Holley was on today talking about Tikki and if he loves football etc.. Said that when the Pats were drafting in 03 they talked to Ian Scott and he told them he wanted to play 10 years then start a ministry, and the Pats felt that maybe football wasnt that important to him. then they interviewed Suggs and asked him how he envisions his career, and he said he wanted to be a hall of famer, and be a game changer like LT. Romeo said your only 20, what do you know about LT?". Suggs said "film, I watch plenty of film on him". Whne he left the room Romeo said he's only 20 and wants to be a hall of famer, and apparently BB replied "the kids that good, he might be right". Just thought it was interesting.

And how do we know how hard they tried ? They were at 14, Suggs went 10, it would have taken something like a #3 to make that jump. It was a lot cheaper to get Ty Warren at 13. The Patriots can't get everyone they like.

I wouldn't trade Ty Warren for Terrell Suggs. Pro bowl caliber Defensive Tackles who are team players and can 2-gap are priceless. Drafting Ty was a stroke of genius. He excelled at the senior bowl, but had an injury plagued junior and senior years. Brilliant, brilliant move.

Yes, I know that value was a major issue.

14 to 9 would have been a costly trade up. If they wanted him, the reason they didn't get him is that he was too expensive. I doubt the Ravens would have traded down as he was a great fit for them, thus the need for the trade up to 9. I also agree with PE that Warren was a more natural fit. You can really like a player but not want to pay a big price for him if he's not a perfect fit when another guy can be had cheaper and fit better even if he's not the pure player the other guy is.

It would have been nice to have Terrell Suggs but I'm happy with Ty Warren. He has been very solid player on and off the field. Not only is he really consistant but he STAYS on the field. One of the best run stuffers in the league-very underrated. Teams find it very hard to run to his side. Ty Warren was the right choice. Since were on the subject, In the '02 draft, the Pats had a choice to take Ed Reed and the Pats passed, taking Graham instead. So the question is, would you take Reed or Graham. Grahams run blocking is invaluable- best in the NFL. He is a O-lineman in a tight ends body. Hard choice, but since the Pats have so many damn tight ends and no playmakers on D, I'd have to take Reed.

Ty Warren was an excellent choice, not only an ironman, but probably should make the pro bowl this year. Nothing against Suggs, but Warren fits in nicely with this team and its defense.

If we had Suggs right now I dont think anyone would be crying for Warren, just like since we have Warren no one will be crying for Suggs. But remember our run d was awful that year and everyone and their mother knew the Pats were getting a DT in that draft. Also the Pats may have tried to trade with the Ravens, and the ravens may have said no. For instance 2 drafts ago they tried to trade up for Mark Clayton, but the ravens picked him up. And if you ask anyone if they would rather have graham or reed, not even a question you take reed everytime. But the one that hurts the most in hindsight is Bethel over Boldin. But when you get a Qb like Brady in the 6th round you cant complain.

Other reasons to believe Ty Warren was a better choice that Suggs:

1. DL is a premier position in the Patriot ethos, even more than a talented OLB.

2. Suggs isn't going to the HOF, nor is he a game changing type of player.

3. Ty Warren is developing into a game changing player on defense.

This isn't to disparage Suggs who is a very good player, and one I would love to have on this team, but, given 20-20 hind sight, I wouldn't trade Warren for Suggs straight up, if offered, right now.

I like Warren a lot, but Suggs has very important skill in rushing the passer. He can get after the QB like few in the NFL, so I think that gives him an edge over Warren.

Suggs would look real good as a replacement for McGinest.

As far as sacks go, keep in mind he is asked to do a lot more than rush the passer, he is outstanding vs. the run, disrupts plays in the backfield, even grabs the odd interception. You name it, he does it. If his career stays on track I think he's got a real shot at the HOF.

You quoted a post from 5 YEARS AGO. Ty Warren is out of the league (or on IR, can't recall) and hasn't done much the last couple of years. I'm pretty sure patfanken and anyone else now would've preferred Suggs given all that.
