Re: Pats and Matt Forte

As far as your salary cap concerns, no team that truly wanted a player has ever been limited by the cap. They make it work when they want it to work. Reference to a "salary cap" is a red herring by which management can justify to a fan base the refusal to issue signing bonuses.

Go back and re-read my post. It's not about whether or not a team can figure out a way to sign a player under the salary cap. I agree, a team can sign a player if they really want him.

The point - which you seem to have missed - is that if they do so then there will be very real consequences and ramifications. While those may or may not be in 2012, they definitely will crop up in 2013 and beyond, in terms of what players the Pats will (or won't) be able to extend, as well as what other free agents the Pats will (or won't) be able to sign in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

As far as a red herring goes, personally it is my opinion that the 'Brady is the best ever, the Pats are wasting his best years; therefore they should sign (fill in the blank) no matter the price' argument is just that.

Re: Pats and Matt Forte

Sad but true.

SB36 : 25 rushes for 133 yds. = Win
SB38 : 35 rushes for 127 yds. = Win
SB39 : 28 rushes for 112 yds. = Win

SB42 : 16 rushes for 45 yds. = Loss
SB46 : 19 rushes for 83 yds. = Loss

I think I see a trend developing.

You're killing me over here BB.

Its not as simple as rushing the ball more.

In those SB wins, the Pats had a fresh offensive scheme and a real good defense. Lately, some opposing defenses have caught up to the spread offense and know how to make Brady play poorly. And, you already know about the NE defense.

Since the Patriots went 5-2 in games where they rushed for 100 or fewer yards, went 3-1 in games where they rushed for 80 or fewer yards in a game, and went 1-1 in games with 60 yards or fewer in a game this past season, I assume that you realize that you're talking out of your ass here....?

Again, correlation and causation are not the same.

The weak teams they played in the regular season had nothing to do with the Superbowl.

A good defense will stop a one dimensional offense every time.

You expect me to read your nonsense twice?

So you haven't bothered watching the last couple of Super Bowls, then, since one dimensional teams won the Super Bowls prior to this last one.

just keep digging....

Re: Pats and Matt Forte

The time is almost there when we will see offers to RFA players. I think the stellers will NOT be in good shape if a teams offers Wallace a level $10M a year contact, or even a 3 year contract including an $8M 2012 salary and a $6M bonus. In any case, PITT would need to free up $10M in order to keep Wallace. And there may be teams willing to pay such amounts for Wallace. Or perhaps someone signs Wallace for a bit less.

I'd pay $10M for Wallace anyday. He was awesome in Braveheart.

I keep wondering why this thread is active when noting relevant about Forte coming here is currently going on...

This is the thread that refuses to die. :rocker:

Bump.

Can't let this epic thread die...

... it was like twelve threads down!

Can a mod please close this thread?

Have to agree. It's a new world. That being said, BB would invent more ways to exploit Forte than Chicago did with Mike Martz as even though it was Cutler oriented, Forte was the O. 2012 will be different for the Bears

Nice. What's the matter, is three sentences the limit to your attention span?

I'll simplify. Agree or disagree: when a team signs a player to a large contract it impacts their ability to sign and extend other players.

The following was posted in the Koppen thread. Didn't want to contribute to the off-topic hijacked pissing match there so I regrettably really am forced to address it here.

Ahhh...They signed Branch who runs about a limping 5.5 40 now. That should tell you that TB wants Faulk too. Wrong direction unless you are going balls walls in 2012 for one last SB run before the old folks home. In that case, lets get Forte and Jared Allen and call it a day. Ya get a new set of Draft choices every year...... so what the hell. BB is thinking 07. What did he get from that Draft? One Draft choice stuck that year?

Forte, no. Allen, yes. That's it.
And happy Friday Pats fans. :rocker:

Allen isn't happening. The Pats can't afford him.

I wonder what Ryan Grant has left, he seems like he could be had on the cheap right now. He had some good years behind a poor run blocking line, then lost time cuz of that injury. Maybe a year removed from that injury he'll get back to form?

Why are you forced? Why do it at all?

Re: Pats and Matt Forte

What about trading Welker for Forte? :bricks:

OH...OH....I got this one.

I know why they can't afford someone of his stature and resume!!!!!

LOL..

No one can ever say that you aren't extremely entertaining at times, DW.

In regards to Jared Allen, I would imagine that the Vikes would be trying like hell to hold onto him, unless someone really came along and knocked their socks off with an offer they couldn't refuse. We probably wouldn't be that team, it's just so much more cost efficient and less of a gamble to take someone in the draft.

In the salary cap era it's difficult to try and make a team filled with superstars, actually there's been more than one famous NEP quotes to come from this thought.

We've got Brady, Welker, Mankins, Wilfork, Mayo, etc all as guys who are getting PAID in every sense of the term. Even worse we've got guys like Chung, Spikes, McCourty, Gronkowski, Hernandez etc who are right around the corner too. Just attempting to keep most of our own will be a challenge, let alone give up multiple high draft picks (so precious in the rookie cap era now), and 15+ million a year.
