The NFL SERIOUSLY needs to revamp "injury time outs"

In my opinion the fake injuries are not the most pressing issue at hand. What bothers me is the intentional 12 man on the field by the giants in order to run some time off the clock and only lose 5 yards on it. I thought it over and at first I believed a clock-run off would solve it, but no, that would not work, it would cause too many issues because for every foul there would have to be a clock run off and it would get messy. Basically what needs to happen is to make it a dead ball foul and that should clear up the issue so that the intentional time run off does not even occur.

Besides, I'm not sure what the NFL can realistically even do to spearhead the fake injury plague. I'm sure they will try to come up with something but how effective will it truly be?

There is nothing the NFL can do. There are tons of injuries in some games. If they rule that the injured player has to then sit out a drive, quarter or the whole game (as some here have suggested), it will needlessly penalize countless teams in the future who legitimately have injuries.

It's just tactical. It's a way for teams to counter a no huddle O.

Again, we're talking situations where the player can't even get off the field due to the injury. Even the most minor situations -- cramps, for ex? -- require some time to get rid of the cramp, hydrate, etc.

Is it perfect? No. Are there situations where a player could have a legit injury and have to sit out longer than he otherwise would have? Some, but I don't think many.

Seems to me it's a good balance, though.

I don't agree that it's acceptable as a "tactic" -- there's a reason teams have a certain number of timeouts.

OT: Dead ball foul -- if noticed in time -- could prevent the offense from a successful play, when the offense did nothing wrong. and if not noticed in time, you're left with the same situation.

Why would it be messy -- at least if restricted to the final 2 minutes of the halfs (or even just the final two minutes of the game)?

I like the idea of missing a drive as well. I don't see that it needlessly penalizes, seems like a precaution, in fact.

If they changed the rule like that, it would only be a matter of time before a QB got sacked & got the wind knocked out of him on a final drive of a losing game, and a team would be forced to try to complete a GW drive with the backup.

So what? How is that worse than a QB not being able to complete a game winning drive because the defense gets a bunch of BD timeouts for faking an injury?

If someone is apparently injured enough to give his teama time out then they should, by default, be too injured to jump back into that drive.

The issue then becomes - if a player has to sit out the drive due to an 'injury', rather than injuries and players flopping, you'll just have 'equipment malfunctions'. A shoe falls off, helmet strap comes off, etc. Those can stop play, too.

I am almost positive that the referees do not call a timeout in any of the circumstances that you just described.

Like I said, it isn't perfect.

In that situation, though, the team could call timeout.

Or, until we see this loophole being used unfairly by offenses (I don't think we have to date, have we?), it could only apply to defenses.
