Isn't the reason for the forward progress rule precisely because the rules don't want players to be held up by multiple defenders who can then knock the ball out?

Footballs are oddly shaped. There are very few players, if any, who can hold on the ball for more than a second or two while they are being held up and 300 pound lineman are ripping at it. If the runner is still capable of getting yards, he's fair game and the ball is too. If not, blow the whistle.

It's a judgment call, and like all judgment calls, you'll get some that are close and could go one way or the other. I think by and large the NFL has done a good job at eliminating judgment calls for refs where it's possible to do so -- intentional grounding, permitting force outs of receivers, etc. But this one seems to me to be necessary. You can't have a rule that says the runner is always fair game for fumbling until he's down.

I thought the Tuck Rule was a dead issue because the Jets benefitted from it this year.

The Jets befitted from the Tuck Rule during the 2001 regular season costing the Pats a win.

Pretty cut and dry that it was the right call, forward progress was stopped.

Now if only they called Eli for in the grasp 4 years ago.

And there's just no way that whistle came before the ball came out nor does that look like your typical forward progress call we are all so used to seeing. The whistle actually came a split second after, and at best, at the same time.

I've never seen forward progress get called that quickly though. You can just as easily argue he was tackling him, hit him and then immediately went for the ball, because Bradshaw was still falling to the ground. A tackle can force a fumble. You're supposed to allow that play to continue, no? Aren't you supposed to allow the player to fall down at least before you blow the play dead?

That's a GREAT defensive play. They were not trying to stand him up. He clearly got hit, then the defender went for the ball as he was being knocked back. If we glamour at amazing offensive plays, how do you not allow what is clearly to me a fantastic, NFL pro level example of perfect execution from a defender?

Maybe the referee didn't do it intentionally because of the fumble, but they were clearly trying to help the Giants out in terms of clock management.

Either way, that wasn't the only one. There were at least 3 bogus calls against the 49ers in that game which were game changers. Just huge calls. One of the worst officiated Championship playoff games I have seen. It was the same situation as the Steelers-Broncos lateral.

Patriots-Ravens-facemask, 0 mention during instant replay
49ers-Giants - reverse on the ball scraping the knee
49ers-Giants- whistle.

There were probably more in some of the other games I may have missed but those right there were just too much. If this happens in the Super Bowl, I'm going to puke and lose all respect for this league.

Coaches should start raising hell, especially those of lesser known teams. Harbaugh is doing the right thing and taking up for his team and players. If you stay quiet and say nothing, it will only get worse. It's not THEIR decision. It's the players and teams playing for us, the fans. Stay the hell out of our football games or go get a new job. Sometimes I wonder if they ever do background checks on these refs. It's not the first time in sports referees or player throw games.

It was the right call in my opinion.

Harbaugh is a serial jerk, going back to his trash-talking days at Michigan. My buddy is an Ohio State fan and he still talks about how much trash he used to talk as a player there.

Then he did it again in the NFL as a player. Talked unbelievable amounts of trash.

Now he's still being a petulant jerk as a head coach.

He's a good coach though. Did great work at Stanford with that program.

No it certainly did. My point is that call would have never been overturned before instant replay and shouldn't have been overturned.

Yes it touched the knee. Was it a fluke accident? Absolutely. The punt returner was attempting to avoid the ball the best he could.

If they allow the blatant face masking on the Patriots like that, why do they overturn something that ridiculous? At one point they blew up the image to the pixel to see it.


You can't be that inconsistent. In one football game you analyze something to the pixel, and then 2 hours before that, you run replays over and over and over of a clear facemask penalty that you could see from the top row of the stadium which should have been called on a scoring play.

It was ridiculous to see them try to blow up the play to see if his foot ran out of bounds, but not see that facemask.

It's just completely laughable to see the difference between the two extremes. On one play the Torrey Smith is trying to twist someone's neck off and we're worried about him stepping out of bounds, and in the 49ers game we're analyzing if the ball scraped the thread on his fabric.

I guess my point is if you're going to automatically enforce scoring plays to be reviewed, then you allow them to call penalties too. The entire play needs to be legit else the touchdown should not count.
