Is It Time For Edelman To Go?

We have Welker, Lloyd, Branch, Ochocinco, Edelman, Underwood, Slater, Stallworth and Davis. Expect at least one draft picks and a UDFA or two.

Branch, Ocho, Stallworth...none of these guys are locks in my eyes....and I see a draft pick making the roster. I don't think Edelman is a lock but they need to fins someone who can take punt return duties. Edelman is one of the better punt returners in the league.

Would love to see him on the team but as already mentioned, players like Edelman who shop around have a short shelf life. We know BB values versatility however so we will have to see.

Wish we had more like him. championship teams aren't built around having 5th and 6th receivers who never play and don't add anything else except being slightly less talented than the guys who play. they ear built around versatile players, sometimes ex QBs, who can bethrown in and adjust to situations and make heady plays.

He's also our all time punt return average leader by quite a bit. The longer he stays here, the more he can learn about O and D positions for guys with his skill and maybe save a ball game here or there. Pretty amazing he's picked up a position on offense and defense already after having been Justus a QB in college.

he's a BB type of guy he can play every where + i could even see a UDFA comeing in and beating out one of Gonzalez. Stallworth or Ocho

I agree with the fact that he'll make the team because he is versatile. He is a great special teams player which is a very underrated talent if you ask me.

I guarantee that if he gets cut he will be pounced on by another team. I'd rather see Underwood or C. Johnson cut.

I just don't get why so many people don't understand how valuable this guy is. He's a football player, and a damn good one.

Why is it ASSUMED that the Pats will draft a wide receiver? I don't see it as a position of need with who we already have coming into camp.

It was reported that he pulled off a good Tebow imitation during practice before the Denver game. With Tebow in the division, I would assume that would ramp up his value at least a little bit.

Edelman had 5 ST tackles last season (all solo), plus one in the playoffs. So he's definitely more than just a punt returner.

Hell no. Not only can he contribute in all 3 phases, he's super cheap. Prior to free agency, I'd have rather cut Welker and used that $9M somewhere else.

I hope he signs a long term deal on the cheap and retires a Patriot.

This, Edelman is the man and he's the kind of guy you have to have on your roster a true over achiever a guy who plays anywhere where coach asks him.
A great role model for younger guys finding their way, and a guy I'd want on my side.

Edleman is a jack of all trades, master of none. I think he's overrated on this board, but he is able to fill in on multiple positions in a pinch. He's the football version of duct tape. The one thing I think he does very well is tackle. He really seems to hit hard for a smaller guy. He'll probably be back.

And anyone who says we should let Welker go because we have Edleman needs to seek serious help for constant excessive alcohol consumption or a brain tumor. That's about as smart a move as replacing all your fuses with pennies or tin foil; It might work for a while, but sooner or later you're going to wish you never did.

I think Edelman could have a ton of success... elsewhere. The combination of guys we have in front of him, Welker in particular, have made it hard for him to find a role here. However, should they cut him? NO!

Like everyone else said, the reason is his versatility. An NFL roster is tiny and injury prone. If at the expense of a slight downgrade at one position, you can gain depth and insurance at several.

Plus, in the event Welker goes down, Edelman would probably be the best we have at mitigating the damage. We certainly wouldn't regret holding on to him then.

Is it time for Edelman to go? Have we finally addressed the areas where he was competitive? It seems that Belichick has gone out of his way to make sure that WR and CB have lots of competition. Lack of depth may be an issue at other roster positions, but it seems that we will not have lack of depth at WR or CB.

WIDE RECEIVER (5)
He is not close to being competitive as one of our 5 wide receivers. I suspect that our consensus is Welker, Lloyd, Branch, Stallworth/Gonzales and a draftee.

NICKEL BACK
We currently, we have 6 corners who are ahead of Edelman.
McCourty, Dowling, Arrington, Moore, Allen, Cole, draftee
I'd like to keep all 6, although I think it likely that a draftee will take one of the roster spots.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Our top 4 special teamers are Slater, White, Cole and Koutouvides. We may only keep three. As many have indicated, Edelman's punt return game isn't worth a roster spot. Someone else can likely do as well, or almost as well.

BOTTOM LINE
There are always injuries. The last five spots are always up for grabs. Perhaps Edelman can sneak in at the end. However, it seems unreasonable to predict that he will make the team.

Ah, NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edelman IS NOT going anywhere.......

IMO we will carry 6 WR, Lloyd and Welker are a given, IMO Slater and Edleman get 2 slots.

Even if someone else (say Gonzalez is better) as the #5 WR, who cares? When you run a 2TE base the #5 should only be playing of > 2 of the 4 ahead of him are injured. He has ST versatility that the other WR don't have as well as being to play D when we get hit with a rash of injuries in the defensive backfield as we usually happens.

Yeah, he received 3 "practice player of the week" awards, for weeks 1, 15, and 18. Those 3 games, of course, were against the Dolphins (always a Wildcat threat) and the Broncos twice. Now that Tebow is a Jet...

+ 1

Edelman is fine to keep around as long as he's not taking away an important roster spot from anyone, which I don't believe he is. He's below-average to average in just about every phase of the game, but he at least has experience in enough areas that he can fill in in a pinch, and that has value on a team like the Pats. Ideally, though, he never gets used for anything.

This has been addressed in this thread already but I feel the need to reiterate... How many positions did you just list and how many people did it take to knock him off the roster? Simply based on his versatility to fill in any of those spots I feel he should stay.

I agree that Edelman may make the team. He will be competing against depth players and developmental rookies for one the last 5 roster spots.
===================================
MG's CORE ROSTER

OFFENSE (21)
QB 2
RB 4
WR 4
OL 8
TE 3 (a 9th OL could function as the #3 TE as in 2011)

DEFENSE (21)
DL 7
OLB 4
ILB 3
CB 3
S 3
DB 1

SPECIALISTS (6)
K 1
P 1
LS 1
ST 3 (the ability to be position depth is a plus in choosing these special teamers,
but the reality is that we don't want see them get non-ST reps)

THE LAST FIVE (5)
Lots of considerations are made in choosing these last 5 spots. The roster spots are not locked into any positions. They could be used for additional depth on offense, defense or special teams. They could be used for a returner. They could be used for developmental players, especially rookies. They could be used for utility players like Edelman who can fill in lots of places.

Players 49 and 50 this year might be our 3rd QB and rookie wide receiver (our #5).
=====================================
THE BOTTOM LINE
48 players is plenty to play the game. 48 players actually provide a reasonable amount of depth. In practice, a couple of more spots might be decided before Game 1 (I suggest a 3rd QB and a rookie wide receiver for 2012). The last three spots then are used by Belichick as needed on a game by game basis.

Some would have Edelman as the #4 WR, the first WR off the bench.
