"They believe that he'll spend this offseason immersing himself in the playbook, familiarizing himself with the Patriots' offense," explained Schefter. "They're going to bring all these wide receivers in and let them compete in training camp and the best receivers will play." The Patriots are reportedly working with Ochocinco on a restructured contract.

Competition is good in Training Camp..

He'll stay through training camp, but he's going to have a very hard time making the final roster.

Given the contract/cap issues, it seems like the smart way to go. Johnson can always ask for his release if he thinks he can't handle the job.

There's absolutely no downside to having experienced players in camp to compete. None. Only the equipment managers have a problem from it.

I'm baffled by fans who "don't like signings". What's to lose? Who are we to judge if/how someone will rise to the challenge?

First game of next season will be his break out game.

Being optimistic,

Last season when we acquired Ocho, he didnt have much time to learn the system. This season, he will have OTA's and training camp! Competition is great and lets see who will be on the roster.

If they redo his deal, why not let him compete in training camp? Who know? He might actually get it with an offseason. His problem looked more with struggling to get on the same page on the offense than anything physical. If he does get it, he would be an excellent #3 WR. If not, no harm, no foul. Just cut him.

I thought he had already agreed to restructure about a month ago

Seems like a no brainer to me. But I'm sure this will be met with much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the "Ochostinko" crowd.

Between the TV show filming all spring and the actual wedding filming in July I doubt there will be much time for Ocho to be immersed in anything resembling a playbook. And I don't think it was a matter of his not understanding the playbook. It was his inability to execute complex scheme on the playing field in real time. That's a capacity issue, not an opportunity or intelligence or athleticism issue.

The only problem with retaining him on a restructured deal even through camp is the message it sends within the locker room where meritocracy has always been the bottom line (Bill's binky's are treated by a different standard, they get mulligans and red shirts) and the potential for injury once he resumes football activities which would put them on the hook for at least one more season whether he can contribute or not...

It would appear the coaching staff doesn't share your view.

He had by Bill's count I believe in excess of 111 practices... People act like he came in mid camp and was cut before week 1...

I heard that they've been using crayons and a coloring book to draw out the plays for him and it's apparently been helping.

That's why I think it's worth bringing him back and giving him a chance. With Lloyd as the main deep threat and Welker obviously in the slot, Chad is the perfect compliment to be the #3 WR as an intermediate threat. All three are route runners with good hands which Brady likes. And all three can do a little bit of everything.

Anyone who's childish enough to still be using "Ochostinko" is someone who's opinions on the matter can be completely disregarded anyway.

Wouldn't be the first or last time. Seems you have the same problem with them in other instances... In my case we seem to agree more than disagree, but in this instance as with Moss what remains to be seen is if we eventually come to the same conclusion.

Great post. There's a lot of narrow mindedness out there. You have to have 83 players on your roster up until week 3 of preseason...so why wouldn't you want the best players you can competing in camp? All it is right now is adding depth to a team that I think Belichick and Kraft feel very good about. There are gaps at Safety and on the DL which can be easily addressed int he draft and they could do with a young WR...but it's not like we have many gaping holes.

IMO I think we continue with the hybrid on defense too which means we haven't really got a lot to fill. Another DE and a Safety on D and we're all good.
