Brandon Lloyd meeting with 49ers: Patriots are gonna blow it

imo manningham is potentially a great signing for whoever gets him

I'm sticking with the opinion the New England Patriots defense needs major upgrades:

1st Round
3-4 LDE - Fletcher Cox
3-4 OLB - Whitney Mercilus/Nick Perry/Andre Branch

2nd Round
Safety - Harrison Smith/George Iloka/Markelle Martin
Wide Receiver

3rd Round
Center

4th Round
Best available defensive player - 3-4 DE, 3-4 OLB, Safety, Cornerback

Unrestricted Free Agency
Andre Carter
Cory Redding
Richard Marshall

If the Patriots use both their first round picks this year to actually draft players in those spots, I'll wear a Jets t-shirt for a day.

And yes, that's a HUGE sacrifice.

Everyone's pulling out the "no time to panic, yatatata"

WR #2 has been a huge patriot problem since the 2010. If Lloyd leaves for the 49ers, would anyone like to share options?

Manningham and Robinson will be gone soon, that leaves nobody except JAGS and rookies to compete for our WR#2.

No, they are not cheap. They spend wisely and refused to mortgage their future for today.

Generally it's a good plan. I'd like to see them go just a little outside of it every now and then but that's been an issue for years. Of course they've also been to the Superbowl five times in eleven years so who am I to judge?

Agree with that line of thought, but last time I checked TFB doesnot have many years left and that window is closing down fast. He needs weapons around him and what is wrong in mortgating just 1 or 2 years of the twilight years of brady and see what happens.

Just a thought but we all know BB will never ever do it .

Yup..I'd have loved to watch the Patriots blow the bank and over spend with all the other idiots yesterday.......

......not.

The likelihood now is we're going to have to pay ridiculous money just for Loyd. The Patriots aren't going to pick up a high profile WR in free agency because it's not going to be good business any more. You're going to have to tie up close to $20 million in two receivers if you include Welker if we wanna make a big signing in FA at the position now...and there's pretty much only Lloyd left.

Yesterday's events should worry you...if anything it's made Welker more adamant he deserves to get paid. IMO market value right now is much more than he;s actually worth. We'd have to pay him more than the tag is worth!!! He's likely going to target the $10 million plus range.

It becomes more and more likely that the Pats let Welker play a year with the tag.

Welker is good and all, but 10+ million worth IMO is way too much money. Heck, we could have gotten VJack for that kind of money or actively go after wallace. I know I know they are not proven pats type commodity, but just sayin... I will be really surprised if BB goes for that kind of money

I completely agree, unless you are going after the biggest fish (Mario Williams) there is no need to go after any of the guys that will sign early. All of these 2nd tier guys were grossly overpaid, and once the money started flowing I think it put Lloyd out of our price range (if we actually had any real interest in him at all). This will lead to some great bargains later on though with the huge number of free agents and other teams cap space quickly filling up. Hopefully we can wait out guys like Anderson and Connelly and bring them back relatively cheaply.

Unfortunately it looks like we may have missed the boat with Welker. Like you said, his demands will be sky high with guys like Meachem and Garcon getting good money. I think the Saint's got lucky extending Colsten just before the craziness went down, because if he had of waited 24 hours you would think he could have gotten at least $10mil more.

People are silly.......the pats have never charged out of the gate for free agency.

Lloyd is not a necessity as Brady threw for 5200 yards without him. They don't need a 1000 yard WR to man that spot, so they won't be spending that kind of money there.

The money going to receivers right now is nuts. At this rate Wallace won't sign for less than 11-12 a year. That seems like a ton for a receiver.

I think this means they really need to do a better job in the draft identifying guys and developing them, because it doesn't seem economically viable to fill this need through free agency. If they keep whiffing on WR's in the draft, this offense could have some real issues in 2-3 years.

It's not about getting the best guy, it's about getting the right guy.

Production in the passing game does not need improvement. A guy who can stretch the field would not have helped e pats in the SB. A mid cost guy with some speed will fill the bill quite nicely.

How come nobody is talking about bowe?

He got Franchised and I don't think anyone will pay that much money and give up the picks. He must be licking his lips cause that dude is gonna get paid in the future.

and we continue to let talent get away in FA. Okay Belichick you whifted on Adalius, big deal. Throw your hat back in the ring and get some play makers.

Do you really think the decision to sign AD 5 years ago has anything to do with any potential future free agent moves?

It's the 49'ers who are blowing it.
Randy Moss and Brandon Lloyd on the same team?? With Alex Smith at QB??
Ouch!!

Oh yeah........

Production in the passing game is fine now, but its looking less likely Welker will be here long term. Branch doesn't look to have much left and you can't count on Chad for anything. The TE's are great, but we do need guys on the outside as well, and it seems a need that we might be forced to fill via the draft.

The pats fixed their passing game problems in a week between 2006 and 2007. Outside of moss, the pats have not had a real #1 WR under the BB regime (I refuse to call welker a #1)

People can be replaced
