This guy is fast becoming my no 1 binky in the draft. He's got good tape, did very well at the Senior Bowl and now there's this impressive interview with Optimim Scouting. Some snippets:

There are obviously parts of his game that need to be worked on to become a prime-time NFL receiver. Marvin elaborated on that a bit.

I need to consistently get depth, especially when the DB is on the break point. Make sure I get by the still squatters and not get pushed off my route. Making sure I confuse them, and making them believe I’m running a different route than the one I’m actually running. Also, an important part of playing receiver is obviously blocking. I love it! I want to really master that part of the game. My specials teams coach always told me he wants guys that want to, not have to. I believe I’m one of those guys and I will make sure I can become an integral part of the running game by opening up lanes for my teammates. It’s going to take a lot of hard work, but I am definitely up for it. I truly enjoy contact and try to be as physical as possible. Just being a new age wide receiver.”

My belief is Jones will be a better pro than he was a college receiver, because his skills translate perfectly to the next level. His ability to beat the press coverage and tremendous leaping ability will give him huge opportunities, especially in man to man situations. The Golden Bear agrees.

”I haven’t even scratched the surface yet. There is so much more I still want to accomplish. I’m hungry. I was good in college, but nowhere near where I want to be.”

Much more in there, particularly him explaining how he sees the role as WR. He's a family man and comes out of Cal's pro-style offense (like Vereen last year).

Whilst pre-draft interviews tend to say all the right things, Jones comes out of this one well. When we do those predict the picks competitions, Marvin Jones will be the first name I put up. I don't think there's any WR in this draft, outside the top few, more suited to succeed at the NFL level and more suited to succeed as a Patriot.

We spoke with Marvin for about 40 minutes yesterday. Audio and a write up here...

Really good write up. Of note:

At Cal under Coach Tedford, Jones got the experience of playing under a pro style offense. He has experience running option routes, changing his route depending on what coverage he’s facing and he says he can run the whole route tree. That could be a tremendous help coming to a team like the Patriots, who themselves expect players to be able to read defenses and make changes mid-play.

Bingo!

Bingo!

I believe that not running the correct option routes killed former second round picks Johnson and Jackson's chances of contributing to the Patriots. To this day, I do not know why Price got the boot. He seemed to be running the correct routes in preseason.

If the Pats can not secure veteran WR help, then drafting this kid to do everything Branch did makes good sense. Probably helps if BB resigns Branch and lets this kid follow Branch around for a year.

Can't make the club from the tub.

From what I've seen and read, Jones looks like he'd do well here. I've been on the "get Reggie Wayne" train, but it might be worth bringing Branch back just to work with the new guy.
