and believe he will indeed be "special". His rookie year was sabotaged by the lack of a full offseason and injuries (his brief holdout didn't help). But I think he'll be MUCH more than a "3rd down" back. He and Ridley are different, but I see them as "co-equals" in a RBBC approach.

Kelemete was fascinating to me, as a former D-line player who was moved to LT, he'd completely raw as a Guard but has fantastic athleticism. He would have been magnificent raw material to be trained in Dante's Inferno. Once this guys gets some time to polish off the rough edges he's going to become more lethal than Martin Riggs.

Do you REALLY want to jump?

Very nice. :eat3:

OTG sold me on Senio Kelemete months ago, and I agree that Kelemete was one of the more fascinating mid-round prospects in the draft. It was incredibly frustrating to see him last so long on the board and still not have a chance at him. Other than Lavonte David, Kelemete is one of the guys I really regret the Pats not getting in the 2012 draft.

I agree in your perceiption of Vareen. The differentiation is the weight of the backs with Ridley, Addai and Bolden being 215lbs+ guys and Vareen Woodhead bieng ~200lbs

#24 ~ Dave DeCastro ~ Top 5 Talent. Hall of FAME Prospect.

#40 ~ Amini Silatolu ~ Top 20 Talent. 10X All Pro Potential.

#151 ~ Senio Kelemete ~ Top 20 Talent!! 10X All Pro Potential in the 5th!!!

#248 ~ Kelvin Beachum ~ Top 100 Talent ~ 10 Year Starter, Potential All Pro.

UFA ~ Dave Snow ~ Top 100 Talent ~ Potential All Pro who went UFA!!!

UFA ~ Wayne Tribue ~ Top 100 Talent ~ Potential All Pro who ALSO went UFA!!!

And that's just the Cream of the Crop, Brother Stone!!

There were a LEGION of sweet O Guard Opps, this year!!

You know, if Bill had squared away the edge defender position in past drafts (Cliff Avril, Connor Barwin, Jabaal Sheard, Sam Acho) he could've been in a position to use the trade-up to 21 on the BPA regardless of position: David DeCastro. He then still could've had his choice of Chandler Jones or Hightower at 25.

And thanks to those awful trades for OchoStinko & Fat Albert, and by not trading down from 48, we had no flexibility in the 4th, 5th & 6th rounds to acquire Kelemete (or Marvins Jones/McNutt, or Brandon Boykin/Josh Norman).

The situation at both Guard spots remains unstable. Without stability & strength there, our stable of RBs - no matter the regard in which we hold them - will not perform up to their collective capabilities. And then there's the matter of the up-the-middle pressure Brady will face, continuously...

I'll take Jones and Hightower in the first.

And by taking Jones & Hightower, and not any OLmen throughout, Bill is hopefully expressing his confidence that Vollmer can get healthy, Waters returns, Cannon can stay healthy for an entire football year, Gallery proves dependable & versatile, and that Solder, Thomas, McDonald & Kopa continue their improvement. All possible, no doubting it.

The Pats OL was the least of their problems IMHO. The RB position will be a fun position to watch this season and BB made a big effort to address the team's biggest weakness in FA and the draft.

Woodhead,Ridley,Vereen are locks.....let's see which,if any, of the FB's make the roster and if Addai and/or Bolden can break the roster. Plenty of versatility in the backfield and a WR corps that most teams would die for.

Vereen weighed 210 pounds at the combine...

The thing that excites me about him is that he looks pretty good in his college highlights split out wide and running outside routes. He looks almost like a receiver. If they cover him with a linebacker, I bet we'll see a lot of checks to those flag and fade routes Brady used to run with Kevin Faulk.

The one thing that was disappointing about last year's offense is that we didn't see a lot of catches by running backs. It seemed like Brady had easy yards available often, but just didn't like checking down to any of the backs for whatever reason. He did it with Woodhead more the year before, but not so much last year.

Brady's never had a lead back who caught the ball very well. It would be interesting to see what they could do with that kind of player.

Fascinating cat.

Hasn't played MidFielder for 2 years, now, but I'd love to see'm switch back.

Absolutely RAVING Report about him at NFL DraftScout:

"Called the "heart and soul" of the Arizona defensive unit, opposing offensive coordinators feared the dominant and versatile defender.

Whether lining up at outside linebacker in a 4-3 alignment or playing inside in a 5-2 formation, few teams could contain Larsen with just one blocker.

The two-time team captain made a triumphant return to the gridiron in 2005 after missing the previous two seasons while on a church mission. During his freshman year at Arizona in 2002, the new coaching staff considered his return as an added recruiting bonus. Opposing ballcarriers considered his return a nightmare for fullbacks trying to block him and halfbacks trying to elude him on end-around runs."

And there's much more:

NFL Draft Scout----Powered By: The Sports Xchange

"Has a well-proportioned frame with developing upper-body muscles and good thickness in his thighs and calves, with room to add at least another 10 pounds of bulk without losing quickness...High-motor type who plays with good intensity and aggression...Very alert and active to key and diagnose plays, showing the awareness, vision and instincts to call defensive assignments...

Demonstrated much better ability and strength taking on blocks as a senior than he did in the past, as he refined his hand placement and improved his hand technique to prevent the blocker from gaining leverage...More quick than fast, but keeps his pad level down and shows the loose hips to redirect and chase down plays from the backside (see 2007 Southern California, Stanford and Washington games)...

Has the power to take on fullbacks and clog the interior rush lanes. Does a nice job of staying on his feet and making plays moving down the line...Has the hip swerve to redirect and close from the outside (looked a bit stiff in his hips earlier in his career, but has shown a quicker flow to the ball as a senior. See 2007 Brigham Young and Stanford games)...

Shows the lateral agility to flow with the play, staying low in his stance to extend his arms, wrap and secure the ballcarrier near the line of scrimmage...

Unquestioned team leader who will not hesitate to take underperforming teammates to task...

Shows no hesitation closing on the ball and is quick to track down ballcarriers, doing a nice job of redirecting the corner runners back inside...Has good tackling form, taking the ballcarrier's outside leg to impede the opponent's forward progress...

Rare to see him fooled by misdirection or eye the backfield too long when playing in the zone...

Uses his hands with force to jolt the blockers back and also in redirecting and jamming the tight ends at the line...Gets physical when taking on the tight ends, delivering strong hand placement to reroute his man away from the play, as he uses his strength effectively to easily jam the opponent...When he keeps his pads down, he shows the ability to slip through blocks...

Combative working through trash, using his hands well to defeat the blockers attacking his feet...Has greatly improved his body control as a senior, as he no longer overextends when attempting to make tackles...Shows aggression filling the rush lane, lowering his head and driving with his legs to engage the fullback...

Versatile athlete who can play the "Will" or "Mike" position...Reliable tackler who can break down and face up...Does not have the speed to play in the deep zone, but has the functional quickness to stay with slot receivers and tight ends in the short area...More of a downhill tackler, but is capable of making plays in front of him...Shows good anticipation skills and has developed good rip and swim moves to generate a quick outside blitz...

Very intelligent, both on the field and in the classroom...Generally in position to make plays and engages the bigger blockers well, playing at the proper pad level with good knee bend...On the blitz, he has a solid hand jolt to maintain separation knifing through traffic and the closing burst to disrupt the quarterback in the pocket."

Screw FullBack!! I want this kid to play MidFielder for us!! :rocker:

Screw FullBack!! I want this kid to play MidFielder for us!! :rocker:

To quote you to yourself: Why Not Both?!

BB loves dual-threat players. Troy Brown. Julian Edelman. Let the kid play on ST too (as I'm sure he will).

Who'll be the lead back with the most impact next year is anyones guess, the only back I can safely say won't give us more than anyone else is Woodhead, since he's mostly situational. Don't give up on Addai. After all, Bill did turn around Corey Dillon near the same point of his career, so it's possible. Ridley showed us the most potential last year of the back, just needs to hold on to the ball and be more consistent. As for Vereen, we could have the guy we saw in the KC game who was a very flashy and elusive runner. Then again, we could have a injury-prone, 2nd round bust who ends up a dud, we don't know yet. As for Bolden, don't shy away from him because he's undrafted. (i.e. Arian Foster) He probably won't give us much impact (if he even makes the roster) this year, but may have some potential, so it's worth keeping him at least on the P-Squad if you ask me.

In general, our RB's situation is anyone's guess right now.

Ridley and Vereen will surprise a lot of people.

Ridley and Vereen will surprise a lot of people.

I hope you mean that in a good way

I'm on the Ridley bandwagon plus Vereen has a full TC and is healthy. That should make a big difference. There should be alot more long runs than when BJGE was in the backfield, plus the screen or dumpoff pass to Vereen should prove exciting!

Ridley and Vereen will surprise a lot of people.

I hope so. I see their untested potential as one of the big upsides for the team this year.

Brandon Bolden, RB, Ole Miss 5’11? 222 lbs.

We are loaded at RB and need to flesh out the rookie/young players.

Agreed... Let 'em fight it out in camp.

Belichick brought in a lot of good players this year for depth and competition

... not great players... But lots of good players and he'll keep the beset of them.

It's a wise gambit but generally what Belichick often tries to do - builds quality depth players who know the roles they are meant to play and play them well.

I could honestly see Vereen taking the lead role over Ridley. He's got great speed and makes good cuts. He's also got pretty good hands.

I wonder how the idiots who had Vereen in their group of TC cuts will feel when they hear that he was taking most of the 1st team reps last week?

Out of all of the potential 'surprise' cuts, I never once viewed our 2nd round pick who was probably in the top 3 RB's coming out of Cal last year as one of them.

It seems that a lot of people do not understand the limitations of physical injuries, and how Belichick views them as simply part of the game. On top of that, Vereen was likely waaay behind in learning the playbook last year, with the labor and injury situations that occured in the beginning of the season.

I believe we'll see a return to screen passes in the JMcD offense, and that Vereen will be one of the pleasant surprises of the 2012 yr.
