Willie McGinest: Sign the contract Wes

Willie McGinest on NFL Network tonight had some tough words for Wes Welker. They reported that Wes today said he may not come to June minicamp and Willie went right at him. He said don't be a diva and that before he came to the New England system and Tom Brady he was a nobody. Willie noted that the Pats will be fine with the other receivers they picked up and that in New England you don't miss minicamp. He ended by saying that everyone in New England is expendable except for Belichick and Brady and for Wes to sign the contract they're offering.

I haven't seen this side of Willie on TV, he's usually pretty low key.

Re: Willie McGinest: Sign the contract Wes

I just saw that too. I agree. He needs to just sign his deal and get to work.

Re: Willie McGinest: Sign the contract Wes

what contract are they offering him? The franchise tag?

Re: Willie McGinest: Sign the contract Wes

Willie was an idiot, then.

Willie McGinest rips Wes Welker
By: John Morgan

Willie McGinest lets his feelings about the Wes Welker contract negotiations be known, saying that Welker should be in 'mandatory' OTAs and bringing up his NFL stats prior to becoming a New England Patriot...

seems like all these guys just randomly try to take a harsh stance on something once they hit the media circuit to get their name out there. WTF is he talking about? Welker is probably one of if not the least "diva" player on the team.

It's a business. Welker would be a moron to take less than he's worth and risk injury on a one-year contract. The Patriots couldn't care less about sentimentality when it comes to contracts so neither should Welker.

I wasn't aware that Willie had seen the tabled contract and inspected the finer details of said contract.

In fairness, although Willie has no information available to him to make such comments, he is entitled to the "Patriots show up and don't bltch about contracts and take what is offered" attitude, because he actually did that.
He's not right of course, but he earned the right to say it.

Someone should remind Willie that that "Diva" took 9 months from ACL/MCL reconstruction to reclaiming his starting position in the NFL.

Welker was unavailable for comment. He was too busy clowning around ESPN discussing his contract situation with the media and his relationship with Brady's wife.

Yes, he should be sitting in the lobby in Foxboro waiting for the secretary to come down and tell him they would like to start up negotiations again.

Or better yet he could just take his 9 million and start getting better with his teammates. But maybe he thinks he actually won the last two SBs and believes whatever he's doing is good enough.

And another troll hits the board...

I like Willie, it's cool when he sticks up for the Patriots but he is wrong here. Welker out performed his last contract! Last season Welker could have and probably should have done what so many players do going into their final year of their contract and held out for an extension. With the risk Welker takes at his position playing last season with no guarantee for the future was a team first attitude. If he got hurt last season his future was screwed.

Patriots need to step up and do the right thing, not only to Wes but for the team. Lock Wes up for 4 years, not the reported 3 that they offered. And don't say he is getting up in age because his career really started with the Patriots, Wes has 4 good years in him as long as he doesn't suffer a career ending injury. Make the deal Patriots and move on to the real things that need addressed.

I take it you sign contracts that you're unhappy with or believe to be unreasonable?

You didn't answer the question. Until I see a contract offer that outlines what the Patriots are offering, ripping Wes Welker is an unnecessary position. I'm neither in favor of the Patriots or Welker, but I sure as hell don't commit to something I don't believe to be reasonable, especially a contract.

The more pertinent point is that anyone applying a diva mentality to Wes Welker, given what he's done for this team over a 5 year period needs their head examined.

. its my understanding that the franchise tender is worth somewhere around 9 million for the year. like i said if wes feels its unfair he should do what he wants to do. i think he should sign it.
